Bill O’Brien will call offensive plays for Texans

The Texans haven’t hired an offensive coordinator for coach Bill O’Brien’s first staff in Houston, but whoever takes the job won’t be responsible for calling the offensive plays.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle spoke to O’Brien recently and the coach told him that he’d be calling the offensive plays for the Texans. That’s not a particularly shocking development since almost all of O’Brien’s coaching experience has been on the offensive side of the ball and he’s run offenses at both the pro and college level.

McClain believes that O’Brien will be calling plays for a quarterback that the Texans take with the first overall pick of the draft. McClain writes that the Texans won’t admit it, but that will be their choice although none of the possibilities for that pick have moved ahead of the others at this point.

That may be speculation, but it’s hardly out of left field for a team without a quarterback that’s now coached by someone who credits Tom Brady with helping him learn a lot that has helped him become an NFL head coach.

  1. The Texans hired the wrong coach this offseason.

Mike Zimmer is the next Bellichick.

Bill O’Brien is the next Mike Shanahan.

  2. I thought he did a good job of play calling when he was with the Pats. Creative and not very predictable. Of course he also had full strength Gronk and Hernandez to work with as well as Welker.

I think the Texans will see a major turn around next season.

  3. I feel bad for the texans, this team went 13-3 with a terrible QB. Imagine how good they could of been with a half decent QB. To bad there desprate now and making hire’s like this. Another wanna be Pats Offense that’s going to fail…..hard.

  5. McClain chastised all of us in a Houston Chronicle chat in November 2010 for suggesting Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator. He said it would never happen or something to that effect. His loyalty still lies to Tennessee and the Texans have been feeding bs to Pancakes as we call him since inception.

  6. I trust Bill O’Brien he fired all the dead weight if he wants Romeo to coach his defense its cause he trust him I think it was a great hire those who think other wise are fans of other teams not even sure why you would waist your time posting here agree or disagree idc the texans are making the right moves going forward so far and will be better than what you haters say
