Report: Vikings to hire George Edwards as defensive coordinator

Edwards_George

The Vikings aren’t wasting much time filling out Mike Zimmer’s first staff.

Norv Turner is reportedly close to becoming their offensive coordinator and Alex Marvez of FOX Sports reports that Dolphins linebackers coach George Edwards is leaving his current job to be the defensive coordinator. A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that a deal is not done yet, however.

Edwards spent the 2003 season as the Redskins’ defensive coordinator under Steve Spurrier and had the same job with the Bills during the 2010 and 2011 seasons before being replaced by Dave Wannstedt before Chan Gailey’s final year as the head coach in Buffalo. This was his second season as the Dolphins’ linebackers coach and he also had a previous stint in that role from 2005 to 2009.

Edwards worked for Zimmer in Dallas for a couple of years before making the jump to Washington. Zimmer hasn’t said whether he’ll be calling the defenses in Minnesota, although that question will likely be asked during his introductory press conference on Friday morning.

I like the experienced coordinator for the offense but I think it makes sense for Zimmer to bring in a guy that will run Zimmer’s defense rather than someone who has his own way of doing things. I’ve never heard of this Edwards guy so I hope he works out.

He did a tremendous job as DC for the Redskins under Spurrier. I can’t think of a better guy to lead the worst defense in the division.

    Why?

I feel bad for Vikings fans….this guy was the DC in Buffalo for some historically bad defenses. They were awful. Good luck….

Hard to be excited about a guy who was fired for Dave Wannstedt! But there are very few people I would trust more about defense than Mike Zimmer. Fingers crossed that he ends up calling the defensive plays. And that Bills fans are just blaming him for bad personnel.

I love people having strong opinions about this hire.

Listen folks, the defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings is Mike Zimmer. Once Norv is in place as OC, Zimmer won’t spend 5 seconds thinking about the offense again.

This guy is there because he’s willing to work in an environment where he has no power and gets along well with the person who does. Period.

I expected Zimmer to make a fantastic hire for his DC. Not so much. This is brutal. Hopefully he will run Zimmer’s system. Otherwise, their defense could be in trouble.

I think the important info here is that there are no in house hires, or keeping the same coordinators.

May the Vikings saw something that we as Dolphins fans didn’t see this year, because our Linebackers sucked all year long.

This guy better bring his A game.

The Packers will be back with Rodgers, the Bears offense is on the rise and the Lions have as much talent as either of them if not more. That’s 6 tough games a year to count on right there.

I would have liked to keep Leslie as our DC again. He was great in that role. But I concur, sounds like what we need to hope for here is this guy just filling a role and doing what he’s told.

Bad move!!!! Zimmer should just run the whole D himself.

He was terrible in Buffalo and heavily contributed to Chan Gailey’s lack of success.

Multiple sources are saying he is coming to Minnesota, but no deal is done. Vikings plan to interview others for DC. Looks like everyone jumped the gun on this one.

Zimmer is the D-coordinator, and besides, the new guy certainly can’t be any worse than Dom Capers.

Vikings got exactly what they needed for coaches. One of the best offensive minds in the NFL to run the offense like Tom Moore did in Indy under Dungy. Zimmer is the defensive coordinator/HC and hired someone he trusts to get the title, all while bringing some fire to the organization.

Nice job Spielman and the Wilfs. I live in IL, but I now just might go ahead and pickup season tickets for TCF Stadium.

This is terrible, worst DC in NFL history.

He is not DC material, he can’t even handle being a positional coach.

    Poor Vikings fans.

Its like re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. It hardly matters who it is, the results will be the same.

You better hope so. You sound like you’re trying to convince yourself.

The defense is Zimmers show, whoever they hire will be his mouthpiece, plain and simple.
