Report: Mike Zimmer to have second interview with Vikings

2bfb3648c6b6a5d2180334473176c4f9

The Vikings interviewed a pair of 49ers assistants on Saturday, completing more than a week’s worth of interviews that has apparently left them ready to progress to the next round of the search process.

Adam Caplan of ESPN reports that Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer will have a second interview with the team early next week. Zimmer has been called the favorite to land the job in multiple reports out of Minnesota and the invitation to return for another conversation won’t do anything to quiet that speculation.

It doesn’t mean that he has the job sewn up, though. Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press reports that the Vikings are expected to add two other finalists to Zimmer as they move toward naming Leslie Frazier’s replacement. Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles is thought to have a good chance of being part of that group, but nothing has been set up yet.

49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman and defensive line coach Jim Tomsula interviewed on Saturday, joining Zimmer, Bowles, Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton, Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. If either of the San Francisco or Seattle coaches are finalists, it may be a while before the Vikings can name their next head coach.

He is so deserving of this. If chosen for the Vikings, he will be sorely missed by Bengals fans.

Knowing nothing about hiring a head coach, I say great call.

Mike Zimmer deserves this job. He’s been passed over too many times in the past. Truthfully, he should’ve been the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys years ago when he was the DC. He’s a classy individual, a constant professional on and off the sideline. He cares about his players and has a real love and passion for the game. I commend the Bengals front office and the coaching staff for hiring him after Dallas didn’t realize what they had. I bet Dallas wishes they had him now. Hey Vikings hire this guy!

  5. vikingdog71 says: Jan 12, 2014 9:11 AM

Zimmer would be great for the Vikes. The dude knows defense and knows how to put a fire under people’s rear ends. Not to mention the Jerry Burns-like pressers will rule.

  6. f1restarter says: Jan 12, 2014 9:22 AM

If Zimmer gets the Vikings job, expect him to be some other team’s defensive coordinator again in 2016.

  7. allday2869 says: Jan 12, 2014 9:22 AM

I’m all in on Coach Zimmer, I think he would be a excellent choice

  8. @Cereal_22 says: Jan 12, 2014 9:26 AM

I like Zimmer but if I’m the Viks I’d give Greg Roman a long look.

  9. rutchaser says: Jan 12, 2014 9:48 AM

Great. We are going to be stuck with Marvin in Cincy. At least I can continue to hear him giggle after losses and say “we just have to keep chopping wood and climbing that mountain.” It’s been 11 years….what’s one more right? Sucks.

  10. thepvyharvin says: Jan 12, 2014 10:00 AM

The fact he is coming back tells me he will be the Vikings coach. Zimmer loves Cincy but it is time he gets his shot. Seems Cincy fans everywhere are loathing him leaving their team which says a lot about Coach Zimmer…I am very excited about the potential signing!!

  11. missjackson75 says: Jan 12, 2014 10:16 AM

Please Vikings, do not let Zimmer leave Winter Park without a contract!!!

  12. elliottcovert says: Jan 12, 2014 10:24 AM

From what I saw on Hard Knocks, it looks like Zimmer uses the tried and true motivational tactics of yelling and swearing at his players.

    I liked what I saw.

  13. joshhatesthesteelers says: Jan 12, 2014 10:27 AM

Don’t do it Zim, that’s a dead end job..

  14. pdmjr says: Jan 12, 2014 10:51 AM

Zimmer is a great guy but not head coach material. He has reached his career peak in Cincy.

Not every great coordinator makes a great head coach

  15. therealbrettfavre says: Jan 12, 2014 10:59 AM

Not sure how successful he will be as a HC. This guy needs to coach defense. Of course that may be the worried Bengals fan in me.

  16. daltongang1 says: Jan 12, 2014 11:10 AM

Don’t know why Zim would go there, they have no QB, AP is in decline, and the team is a mess… They are a 4-6 yr project

  17. golforepar says: Jan 12, 2014 11:18 AM

I guess Zimmer was wondering the trophy cabinet is. Not good!

  18. dragonfly99 says: Jan 12, 2014 11:25 AM

Demand a high paying long term contract Zim.

Isn’t is a bit strange that 49er coaches should be heading off for interviews in Minnesota just before they’re supposed to be in Charlotte for a tough play-off game …….. ?

    Bizarre …….

  20. ravenswhat says: Jan 12, 2014 12:36 PM

I have every confidence in the Vikings ability to screw this up and not hire Zimmer. Every confidence.

  21. lagg1 says: Jan 12, 2014 12:54 PM

Zimmer is a very good coach-tough and fair! His men play hard for him. If I were the Vikings management I would grab him quickly.

  22. taintedsaints2009 says: Jan 12, 2014 1:05 PM

The 1700’s called, they said they want their pre phone mindset back.

Mike zimmer would be a good fit, fixing the Vikings most glaring problem 1st in points allowed 2nd in yards let up this year. Vikings need defense Rick spielman also said he was floored by Arizona DC Todd Bowles football knowledge, so don’t be surprised when they hire him! But personally I think they should hire Mike Zimmer HC Bring Scott linehan as OC, Ray Horton as DC both have ties to zimmer And win some damn games !!Skol Vikes!!

  26. pillowporkers says: Jan 12, 2014 2:25 PM

    @Daltongang

At least the Vikings know we don’t have a qb. Which means zimmer we get to help choose the next one. The Bengals on the other hand are in denial that their qb is average at best. So you guys will keep being between 7-9 and 11-5, lose the first round of the playoffs, and never win with Andy. Poor rams are similar to you guys. I’d rather be us.

  27. kazkal says: Jan 12, 2014 2:55 PM

It will hurt losing Zimmer,Vikings will be a very lucky to have him…26 Zimmer players are Scary wait until he has 53.

  28. daltongang1 says: Jan 12, 2014 3:04 PM

    @pillowporkers

Dude our QB was 3rd in the NFL in TD’s and 7th in Yards.. And you have Josh Freeman… Enough Said

  29. pillowporkers says: Jan 12, 2014 3:16 PM

    Daltongang:

What does Josh freeman have to do with next year? He won’t be on our team let alone our starter in 2014. Andy Dalton will be for you guys. 0-3 in playoffs…enough said. Keep using more stats to rationalize that Andy Dalton is good. He will never be considered a top 10 QB in the league. Your fanhood is blinding. Its alright. I rationalized ponder improving for the good part of two years.

  30. natijim235 says: Jan 12, 2014 3:33 PM

deserves the job but as a long time bengal fan he will be sorely missed

  31. deltaoracle says: Jan 12, 2014 3:51 PM

Doesn’t matter who the coach is unless he can find a good QB.

  32. Norseman says: Jan 12, 2014 3:56 PM

Rather see Roman and Tomsula as HC and DC of the Vikings.

  33. jmattharrison says: Jan 12, 2014 3:56 PM

Lifelong Bengals fan and would hate to see him go. However, he deserves the chance to be a head coach. Great guy, great coach, no nonsense, highly respected by the entire team.

If he goes to the Vikings, I know what NFC team I am becoming a fan of.

  34. pappavike says: Jan 12, 2014 4:00 PM

How far did that qb if yours take you? Nice to compare your starter against our 3rd stringer. What’s next, comparing training staff against water boys?

  36. The Great Ted Thompson the Genius says: Jan 12, 2014 4:37 PM

I don’t know anything about Mike Zimmer except that the stories mentioning him as a head coach prospect has comments from Cincy fans praising him and saying he’ll be missed. The fans say exactly the opposite on the Jay Gruden stories. At least the Vikings seem to be smarter than the Redskins, if that’s anything to brag about.

  37. whatjusthapped says: Jan 12, 2014 5:09 PM

If Zimmer is such a great head coaching prospect, you would think he could land a more coveted job than the Vikings. Out of all the job openings, the Vikings have the furthest to go before they return to being competitive.

The Vikings will eventually get a head coach just like they will eventually draft another qb. Its just the chances of either of them working out isn’t all that great.

Don’t care where or how the interview took place, I’m just amazed they allowed them to take place the day before a play-off game.

  39. rhusby28 says: Jan 12, 2014 7:03 PM

Zimmer will be the next coach unless the Vikings can’t work out a deal. Bowles has been linked to the ” final 3″, but no date has been set for his second interview. Anyone notice the third candidate in the ” final 3″ has not been mentioned? By saying there are 3 canidates if the Vikings can’t work out a deal with Zimmer, they can then move on to Bowles. If a deal with Bowles doesn’t go well, then the Vikings can continue their search untill they find the guy they want.

for the love of god do not do it zimmer, if you were going to be a head coach for anyone it should be the bengals, marvin knows personnel but not coaching, be like d. lebeau and be a d coor and stay comfortable and maybe you can be our head coach when lewis goes to gm or gets fired

  43. 92nick182govikings says: Jan 13, 2014 12:08 AM

Lets just get our head coach and get back to winning ways. If we get the rite qb in free agency or the draft we can be a contender in the nfc north next year.

  44. gsmith1031 says: Jan 13, 2014 6:34 AM

Zimmer has done things no other coordinator can do. He’s taken players that nobody wanted and players that were thought to not be tough enough to make it in the NFL and made them solid defensive players. See Vontaze Burfict or Michael Johnson. Hope you stay Zimmer! I would hope the fact you’ll be with a team with a winning record will play in your decision!

  45. vex24 says: Jan 13, 2014 8:07 AM

If Zimmer leaves The Bengals, look for Jim Schwartz to become Cincinnati’s new DC.
