Chiefs want to extend Alex Smith’s contract

Even though their season came to an earlier end than they hoped, the Chiefs can’t be disappointed with the way their season went.

So they want to keep one of the biggest reasons for their bounce-back in place.

According to Jason Cole of National Football Post, the Chiefs want to extend quarterback Alex Smith’s deal before he enters the final year of the contract they traded for.

At $7.5 million in base salary this year, he’s well-underpaid, considering the contracts recently signed by Jay Cutler and others.

Smith led the Chiefs from a 2-14 record and the first pick in the draft to 11-5 and a playoff berth.

His accurate and efficient passing was a large part of that, and though there are flaws to his game, he’s consistently won, and that’s hard to ignore.

He plays very smart football and it wasn’t because of him that the Chiefs lost.

    No brainer here.

Keep Alex, get some help at WR and in the secondary and the Chiefs will be a perennial playoff team.

I like Alex, but he’ll get grossly overpaid.

They could do worse. I thought he stepped up nicely in that disgraceful loss last weekend. He didn’t slide when he scrambled, and wasn’t afraid to throw downfield.
