Jim Tomsula begins to attract attention

Tomsula

Add another name to the list of players in the current game of coaching musical chairs.

PFT has confirmed that the Vikings want to interview 49ers defensive line coach Jim Tomsula. Per a league source, some of the other teams currently looking for a head coach are doing background work on the 46-year-old Tomsula, who has been in his current position for six years.

According to multiple reports, the Vikings have not yet formally requested permission to interview Tomsula. With the 49ers approaching a divisional-round playoff game, the Vikings may have to wait until the 49ers’ playoff run has ended.

Tomsula served as the 49ers interim head coach in 2010. His 28 years of coaching experience include a stint as head coach of the Rhein Fire in the defunct NFL Europe/Europa/Whateva.

While he’s a long shot to land a head-coaching job this time around, the Vikings’ interest could lead to more interest, at a minimum putting Tomsula in position to be considered as a defensive coordinator -- which he potentially could become in Minnesota if the Vikings hire 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman to be their head coach.
