Steve Smith downgrades himself, but still likely to play

Steve Smith AP

Panthers receiver Steve Smith still expects to play against the 49ers on Sunday. He’s just slightly less confident than he was yesterday.

Smith, who missed Carolina’s regular season finale with a knee injury, was able to practice today. But he said that after feeling “71 percent” yesterday, he put himself at “57 percent” today.

Still, as Steve Reed of the Associated Press notes, when Smith puts a percentage on the health of his knee, he seems to be doing it more to have fun with the media than to give an accurate update on his status. And the fact that Smith practiced makes it highly unlikely that he’ll sit out on Sunday, which is one of the biggest games of his career.

So Smith is still likely to play. Even if he may be playing on a knee that’s less than 100 percent.

Wasn’t “I Downgrade Myself” a hit by the Divinyls back in the 90s?

It doesnt matter is will have no outcome in this game. he cant even get over 70 yards in a game all year.

Steve Smith.. so many years watching him play well against the bucs. I hate the panthers, but will always respect a dude like Steve Smith.

He leads the league in emphatic first down celebrations!

Rubenxx7- He hasn’t had a huge game this season, but he consistantly gets around 60 yards and converts on critical third-down situations.

57%? Really? I wonder how he came up with that?

I was about 43% this morning. With the work day progressing, and the Turkey sandwich I just had for lunch I am now about 64%.

Smith you’re a Warrior. If you can play great and if not we need you on sidelines firing us up. We got you covered! Just be ready next week when we go to Seattle and kick the Seahags in the teeth. Ice up Hawks you’re done in two weeks!

I love that, 71%, 57%. Mocks the media in how they report on these injuries. And mocking the media is a-ok in my book.

  19. illinininer says: Jan 9, 2014 3:47 PM

I don’t care if his knee is at 5.7%, he’ll suit up. Gonna be a good game, can’t wait.

So where’s the report on the death threats to Flair?

  23. JSpicoli says: Jan 9, 2014 3:53 PM

If Steve Smith weighed 300 lbs, he’d be a lineman and he would be banned from the league for ripping limbs off people.

  25. savilo831 says: Jan 9, 2014 4:00 PM

This is clearly a strategy to try to catch the niners off gaurd. They need any advantage they could get. He’s close to full health. Mark my words.

Smith is a gamer. Of course he is playing. The staff would have to force that guy to sit out a playoff game.

hey Steve. Don’t get mad at anyone in practice at walk thru tomorrow. We cant have you injuring your shoulder trying to hit a teammate in the head with your helmet now.

but can’t hate on Steve Smith. Tough player that plays so much bigger than his height.

Hope he plays (but doesn’t light up the niners too much).
