Patriots sign six rookies to reserve/future deals

On the first day of New England’s offseason, the club signed seven members of its practice squad to reserve/future contracts.

Six of the signees were rookies: offensive lineman Braxston Cave (Notre Dame), offensive tackle Jordan Devey (Memphis), wide receiver Reggie Dunn (Utah), offensive lineman R.J. Mattes (N.C. State), wide receiver Sam McGuffie (Rice) and linebacker Taylor Reed (Southern Methodist).

The Patriots also signed first-year wideout Greg Orton (Purdue) to a reserve/future deal.

The Patriots’ reserve/future signings of 2013 panned out relatively well. Fullback James Develin started six games for New England, while wide receiver Andre Holmes and linebacker Jeff Tarpinian started multiple games for the Raiders and Texans, respectively.

Cave was supposed to be in camp with the Patriots before he got hurt. I’m very interested to see how he turns out. Mike Mayock had him as one of his top 5 centers at the Combine, and Wendell has got to go.

This is not aimed at NE, but what are the stats on how many reserve future signers ever get on a roster or play?

I’m interested in seeing what they do with McGuffie. Had a lot of fan fair when he was at UM and that died down when he transferred to Rice. They should resign Edelman and he could just be insurance or depth for camp.
