Ken Whisenhunt hires another one of his old assistants

Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt has turned to familiar faces when it comes to filling out his defensive coaching staff.

The defensive coordinator will be Ray Horton, who worked as the coordinator for Whisenhunt in Arizona as well, and the linebackers coach will be Lou Spanos, who worked with Whisenhunt when Whisenhunt was an assistant in Pittsburgh. They’ll be joined by secondary coach Sigismondo Cioffi, who uses Louie for professional purposes.

Cioffi was the defensive backs coach in Whisenhunt’s final two years in Arizona and then went with Horton to Cleveland for the 2013 season. He spent 14 years with the Bengals before moving to Arizona, experience Whisenhunt cited while discussion why Cioffi was the choice.

“Louie coached with me in Arizona and did an outstanding job,” Whisenhunt said in a statement. “He has a background with Marvin Lewis, who has a great defensive mind and been the leader of some of the league’s best defenses. In Arizona, he did really good work with Patrick Peterson and the rest of the db’s, and then went on to Cleveland to bring out the best in Joe Haden.”

The Titans retained assistant defensive backs coach Steve Brown when they let Brett Maxie go as the lead position coach after the season.
