Wade Phillips says Redskins have hired Wes Phillips

Last year, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett called tight ends coach Wes Phillips his right-hand man because of all the things Phillips did for the team.

That’s going to leave a lot of work for others because it appears Phillips will now be coaching for an NFC East rival. Phillips interviewed to become the Redskins tight ends coach this week after the team promoted Sean McVay to offensive coordinator and now there’s word that he’s been hired for that post.

The word comes from both his father Wade, who originally hired his son in Dallas and tweeted Friday that the Redskins have made a “great hire,” and Mike Jones of the Washington Post.

The younger Phillips had been on Dallas’ staff since 2007, moving around various positions on the offensive side of the ball before settling with the tight ends in 2013. His departure leaves Garrett in need of both a new tight ends coach and a new right-hand man.

Kellen Winslow’s application for both jobs may already be in the mail.
