NFC West rematch for the title: 49ers beat Panthers

Anquan Boldin AP

The Panthers clutched and grabbed and held on as long as they could. By the end of the day, they were exhausted because they were beaten at their own game, by a team better than they were.

The 49ers won a trench-war decision over the Panthers, 23-10 in the divisional round.

With the win, the 49ers advance to next week’s NFC Championship Game at Seattle. Those two split the regular season series.

The 49ers looked flat early on, as the Panthers chose to take a field goal on an early fourth-down near the goal line, building a 10-6 lead in the second quarter

But that was the high point of the day for the Panthers, who were worn down and personnel-thin in the secondary and on the offensive line.

Wide receiver Anquan Boldin began to expose the first weakness (eight catches for 136 yards and a touchdown), and the 49ers defense did the rest (finishing with five sacks).

A long touchdown drive to open the second half took the wind out of the Panthers sails, and their own deliberate offense wasn’t able to get chunks of yards in the second half.

Coupled with their defense coming unglued and committing stupid penalty after stupid penalty, the Panthers didn’t have much of a chance.

The Panthers exceeded every expectation in 2013, finishing 12-4 and winning the NFC South. But the deficiencies which they covered up for so long were exposed, and they have a clear blueprint to follow this offseason.

23-10…Carolina did not show up today, even after 2 weeks of preperation & being at home. Ric Flair had called it, they had no business playing today & I’m glad they are out. I think most people preferred a Seattle-San Francisco game next week anyways.

Don’t forget the 49ers are owned by the mafia… The NFL ousted Eddie DeBartolo (Michael Corleone), but they let Denise DeBartolo York (Connie Corleone) stay on with her son to run the team.

The good news for the 9ers? They beat Carolina (with the help of the refs). The bad news? Now they have to play the Seahawks in the Clink where they’ve been outscored 71-16 in the last two games. Go Hawks!

Can’t wait for the game next week in Seattle, going to be a good one. Still can’t quite comprehend the penalty on Skuta, Newton basically spinned right into him. They overprotect the QBs. Unless it was just a whistle happy ref who went on first instinct

  17. bucrightoff says: Jan 12, 2014 4:09 PM

Panthers offense is pathetic. In every one of their games against good teams they produced 20 points or less. That defense can’t do it all.

  18. gvrose8192 says: Jan 12, 2014 4:10 PM

Congratulations to the Panthers on a fine season. They’ll be back.

For now – it’s a grudge rubber match between the two best teams in the NFC.

Niners vs. Seahawks. And the Seahawks will need to play better than they did against the Saints or it’ll be the Niners moving on again.

Proud of the way this Niner team overcame adversity this year.

Real rivalries are made in the playoffs. Here’s to the first of many playoff matchups between these two great football teams.

    Go hawks!!!

What is the difference between you and Atlanta? Nothing. Both of you get home field advantage and lose. As a matter of fact, you lost by more points at home than the Saints lost by on the road at Seattle. Enjoy “making” the playoffs. That is the closet you will get to a Superbowl with your top rated QB in flopping for penalty calls.

  40. jeremy84848 says: Jan 12, 2014 4:15 PM

If the cap allows it, the Panthers need to pursue either Nicks or preferably Maclin in the offseason, then build the offensive line through the draft. Byron Bell had another atrocious day. It’s hard to imagine him making it as a bench player on most teams.

Kap has become the golden boy of the moment, but if Cam had the 49ers’ offensive personnel around him he’d be scary. Only so much you can do when you have one, 34-year old receiver capable of getting open and the right side of your O-line collapses on every play.

  41. ocd2828 says: Jan 12, 2014 4:15 PM

It’s ridiculous that Belichick is going to lose coach of the year to either Reid or Rivera. They were clearly the worst coaches in the postseason with Reid’s usual clock mismanagement and Rivera’s team making undisciplined and costly penalties. Meanwhile BB is preparing for another AFC title game after another dominating performance last night.

  42. goldrush36 says: Jan 12, 2014 4:15 PM

Let’s see if the Seahawks can, too

  49. Youknowimright says: Jan 12, 2014 4:21 PM

Cam newton is the biggest fraud in the league. He is unable to read a defense. His attitude for a qb is brutal. His body language was terrible today. ultimate me guy. He will never win anything in the nfl. You can get by in college with that because your talent level was better than everyone else but in the nfl the playing field levels out talent wise. Attitude and mental toughness mean everything.

  50. phelbin says: Jan 12, 2014 4:21 PM

If the Panthers played as good as they trash talked they’d be playing in Seattle next week. I’ve never seen a defense do so little and talk so much. I loved it when the 49er’s players just pointed to the scoreboard every time the Panthers got in their face! And someone please tell Cam Newton to stop wrapping a towel around his damn head – it looks as stupid as his Superman pose!

  58. richarddmeier says: Jan 12, 2014 4:30 PM

Did we ever expect anything else? This is how the NFC should be decided, with the two best teams in the NFC.

NFC West is NFC Best and the two best teams in the NFC will be beating the hell out of each other for the title. Football at its best.

Go Hawks. Should be fun though!

Dont know if better team won. Cant wait for next weekend

  62. number1hawkfan says: Jan 12, 2014 4:31 PM

We all get what we want. I’m sick of the Niners and their fans and I know they’re sick of us. One team and one fan base will have to shut up and one team and one fan base will have all the bragging rights. Until then, I’m not predicting anything or talking any trash. It will all be decided on the field next Sunday just how it should be. With all that being said Harbaugh’s a D bag. I couldn’t help it. LOL Can’t wait for Sunday so the truth is what it is.

  63. spyder9669 says: Jan 12, 2014 4:32 PM

A fan of none of these teams but I must admit this 49er crowd sure does alot of gum flapping for having lost a SB and constantly getting blown away by Seattle…and then still have the nerve to make fun of the Hawks? That’s pretty interesting. The game hasn’t been played yet guys. And up to this point all your team has proved is that it loses big games.

  64. deltaoracle says: Jan 12, 2014 4:33 PM

    Best possible outcome next week:
Sherman slams into Kaepernick on the sideline; the two crash into Harbaugh and all three are knocked out. And Carroll trips while running across the field and is also knocked unconscious.
After that I don’t care who wins.

  65. redandgoldhitman52 says: Jan 12, 2014 4:33 PM

  66. joe2jerry says: Jan 12, 2014 4:34 PM

People on here talk so much about the Hawks cheating on pass interference but what about the Forty-Whiners today with 12 men in the huddle (not called ), Harbaugh running on the field whenever he feels like it, Boldin head butting every Carolina player after catches and no calls from the officials.

The Whiners will get beat next weekend because they can’t handle the 12th man noise and thats ALL there is to it. The Hawks wanted this rematch right along, bet your last dollar on it !

  72. ialwayswantedtobeabanker says: Jan 12, 2014 4:38 PM

THAT is the call you can’t believe? The game was over then. They allowed the Niners to have 12 men in the huddle and did not call a penalty or allow the Panthers to change personnel when they protested. The Niners scored on that play. 2 bogus personal foul penalties that kept drives alive. Watch the Gore run in the 4th quarter-Keuchly is close-lined and tackled. The panthers lost 10 points and 120 yards of field position on bad calls. And you want to gripe about that call? It was a make up call to appear the officiating was balanced. The Panthers were hosed by part-time employees in a billion dollar business.

  75. mhs8031 says: Jan 12, 2014 4:40 PM

  77. xlj1m30lx says: Jan 12, 2014 4:41 PM

  78. number1hawkfan says: Jan 12, 2014 4:41 PM

Like I said before, the game on Sunday will tell the story one way or another. I just hope it’s a Seahawks victory because I won’t be able to watch the Super Bowl if the Niners are in it after beating my Hawks. I guess I’ll be golfing that day. It fitting this year’s NFC crown will come down to the two best teams. The Seahawks and 49ers are each other. They need each other. It’s the best rivalry since Baltimore Pittsburgh a few years back.

Handicapping the game is pretty easy as I see it. The 49ers are much better than when they beat the Seahawks Dec 8th at Candlestick. The question Seahawk fans have to honestly as themselves is obvious…Are you better than when you played the Niners Dec 8th?

  82. mypercyhurts2 says: Jan 12, 2014 4:44 PM

As a Rams’ fan living in the Northwest, the outcomes of this weekend of football is turning out to be really bad. Can’t stand either the 9ers or Seahawks, but I respect how good they are. The Patriots winning just adds to my crapfest weekend!

It is not that those three teams don’t deserve to be in their conferences championships, it is just old hatreds and bitter rivalries that drive my dislike of them. If the Broncos win, at least the Conference Championships will be interesting to watch.

…or….. maybe San Diego will be this year’s Ravens? Probably not, but there is always hope……

Wow, the dirty hits started on the first series, and unbelievably, the refs and announcers totally ignored it. The Panther defender grabbed the face mask with both hands, pulled the player down by the helmet, and did an alligator roll to boot. I couldn’t believe nobody seemed to notice.

  90. ninersducksfan says: Jan 12, 2014 4:50 PM

  92. smitty113 says: Jan 12, 2014 4:54 PM

Neither of these QBs today can read the field. They are both one read quarterbacks. SF in particular has a loaded roster with depth . Colin is asked to do so little. I can’t wait to see 3 real QBs play next week in Manning, Wilson and Brady.

The Niners would be unbeatable if they had a good QB. If not for that Niners D, the Niners would have been 4-12 instead of 12-4.

Kaepernick looks worse every week. His recievers make some great catches of poorly thrown balls though. Can’t wait until the Niners overpay Kaepernick by 15 million a year and have to let the talent move on to stay underthe cap.. He is almost as good as Trent Dilfer. Trent has a ring.

The Niners won’t beat the Seahawks. I don’t care for either team, but the Seahawks are obviously way above anyone else in the NFC. That said, the AFC will win the SB again.

The 49ers post-play antics are embarrassing. For crying out loud, these are grown men acting like puffed up teenagers. It’s all the things so many parents of athletes hate about football, wrapped up with a red and gold bow. The bigger the audience gets for this team, the worse it is for the sport.

The difference is the 49ers can point to multiple games where Kap was the actual deciding factor and best player on the field. RW is Alex Smith with better mobility and less height

    ————————————
Before last Sunday it was Pack fans trash talking how they would win. This past week Carolina fans telling how it would be. Now Seahawk fans are mouthing off. Which is interesting given how anemic their O has been lately. After these games are over you never hear from these ‘experts’ again. Funny the way that works.

You can’t let that kind of stuff affect you although I know it had to be difficult with how blatant some of that 49er bias with the stripes was today. I know the Panthers had to look up late in the third quarter and wonder how they were so far behind when they basically dominated the first half of the game. A couple of things that I have noticed this year in the playoff.

    1. The old NFC West has been well represented this year with the Saints, Panthers and 49ers all making the postseason.

    2. The Panthers have a bright future, but today showed their inexperience in the playoffs. Say what you want about bad calls, no calls etc, but an inability to score inside the 10 2x and dumb penalties cost you.

    3. As a fan of any team in the playoffs this weekend the NFL said earlier this week that any call that would be called in the regular season should be called in the playoffs. This was a reaction to last weeks non-calls especially in the 49er/Packer game.

    4. The 49er and Seattle defenses are lights out. The game next week will be fun to watch. Whichever offense can score tds instead of fgs will be the victor.

    5. The Broncos are going to have to stop the run if they are going to win the SB. They score points like nobody else, but this I the playoffs and the defenses are just better now than what they have faced in the regular season.

    6. The pats have found a running game. They are probably the most complete team in the AFC at this point. if you can score through the air and pound it on the run, then you are a scary team.

    7. I wouldn’t call the NFC Champ game the superbowl. While both the niners and hawks D are solid the offenses are suspect and can both disappear at times. The status of Percy Harvin will loom large in that matchup.

    8. Fot the niners the ability to make plays over the middle will be the diff for them. they cannot throw sideline passes every play and expect to win. They will need to get VD open looks and run the all effectively to win.

What I didn’t like about the game is this: If the zebras want to insert themselves in and call flags for extra-curricular activity when a play is over, so be it.

Yet they flag Carolina for Unsportsmanlike Conduct and then Boldin HEAD BUTTS one of the Carolina DB’s, TWICE on the drive where they scored they go-ahead TD. No flag, and he head butted the guy right in front of the official.

I, obviously having watched the game, am NOT saying that one non-call cost Carolina the game.

But it is worth noting that a 15 yard penalty on that 3rd down completion would have put SF 3rd and 20+ back at midfield, instead of the drive continuing and their eventual TD.

In the postseason the refs just need to swallow their whistles except in absolute blatant cases when they have no choice but to throw a flag.

  163. NJ49er says: Jan 13, 2014 3:44 AM

For all those ranting about officiating, or lack thereof in Carolina today, the flags started flying as a result of certain Panthers players whoofing and cheap-shotting early in the contest.

You can expect the Refs to reign things in and, be more attentive to ‘your’ misdeeds, when you call attention to it.

Had you managed to score from inside the 1, after how many attempts, maybe you could have influenced your own outcome?

There was also an explanation from Ref Carl Cheffers regarding the 12 men in the huddle non-call.

The ball had not yet been marked ready for play, therefore, the 12th player was allowed to exit the huddle without a foul being called.

Let’s not overlook the Skuta sack, that was called in your favor, as a roughing the passer penalty as well.
The Official gave Cam another series, on the house, only to see him throw a gift INT to Whitner.

    Panthers’ D is legit.
It wasn’t an easy game for either Team.
When all is said, and done, Cam held the ball too long and, made more poor plays than Kaep did.

9er Defense proved to be just as legit as Carolina’s today.

  164. my1voice57 says: Jan 14, 2014 11:19 AM

Congratulations Carolina Panthers on a wonderful season. Shoring up the O-Line, Secondary, and an additional Wide Receiver should probably be the main focus next year. One of the things I tire of hearing from Colin Kapernick and Co. Is the whinny, “Cam and others got drafted higher than me” woes. Kap, get over it! I have much more respect for what Cam and the Panthers accomplished this year than the 49ers. Kap showed that when he doesn’t have his deep offensive weapons at his disposal, he struggles. I highly doubt that Kap and the 49ers could have accomplished what Cam and the Panthers did with the lack of offensive weapons at their disposal. You would think that with all that the 49ers have been able to do over the past 3 years by making it to the upper levels of the playoffs and beyond that Kap would be grateful. Instead, he’s still living in the past about his draft position three years ago. As a Panthers fan I wish the 49ers well as they move forward but think that Kapernick actually needs to grow up!
