Browns’ Davone Bess arrested for battery on an officer

Getty Images

Browns receiver Davone Bess was arrested for battery on a law enforcement officer at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida early this morning.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed on its website that Bess was arrested at the airport this morning and taken to the Broward County main jail.

Late in the 2013 season, reports surfaced that Bess was dealing with personal problems, and shortly after those reports surfaced, the Browns placed Bess on the reserve/non-football illness list. Bess has drawn attention twice recently for posting photos on social media that appeared to show marijuana. The Browns confirmed on Thursday that they are looking into the latest photo.

The 28-year-old Bess played his first five NFL seasons in Miami before he was traded to the Browns in 2013. He caught 42 passes for 362 yards and two touchdowns for the Browns last season.

Looks as if his NFL career has come to an end. That’s a shame. Hope he gets the help he needs and things work out for him in the end.

Is there a prerequisite to be a Browns receiver that you have to be part of the substance abuse program?

    Thank you.

He looks like such a nice young man. I’m sure that the police have confused him with some other criminal.

  13. big64d says: Jan 17, 2014 9:29 AM

Why would the horrible cops bother such a great member of the community. Its not Davone’s fault he’s just a product of his environment. Hide the fightin dogs the law man is coming!!!

Dude tweeted a picture of a blunt at 4:20am captioned “We da real dons!” and then deleted it. I have nothing against weed, but why would you, as a pro athlete, advertise your smoking hobby?

    Answer: you’re an idiot.

  25. emmac13 says: Jan 17, 2014 9:39 AM

I thought pot does’nt make you violent. hmmmm. Anyways no doubt this guy has some issues. He stunck it up all season. He missed the last 2-3 games. Then he shows up on mass media blazin. I think he has Ricky Williams disease.

  27. duped85 says: Jan 17, 2014 9:44 AM

I can’t believe that he had 14 drops this year. He had great hands when he was with the Fish. What did you do to him Browns?

  28. dumbpollack says: Jan 17, 2014 9:46 AM

Finally the Browns catch a break! That big exhale you hear is from Joe B and Mike Lombardi. They went way overboard on this bum and now can crawl out from under it!

“Best slot receiver of all time” according to Gruden on MNF when Bess was on the Fins…. what a joke.

  30. 69finfan says: Jan 17, 2014 9:52 AM

Dude looks baked and pissed off. I was upset when Miami traded him but now, not so much.

  31. bassplucker says: Jan 17, 2014 9:53 AM

He looks about 45 years old in that pic.

  32. chibios says: Jan 17, 2014 9:54 AM

I tell you what, as a Dolphin fan while he was here in Miami he was nothing but a model citizen. Met him at Best Buy once and was extremely nice. Inspiring how he came from Compton and had changed his life around. Was even an UDFA coming out of Hawaii and made a name for himself. Whatever he’s going through must be serious. I am very surprised how fast he is heading downhill.

Hope this kid can turn things around. Much love for you in Miami, Davone.

  33. browns627 says: Jan 17, 2014 9:57 AM

hello nfl???? this dude needs some serious help. the league creates these monsters by bowing to them, they need to get involved and help him some how… nfl constantly says they are a family.. well one of their sons is about to crash and burn

  34. bandzz says: Jan 17, 2014 9:58 AM

Not knowing what really happened, especially with the prevalence of officers abusing their powers, i don’t get how people can quickly jump on this young man as guilty. We don’t know ANYTHING. I’ve seen officers provoke a man into getting angry and then the officers arrest him for battery.

  35. markmanxp says: Jan 17, 2014 9:58 AM

  36. beardinals says: Jan 17, 2014 9:59 AM

  40. fryeways says: Jan 17, 2014 10:13 AM

Due process exists for a reason – we weren’t there and we don’t know what happened. He could have been the victim here for all we know.

Don’t just automatically assume someone is a dirtbag because they were arrested.

There’s a header at the top of this website titled “Police Blotter” that I never noticed before. In clicking on it there have been 20 arrests in the NFL since training camp began.

That should tell you all you need to know about this league we hold so sacred. No wonder why this great nation is slowly eroding.

  49. mayfieldroadboy says: Jan 17, 2014 10:27 AM

The last pic I saw concerning him was an energy drink in a can, a drink in a glass, a fatty-boom-batty, and some “jah” ready for the next roll. All seeming to enshrine the pic of Griselda Blanco. Bess doesn’t make it easy for anyone to have faith in his football abilities going forward.

Sad. But glad he’ll be gone from the Browns.

  50. hrmlss says: Jan 17, 2014 10:29 AM

  51. brownsdawg1984 says: Jan 17, 2014 10:30 AM

I can’t believe no one from the Browns had stepped in to help him. Dude was obviously going through something serious because his tweets for the last month have been borderline insane. Another Titus Young type situation in the making.

  56. fester73 says: Jan 17, 2014 11:05 AM

  57. valhallavictory says: Jan 17, 2014 11:21 AM

Hit the officer with his Starbucks and they call that assault. Wouldn’t hold up for anybody who wasn’t a police officer. Sack up. I’d like to see this security cam tape.

  61. clebrowns216 says: Jan 17, 2014 11:53 AM

Coffee, Footballs, at least he is consistent on and off the field.

  62. phinagain says: Jan 17, 2014 12:07 PM

I’m not sure what it was about the environment in Cleveland that was so bad for him. He had a down year, but for his sake (and yours, Cleveland fans), I hope he returns to form. When he was in Miami, he was one of the best slot receivers in the league. He caught the most impossible passes and was one of the most prolific pass catchers in the NFL, I believe only second to Wes Welker. And that was without a true deep threat to draw teams away from him. There is almost no one better at finding the soft spot in zone coverage than Bess.
Sad turn of events for the young man.

  64. laxcoach37 says: Jan 17, 2014 12:19 PM

I feel bad for Davone, he was a very reliable player for Miami, but I have to say… Where are all you arm chair GM’s that posted hate comments on the Phins for trading him for a 5th rounder? As much as I hated the now fired Jeff Ireland, he looked good on this one and must have known something. Brandon Gibson was a stud until he got injured taking over the Slot. Get help Mr. Bess!

Davone was nothing but class in Miami. He was a great member of the community and a positive role model.

I don’t know what happened to him in his personal life, but I wish him well. He’s obviously struggling with something. Get well soon, Davone.

  70. irkjames says: Jan 17, 2014 2:37 PM

From what I hear, Davone is a very good man.

He always received high praise from everyone in South Florida. I even remember one time he cut a radio interview short because he pulled over to help someone who had just gotten into a very bad car wreck.

The man was imprisoned right before heading to college for being in a car with people who had done something illegal. He fights out of that, plays ball in Hawaii, then goes undrafted.

He’s had quite a journey. For the most part, he’s really gotten passed the odds. I have a great deal of respect for Davone. He was great to my community.

I wish him the best. From what I’ve been told by people who have met him, he’s a very kind, personable guy.

  72. dynastyposeiden says: Jan 17, 2014 3:34 PM

I like what someone said about due process.. not sure what happened wasn’t there but judging from some of the idiotic comments on here that side with the owners in the long term health care lawsuit and between player/team negotiations , there is a huge amount of people that are jealous of NFL players. Surely most of those people never sacrificed as deeply as NFL players due in terms of training and preparation. They were likely third stringers that were cut from the JV not realizing all the time they spent playing madden or hanging out at the pool or beach could affect how far they could go in their athletic career .
you guys just go back to fawning over manning screeching omaha and selling anything that makes him a buck

  73. clesportsfan says: Jan 17, 2014 3:45 PM

Is that Davone Bess or Bubbles from The Wire?

  74. aldante66 says: Jan 17, 2014 3:47 PM

Sad that these guys get so strung out they can’t function anymore. I hope the cop he allegedly beat up is all right. I assume there were witnesses and video camera’s etc or THE POLICE WOULD NOT HAVE ARRESTED HIM FOR JUST BEING A FOOTBALL PLAYER.
No one said he is guilty of a dam thing but no one said he is innocent either.
