Lovie Smith names 11 new assistants, including son

Lovie Smith AP

New Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith used his year off to plan for his return to coaching, and it’s obviously paying off.

After having already named coordinators Leslie Frazier and Jeff Tedford, the Buccaneers announced the hiring of 11 more assistants Thursday.

The previously reported names include: Marcus Arroyo (quarterbacks), Joe Cullen (defensive line), Hardy Nickerson (linebackers), Kevin O’Dea (special teams coordinator) and Tim Spencer (running backs).

The new names announced along with those five were: Andrew Hayes-Stoker (wide receivers), Dave Kennedy (head strength and conditioning coach), Larry Marmie (senior defensive assistant), Mikal Smith (safeties), Ben Steele (offensive quality control) and Matt Wiegand (assistant offensive line).

Mikal Smith happens to be Smith’s son, which wasn’t mentioned in the team’s release.

The younger Smith spent last year coaching nickelbacks in Dallas, and had three years as a quality control coach and defensive assistant on his dad’s staff.

Why not? Worked out so well for Mike and Kyle Shanahan

The people who hate nepotism are people who are just mad they don’t have a good relationship with their parents. Nothing wrong with it period. That’s coming from a fan of team who had a great duo in the Shanahans. They could and should have succeeded in DC but outside forces just wouldn’t let it happen right John Mara? Anyways, we have the best Gruden on Earth as HC and you have an ok HC in Smith TB. Don’t let the haters tell you nepotism this and nepotism that. It’s all good.

Smith did well with Chicago, so I think he will have success in Tampa. They will have their hands full though, against New Orleans and Carolina, but it will be interesting watching the development of Glennon and the rest of the team.

The other 10 assistants are more distant relatives.

Look forward to watching a successful Bucs team right the ship next year. I really like the smith hire and, from the perspective of a Vikings fan, feel Frazier has probably been handed a much better opportunity to succeed. He’s a class act, wish him nothing but success.

    .

Baby starts on daddy’s staff in Chicago. When daddy gets fired, baby goes to Monte Kiffin’s staff in Dallas. Then baby arrives in Tampa with all the glory of the Dallas secondary on his resume.

The NFL, where nepotism is expected.

If Lovie would’ve had even a small percent of a clue about offense, DaBears would have been a solid team.

I’m going to guess that he will have that covered this time. Should be a great hire TB.

Just a note: His in game management sucks. He once called two timeouts on the same play (and it wasn’t about a challange).

Lost in the shuffle is that the hired Joe Cullen, the defensive line coach that was arrested for going through a Wendy’s drive-thru butt-a$$ naked while with the Lions.
