Vernon Davis touchdown gives 49ers 13-10 lead at half

49ers Panthers Football AP

The 49ers didn’t look good for long, but they looked good at exactly the right time.

The 49ers took a 13-10 lead just before halftime of a game the Panthers frankly dominated, with a replay review touchdown to Vernon Davis. Coach Jim Harbaugh drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for running out onto the field to dispute it.

Reviews showed Davis dragged his second foot for the score, which covers up what was otherwise a bad first half for 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. He’s 11-of-24 passing for 121 yards, and missed several opportunities.

Of course, the Panthers did too, setting for three points out of two trips to the 1-yard line, with a 49ers stand and a field goal.

Cam Newton and Steve Smith have been sharp, and until the final drive, the Panthers defense has held.

But untimely penalties and a general loss of cool has hurt the Panthers, and left the home crowd stunned that they’re actually behind.

If they’re going to flag Carolina for a headbutt then Boldin should have flagged for doing the exact same thing.

    Its quite pathetic

It must be Troy Aikman’s time of the month because he’scomplained the entire half. The Panthers D loves to talk and this is one physical game. I love it.

  6. skywriter says: Jan 12, 2014 2:44 PM

Niners basically have been given 3 points from headbutt call and 7 points from ignored headbutt call… not-to-mention uncalled kick to Cam’s head and Bowman getting away with multiple personally fouls on his kamikaze dive and pushing and shoving and butting afterwards…

  7. droyer85 says: Jan 12, 2014 2:44 PM

It’s now or never for the 9ers… if they can’t win a Super Bowl with 8 pro bowlers, they won’t be able to win one after they sign Kaepernick and have to lose a few of those pro bowlers to stay under the kaep.

  8. aljack88 says: Jan 12, 2014 2:45 PM

    Great leader you are!!!

  10. beastnyg says: Jan 12, 2014 2:45 PM

I guess not all headbuts are created equal. These refs are horrible. Panthers have to beat the niners and these refs in order to advance.

  11. packhawk04 says: Jan 12, 2014 2:46 PM

I want boldin to punch a panther in the groin right in front of an official… i bet 5 bucks he doesnt called flagged for it.

Niners hitting the ATM at half, those refs aren’t gonna pay themselves. Luckily Bank of America stadium has some.

Man this game is intense! I hope my niners pull it out but damn I’m nervous. Carolina is an awesome team. If they win u can be damn sure I’m rootin for them to beat seattle next week lol. I think they definitely can because seattles offense will struggle against that D

  15. juiceonfire says: Jan 12, 2014 2:47 PM

It’s funny that people complain about harbaugh and Carroll does the same stuff like pretty much being at midfield during lynch’s second touchdown and not getting flagged for that

  16. whosyourdaddy2013 says: Jan 12, 2014 2:49 PM

  17. judsonjr says: Jan 12, 2014 2:49 PM

I think they call the Coach of the Panthers Riverboat Ron because thats how he and his entire illegal alien roach family came into this county, the MS river.

So much trash talk in this years playoffs. I guess the professional part is out the window. It take away from the game some with all the extra crap after every whistle. Harbaugh should be flagged EVERY time hes on the field. Could he be anymore annoying?

  21. beastnyg says: Jan 12, 2014 2:52 PM

They also had 12 men in the huddle

  22. neatz says: Jan 12, 2014 2:53 PM

This is so bad officiating horrible.. looks Like NFL wants to send 49ers to SeaHawks and get their ass kicked. Feel sorry for the Panthers with officiating..looks Like a fixed game.. not a fan of either team

  23. pgilbert2013 says: Jan 12, 2014 2:55 PM

Skywriter… May I suggest a Kleenex tissue? Have you ever heard of the hardest hitting back Donte Whitner. He’s been called for so many 15 yard penalties on great hits.

Little head-but, that’s bush league crying. Step your complaints up man. This is the NFL.

  24. pboy415 says: Jan 12, 2014 2:57 PM

  27. thestrategyexpert says: Jan 12, 2014 2:58 PM

It’s also odd that they went for 4th and G from the 1, but when they were at the 2 soon after now they think it’s a better strategy to kick the FG. Do they just flip coins on the sidelines to make decisions?

  45. bigguy54 says: Jan 12, 2014 3:16 PM

On my DVR they scored wity 2:40 left in the game, so they would have to run a play before the 2 min warning. If he takes a knee, there would have more than 2:40 left. It still would have been the better move, but then we would have missed a great finish. The premise of the article is correct, the facts are wrong though.

  46. dayus49 says: Jan 12, 2014 3:16 PM

Lol look at all the posts with the whining. It’s by Seahawk and Panthers fans. The ONLY penalty that should have been called was the headbutt by Boldin. Rest was legit. Panthers are digging their own holes. Go drink some warm milk and call down whiners. See you in Seattle.

12 men in the huddle, Harbaugh on the field DURING the play, and Davis’ toe out of bounds. Wow.

  50. blackngold4877 says: Jan 12, 2014 3:21 PM

SF had 12 in the huddle and Harbaugh was about 5 yards in the field of play when the pass was thrown. Refs are calling this heavily in favor of SF.

  51. bigdaddyrockytop says: Jan 12, 2014 3:22 PM

Mocking Newton? Immature and disrespectful. Kaep acts like a punk kid. Someday he will be asked to be the face of the franchise, he needs to clean up his act.

  53. jimsnchz says: Jan 12, 2014 3:23 PM

  54. patriots123456 says: Jan 12, 2014 3:28 PM

Apparently only soft head butting is illegal. More intense head butting is now legal.

I would really like to watch a playoff game that the players determine the outcome. Apparently that’s not possible today.

Every week the officials screw up bigtime.

    Very disturbing trend IMO…

  55. kkalama1 says: Jan 12, 2014 3:28 PM

    -seahawks fan

  56. skolvikesskol says: Jan 12, 2014 3:28 PM

No dog in this fight, but the refs have slanted this game towards SF.

    No doubt.

  57. droyer85 says: Jan 12, 2014 3:30 PM

Don’t forget the 49ers are owned by the mafia… The NFL ousted Eddie DeBartolo (Michael Corleone), but they let Denise DeBartolo York (Connie Corleone) stay on with her son to run the team. When you see the refs calls it starts to make more sense.

  58. braceyourselffor12 says: Jan 12, 2014 3:31 PM

    Whiner

    1. Someone who makes frequent complaints especially about little things

    Source: Merriam-Webster

How many Niner fans have posted with the said above behavior? Seems to me to be nothing but butt hurt Seahack, Panther and NFC team loser fans.

Eat it, eat it raw. The Niners are not stopping.

    GO NINERS!!!!

  59. nomoreseasontix says: Jan 12, 2014 3:32 PM

No reason at all to watch the post season. The results are clearly being influenced by the officials. Every game I’ve watched has been influenced in the direction of the NFL’s desired match-ups.
You could have picked the championship match-ups before the wild card games.
It’s so blatantly clear that it’s an insult to NFL fans.

  60. pgilbert2013 says: Jan 12, 2014 3:32 PM

D-berg, did you tune into the game at the start? Every play the Panthers were getting into their face. You can only poke the bear so many times before it rips your head off.

The nice thing you are not seeing hat anymore.

It’s perfect that you don’t like the Niners and your Jags should have a better team next year, but stop with the crying business. Why don’t you mention what a fine goal line D the 49ers have… Be positive, negative people are a true downer.

  61. hess97 says: Jan 12, 2014 3:37 PM

Condolences to Harbaugh for the loss of his grandfather today. Wouldn’t want anyone else coaching the niners.

  62. rgledz says: Jan 12, 2014 3:42 PM

12 men in the huddle, number 12 runs right by the official and no flag……Boldin headbutts right in front of the official who steps in to break up the altercation and no flag. Absolutely laughable. I guess since the Packers are out of the playoffs the officials have a new team to bail out.

  63. flyeaglefly says: Jan 12, 2014 3:42 PM

These refs were not going to let Carolina win…more importantly, not let the 49ers lose…at least five blown calls…multiple flagrant fouls on bolden…too many men on the field….offsides….pass interfence…bring back the replacement refs…this is a joke…
