Jason Hatcher added to Pro Bowl roster

Defensive tackle Jason Hatcher is set to become a free agent come March, but he’ll have one more chance to wear a Cowboys helmet even if he doesn’t wind up re-signing with the team.

Hatcher broke the word that he has been added to the Pro Bowl roster on Twitter on Thursday afternoon. He’ll be taking the place of Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata in this year’s conference-free approach to the game. Ngata was bothered by a variety of injuries over the course of the season, missing one game as a result.

Hatcher missed a game because of injury as well, but that didn’t stop him from putting up a strong season in his eighth year with the Cowboys. He had a career high 11 sacks and forced a pair of fumbles on the interior of the defensive line, which made him a rare bright spot on a unit that struggled for much of the season.

While Hatcher should have suitors off such a strong year, the fact that he turns 32 in July will likely keep him from landing the kind of contract he would have gotten if he’d done the same thing five years away.

  1. Longtime ravens fan here, I don’t think Haloti Ngata is as hungry as he once was. I remember when he was a constant force in the defense. BEFORE he started getting recognized as one of the best DT’s in the game was when he played like one of the best DT’s in the game, but he got his contract and hasn’t really been the same since.

  2. Hatcher is above average, whether it’s his motor or teammates, he’s inconsistent and will get overpaid. Never mind the money, I’m a fan of a front office carrying out a strategy to allocate the best roster possible. Much like Seattle acquiring Matt Flynn at a higher price, backing up Russell Wilson on a third round rookie deal. Hindsight is a different story.

  3. Ngata in the Pro Bowl? They must not have seen how journeyman center Fernando V pushed him around like a lightweight.

  4. I’ve personally got no use for a player that only excels in a contract year and has major suction after signing a new contract… having been rewarded for a previous season.
And how difficult WAS IT to stand out on the worst defense in the NFL?
