Vikings hire Mike Zimmer as next head coach

Mike Zimmer AP

The Minnesota Vikings have their next head coach in Mike Zimmer.

Zimmer, who has spent the last two days in Minnesota interviewing with the team, will be hired today, according to Adam Schefter and Jay Glazer.

The 57-year-old Zimmer is getting his first head-coaching position after many years as a respected defensive coordinator. Zimmer has been the defensive coordinator of the Bengals since 2008, and before that was defensive coordinator in Atlanta in 2007 and defensive coordinator in Dallas from 2000 to 2006.

In Minnesota, Zimmer takes over a team that fired head coach Leslie Frazier following a 5-10-1 season and a last-place finish in the NFC North.

The Minnesota Vikings impending dynasty will hit the NFL by storm, but don’t say you didn’t hear it here first.

Talent wise, we have the best team in the NFL and arguably one of the best teams of all time (other than QB).

Once we draft our franchise QB (and we will) multiple superbowls will be coming to Minneapolis. They are setting themselves up to dominate the NFC for the decade.

Every team will start trying to emulate the Vikings in every way.
Every fan will be jealous of Vikings nation.
Every owner will be jealous they don’t own a historic future dynasty team like the Vikings.
Every coach will fear traveling to Minneapolis to face this legendary Vikings squad.
Every other teams players wish they’d have been drafted by the superior Vikings roster.
Every GM will wish they had the drafting smarts that Rick Spielman has.
Every blade of grass will wish it would have been grown in the new gorgeous stadium that belongs to Minnesota.

The Minnesota Vikings have now been decided as the symbol of greatness. The Minnesota Vikings are a franchise that has dominated for decades with a .538 overall winning percentage to prove it, ranked #3 in the league worldwide. We also have the most NFC North titles with 18, 7 more than the second closest “rival”. The NFL has recently scammed the Vikings out of multiple Super Bowl rings because they envy our greatness, jealousy like this prevents the Vikings from this, but we will succeed. The impending Vikings dynasty will soon follow, multiple Super Bowl rings will be coming our way and our greatness will be shown worldwide.

Many of you so called “haters” will say this is not true, but haters are known to envy greatness. Martin Luther King is a great example of a person who resembles the Vikings organization, he changed the world and was hated for it, but people recognize him for greatness

The Minnesota Vikings are the prototypical franchise. We are the Lambourghini of cars, the iPhones of cellular devices, The Kate Uptons of females, and our presence can be felt worldwide by our profound greatness. We are the boat floating proudly on your favorite teams tears, sailing to multiple championships.

  19. bleedgreen says: Jan 15, 2014 10:58 AM

As much as you need a good defense to win consistently, you can have an elite defense and not win unless your offense can score points. When’s the last time a team with an elite defense won the Super Bowl? The ravens D wasn’t elite last year. The Steelers? But it wasn’t the D that won the Super Bowl for them, it was clutch play by Ben and Holmes. Really, the last time a true elite defense won the Super Bowl was 2003. Mike Zimmer isn’t going to make their D as good as that team. I feel like you’re better off with a great offense and an average defense than a pretty good defense and no offense to speak of. The offense in Minnesota hasn’t been good for years outside of a single year with Brett Favre.

  24. Awol.West says: Jan 15, 2014 11:01 AM

An improved D could have this team back in the playoff picture, simply because AP can keep them fresh. They do have some playmakers on both sides of the ball, but definitely need to bring in a QB to compete with Cassel.

Great fit for the Vikings. And a great fit for Minnesota. Vikings fans don’t care for the the laid-back, quiet, say-nothing-in-press-conferences type coach (Frazier). They want an honest, say what you feel, speak your mind type guy.

As bad as their QB situation was last year, the defense is what killed them. If games were 59 minutes long, Minnesota wins at least 9 games AND the division. Zimmer will fix the Alan Williams-led last minute collapses.

If we don’t get a decent QB, it won’t matter. Having said that, he seems like the best fit. One way to gauge that is to listen to what the players and fan base of the old team are saying — and they’re all bummed about losing Zimmer. Conversely, it’s been crickets (or shouts of joy) from the Ravens fan base regarding the Lions new head coach.

  37. The Great Ted Thompson the Genius says: Jan 15, 2014 11:09 AM

It’s so funny how teams always go for the opposite of the guy they just got rid of. Leslie Frazier was laid back and calm while this guy is known for being kind of a hothead. I hope people don’t think he’s going to be a good coach just because he yells and screams at people.

As a Viking fan, Zimmer was my first choice after Frazier was canned. Hopefully, he’ll toughen up that defense, and HOPEFULLY, Spielman will get him the tools he needs to do the job.

If all four top-rated QBs are gone by the time the Vikings pick at #8, don’t be surprised to see them take Louis Nix with that pick with Zimmer as HC now. Would love to see a return to the days when the Viking DTs were able to stuff the run with the William Wall.

Zimmer sounds like a first-class guy, with the zeal to win. Hope he’s successful.

Congrats to Mike Zimmer! But can someone explain what the Vikings are doing? They had a defensive coach in Frazier. He’s not loud in your face coach like Zimmer but he’s a defensive mind. I believe you only bring in a Defensive coach when you have your young/old franchise QB in place. Pagano had Luck when he went to Indy, but Luck was a “One in a lifetime QB” and made Pagano better than he is. If the Vikings had a chance at Teddy Bridgewater, then this might would work. But im afraid they’ll reach on Bortles and Carr like they did with Ponder! It might be deja vu in Minnesota again folks.

It’s getting past comical and becoming pathetic just how much Vikings’ fans think that they “rule the NFC North” yet have nothing to show for it. Since its inception in 2002 the Packers have won the division 7 times, the Bears 3 times and the Vikes twice. You cant argue with facts. You can say, ” well the Vikes have 18 division wins total”, but what do they have to show for it? No trophies.. Start looking for a quarterback, and stop running your mouths…even if it is the only running they can do in Minnesota…

Yeah McCarthy is an AMAZING football coach — It would truly be impossible to coach the likes of Favre and Rodgers. Childress won in Minnesota with Farve and was fired the minute he left.

Put McCarthy on ANY team other than a team with Rodgers, Brees, Manning and Brady and the fat piece of trash is fired within 2 years. Did you see how inept he was without Rodgers this year? McCarthy is in the bottom 5 coaches in the league.

By the way, how is that Packers offense doing in the playoffs? Oh wait, they are all at home (some place other than Wisconsin), watching the playoffs on the tele, just like the horrible vikes team.

    Haha, packer fans are funny.

  96. 2ruefan says: Jan 15, 2014 11:46 AM

You know what folks? The HC coach job is more about how well a football guy can become essentially a manager, mentor, teacher, strategist, politician, communicator and a host of other things that he probably never had to do before unless he was a HC somewhere. And the BALANCING of them is the part many former coordinators seem to be struggle with sometimes.

Success as a coordinator is not an indicator of future success as a HC.

As a Viking fan, I have NO idea if Zimmer is in fact Head Coaching material. Only time will tell. But I’ll tell you this.. just because he was a good defensive coach doesn’t tell me ANYTHING about how he’s gonna fare as a HC.

And one more thing… the Rah-Rah, in your face, vitriolic, profanity laced tirades are not befitting of a leader. So, he better consider that aspect of his personality or he will lose credibility VERY quickly with his players. It’s OK to be passionate and fiery, but if he is demeaning to his players, he will lose that Locker room faster than you can say “great hire”…

We’ll go back an add thru subtraction again.

    duece5 says:

Spielman had nothing if anything to do of bringing Frazier in. Childress was coach in 2007, as he had to replace Mike Tomlin, who became HC of the Steelers obviously.

Frazier was promoted by the Wilfs before the 2010 season ended as Childress was shown the door with 6 games remaining.

Frazier guided them to a 3-3 record, and he was named our HC.

In 2012, Spileman became the official GM of the Vikings and now controls all football operations, including hiring/firing/promoting with the aid of the HC.

I know you aren’t a Viking fan, but Spielman had zero to do with Frazier.

Losing both coordinators Bengals will be stuck bragging about last season division title.

Vikings will have issues for a few more years. Zim may help the defense but the QB is as big, if not bigger, issue.

I remember when the Ravens fired Cam and hired Caldwell. They were stoked and credited him for Flacco doing better. After the egg he laid this past season they blame Caldwell. Seriously the only person to blame in Baltimore is Joe. The Lions will have an uphill battle in the NFCN.

Bears defense is in shambles, Cutler under performs, and they have a rebuilding process to go thru.

The Packers defense is still bad, the loss of Rodgers displayed that.

At this point any team can win the NFCN. It’s still the Packers to lose tho. As far as the fan who brought up the Vikes having the most division titles, big deal no SBs to show for it.

  141. steelerben says: Jan 15, 2014 12:49 PM

Zimmer will be a good hire based on his ability to instill work ethic and discipline while managing personalities.

A perfect example of this is his work with Burfict. The kid, despite all the talent he has, was considered too great a risk. He was “lazy”, made too many mental errors, and wasn’t able to control himself on the field. Zimmer was able to turn him into a top flight linebacker and one of the top playmakers on their defense. Same thing with the Adam “Pacman” Jones reclaimation project.

This team is going to have a lot of young players moving through the roster of the next few seasons and Zimmer will be a great person to make sure that they come in and maximize their potential.

“McCarthy still got his team into the playoffs, which is more than any other coach did in the NFC North. ”

The Packers went to the playoffs only because the Bears and Lions refused to go.

The Packers new mantra is One and Done!

Mike McCarthy without Favre or Rodgers:

    3-6-1 (.350)

Leslie Frazier without Favre or Rodgers:

    19-31-1 (.382)

Love how the Vikings were going to “take their time”. Meanwhile there are 4 teams that are playing for 2 super bowl spots with coaches that the Browns will be interviewing.

  162. duece5 says: Jan 15, 2014 1:34 PM

Packers fans all over this thread, underlying the true concern for them.

They KNOW Zimmer is a find.

They KNOW McCarthy has serious issues, especially coming to light sans Rodgers, sans a defense, sans an oline.

Time is ticking on Rodgers’ career…..time is ticking even more for MM and TT.

The Vikings had the best 2nd half of the season, and we had INEPT coaching, inept defense, and inept QB situations! We were 4-3-1…..best record in the North….DESPITE the OBVIOUS issues!! What did McCarthy do????? They were 3-4-1……please……keep MM…..dude looked more lost than Frazier without his wooby Erin!!

With Zimmer, the ceiling is high, sky is the limit.

    Spielman, YOU ARE A GENIUS!!!!

Now, since your job depends on it, Spielman, move up to #2-swap a pick with STL, offer our 1st rounder for 2015 to move up….and grab Manziel.

    Can almost smell it!!!!!!

  163. filthymcnasty1 says: Jan 15, 2014 1:34 PM

Zimmer is perhaps best known for his salty language.

And he should get lots of profanity practice time while watching game tape of that noodle armed Ponder chick.

And there sits Cleveland. The ugly girl nobody still wants to dance with. (nobody trusts Jimmy Haslam, nor should they).

  165. bengalsucker says: Jan 15, 2014 1:39 PM

Funny how people are saying this is the end of the Bengals. Yeah I was hoping Bengals would can Marvin and hire Zimmer. But we all know Mike Brown doesn’t fire coaches before their contract is up. Now, as far as OC goes, we upgraded there in my opinion. Hue Jackson will bring out the strengths in our offense rather than making a game plan for Tom Brady and giving it to Andy Dalton. Hue will focus on the run and keep Andy around 25 or so passes. Not 51 like Jay did. Now for Zim. He deserves this shot. Yeah we’re gonna miss him but Guenther is a up and coming coach. He’s the one who has made many undrafted guys into very good LB’s. Guenther has been a huge part of this defense and even Zimmer and Gruden wanted to hire him as DC and DC assistant accordingly. So he must be good. So don’t count the Bengals out already. We are getting good coaches.

  166. seals1 says: Jan 15, 2014 1:40 PM

Have to say the Bengals fans have me liking the hire. Is Mike Brown awake or just stubborn?

Time will tell but let’s hope the Defense can make a turn. The only thing worse than the QB play in MN has been the defense.

Welcome to the Vikes Zimmer. If you have 3 or4 D Backs, a MLB and a fat tackle you can bring with you it will help your chances.

  167. frank booth says: Jan 15, 2014 1:45 PM

Remember Dave Wannstedt? He was the hot coaching candidate that everyone wanted in 1993- a much hotter property than what Zimmer is today.

    That didn’t go so well.

The NFC North has only been around since 2002, so the Vikings couldn’t have won 18 division titles given the fact it’s only been around for 12 years. The Queens have won the division twice in that time frame- a far cry from the Vikings of the NFC Central.

The Minnesota inferiority complex will continue.

The Vikings should enjoy their new hire now, at least until next season, when their hopes are crushed. At the rate the Vikings go through coaches, he should be gone by the time the new stadium opens. Hopefully they can sell out the bandbox they are playing in for the next two years.

  168. filthymcnasty1 says: Jan 15, 2014 1:45 PM

The embarrassing Vikings have lost 4 straight season series to the Packers, and that required Rick Spieldope to find a fall guy.

Today, Mike Zimmer is the new fall guy.

  169. im2fast4you123 says: Jan 15, 2014 2:02 PM

I hope we switch to an attacking 4-3 defense and get rid of the stupid Tampa 2.

  170. Frazier28/7 says: Jan 15, 2014 2:04 PM

Mike Zimmer and Johhny Manziel/Blake Bortles or David Carr, this is going be fun.

Meanwhile Paker fans continue to embarrass themselves with commenting on Viking threads. Funny thing is if not for Rodgers, McFatty would’ve been fired years ago along with Thompson for having a terrible roster and continualy missing on high draft choices while also keeping Capers as thier D-coordinator. How’d you guys do with stopping the team from California in your elements during the playoffs?? Lost again, huh? Go figure.

Ponder and Freeman won’t be on the roster next year.

  171. jcbadger34 says: Jan 15, 2014 2:06 PM

If Zimmer is such a “find” as I saw one Vikings fan put it……how come he’s been interviewing for head coaching jobs for YEARS now, yet has never been hired until now? He’s been seen as a “hot head coach prospect” for at least half a decade now, yet hadn’t found a job.

Do you guys honestly think he was turning down all these teams, just waiting for an opportunity to coach the Vikings? With that awful defense, no QB, and now playing outdoors in frigid Minneapolis? Is that what you honestly believe?

Seems to me all those other teams that interviewed him saw something they didn’t like. Lots of teams have hired some no-name, mediocre coaches instead of offering the job to Zimmer.

Not saying he’s going to be a bad head coach, because no one can know how he’ll be until he actually is a head coach. Just saying that the Vikings fans acting like they’re “starting the dynasty,” after getting a coach that every team with a coaching vacancy over the past 4+ years has passed on, is pretty hilarious. About what we’ve come to expect from the delusional fans in Minnesota.

  172. @Cereal_22 says: Jan 15, 2014 2:10 PM

I cannot wait to see this hot head interact with the media.

  173. filthymcnasty1 says: Jan 15, 2014 2:12 PM

Coach Zimmer planned on starting his introductory press conference with a stirring motivational speech on tradition.

Then the Viking PR lady had to remind him that “tradition” is a bit of a sore subject in MN.

  174. bigcowboy says: Jan 15, 2014 2:13 PM

This guy is a total winner……..if he gets GK as OC and drafts a capable QB, the Vikes will make noise quickly.

  176. leatherface2012 says: Jan 15, 2014 2:53 PM

All that means is you barely won half your games, LMAO.

    youre right, this sounds horrible

Since the team’s first season in 1961, the Vikings have had one of the highest winning percentages in the NFL.[8] They are also one of only six NFL teams to win at least 15 games during the regular season. The Vikings have won one NFL Championship, in 1969, prior to the league’s merger with the American Football League (AFL). Since the merger, they have qualified for the playoffs 25 times, third-most in the league

  177. jjackwagon says: Jan 15, 2014 2:55 PM

Quick question…has there ever been a Vikings HC that went on to be a successful NFL HC somewhere else? Anyone…anyone…Bueller? Bueller? (crickets)

  179. rockbottom37 says: Jan 15, 2014 3:22 PM

Not sure about this guy. As a Vikings fan I would have felt better about Caldwell at least the guy has a good HC resume

  180. rockbottom37 says: Jan 15, 2014 3:26 PM

Vikings are screwed , great hire. Signed the rest of the NFC north.

  181. tonyc920 says: Jan 15, 2014 3:46 PM

This team will never achieve anything close to greatness until the GM is fired. He even admits he has made serious draft mistakes. Signing a free agent QB with questionable personal habits, play him 1 week and then sit, at a cap cost of something like $8 million ? How the Wilfs allowed him to stay and Frazier ended up the scapegoat tells me one thing, they haven’t a clue how to operate a successful NFL team.
And I’m not even a Vikings fan. Just a knowledgeable football fan.

  182. voiceofrealism says: Jan 15, 2014 3:52 PM

The Vikings need a QB and by the time they maybe get an offense in place, Peterson will be gone. The window is closing fast and they are not ready at all.

  183. kazkal says: Jan 15, 2014 4:55 PM

Good luck Zimmer you deserve it and you’ll be missed.Today Vikings became my 2nd favorite team.

  184. ohiobears says: Jan 15, 2014 4:58 PM

I think Zimmer will do good given a couple years. Hell of a coach and honestly I was thrilled to be looking at someone other than that d bag in Detroit, just not as thrilled vikes scored Zimmer.

  188. pappavike says: Jan 17, 2014 3:03 AM

Zimms was great move. The Vikes needed some one that would hold them accountable!! I’m not a big fan of Norv Turner but sounds like thats the way thier leaning. I’m hoping they give Jim Swartz a look for defense coordinator they do need to draft a Qb to develop, So resigning Cassel would be a smart move!! The Vikes have some major holes to fill!! De, Nt, Db,Lb, And guard. Speilman has been reluctant to take players via free agency, building through the draft is a great way to stay young, But getting a couple of veterans to fill some holes helps get the young guys some much needed experience!! I know it sounds cliché but taking the best player available in the draft isn’t a bad idea!! Most of the franchise Qb’s went in the later rounds

  189. icebowler says: Jan 17, 2014 8:43 PM

    Zimmer = Schwartz

  190. tjthrash2112 says: Jan 22, 2014 7:15 AM

This is a turn around for the Vikings.
    - They have finally picked up some very good coaches in Mike Zimmer, and Norv Turner.
    - They have a talent rich team, and are building through the draft. A proven way to be successful.
    - The ugly, cheap Metrodome which has been a plague on the team since it was built, is now going down. They are building a new beautiful, billion dollar stadium, and that area of Minneapolis will be just beautiful as well.
This all leads to a rebirth for the Vikes. So much is new for this team, and the change looks really good. This is a team to watch.
    - I’m a Packer fan (Family is from Wisconsin) that lives in Minnesota. -
