Eagles fill QB coach vacancy with Bill Musgrave

Bill Musgrave AP

Success led to other teams poaching their staff this offseason, and the Eagles have made a move to fill their vacancy.

According to Alex Marvez of FOX Sports, the Eagles have hired former Vikings offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave as quarterbacks coach.

He replaces Bill Lazor, who talked to the Lions before taking the offensive coordinator position in Miami.

Musgrave spent the previous three seasons with the Vikings, and had previously worked for the Falcons, Redskins, Jaguars, Panthers and Raiders. He was actually an offensive assistant with the Eagles in 1998.

He had a brief career as an NFL quarterback with the 49ers and Broncos, and he has a strong pedigree in the West Coast system.

Don’t the Packers need a QB coach? Someone to teach Aaron to throw a good pick 6?

    Dear Nick Foles,

    You have our deepest condolences.

It sucks to be an Eagles fan right about now. Skol Vikings!

I heard they put the entire employment contract on a tiny little index card…

  7. duece5 says: Jan 21, 2014 2:13 PM

    Dear Philly fans,

If you notice a shortage of 3×5 index cards, it is Bill Musgrave putting his finishing touches on his “offense”.

I truly am sorry for you.

We wish you the best, nonetheless…….at least he isn’t your OC.

Norv Turner is busy getting his playbook…..the 5″ binder, condensed to an extra large restaurant menu.

I don’t think this guy is as bad as everyone claims: remember, he was stuck with Christian Ponder.

  9. drunkinsconnie says: Jan 21, 2014 2:15 PM

He was that bad. Check out his OC history. He needs to stick to coaching QBs. I just wish he’d of taken Ponder with him.

Musgrave waited until half of the season was over until he started using Patterson. Unforgivable.

  12. diveleft says: Jan 21, 2014 2:23 PM

Eagle fans won’t have to worry about any team “poaching” their QB coach anymore, so that problem has been solved.

  13. reasonablemindsays says: Jan 21, 2014 2:27 PM

It was about this time last year when Browns fans were feeling sorry for us for landing Pat Shurmur.

  14. sdsmooth says: Jan 21, 2014 2:33 PM

Makes total sense. Musgrave did a marvelous job with Joe Webb, Christian Ponder and Josh Freeman.

  15. jbink2585 says: Jan 21, 2014 2:42 PM

Im not quite sure the deal its Chips kellys offense he calls plays, Foles is an intelligent QB Musgrave will not mess up much bc he wont be ask to do much. Also don’t take this wrong way but Ponder,Freeman,Cassel, Joe webb, etc I think its more Musgrave had no talent at the Qb position rather poor coaching, his previous stops hes done a nice job. Zimmer was a great higher though sincerely he desereved it, I hope it works out well kills me to see AP waste all his good years.

  16. tombstone7 says: Jan 21, 2014 2:46 PM

Musgrave is a former Duck from Oregon. ..he is highly intelligent and if he had decent QBs to work with, some of these comments would disappear…….he would be much better fit The Gambler Kelly!

  17. 23rdusernameused says: Jan 21, 2014 2:57 PM

yeah, I very very seriously doubt that it’s the fault of Musgrave that Ponder, Freeman and Cassel sucked!! I think they all sucked pretty bad before Bill ever met ‘em!!!

  18. walkers8484 says: Jan 21, 2014 2:58 PM

Expect Foles to regress this year. Musgrave is terrible. Bad hire

  19. therealstats says: Jan 21, 2014 3:04 PM

    Minnesota Vikings Passing Offense stats:
    2011-28th in the NFL
    2012-31st in the NFL
    2013-23rd in the NFL

Rushing Offense-4th, 2nd and 8th (thanks to AP)

    Total Offense-18th, 20th, 13th.

LIke the rest of the Vikings previous staff……………………Nice guy…………..No results

  20. jbink2585 says: Jan 21, 2014 3:58 PM

Vikings fans I truly hope you turn it around, but you cant come in here and preach numbers when, its a talent driven league, and your personell department hasn’t put talent at the Qb position for quite some time, can have Ap all you want put 8 in a box stop Ap and make a Qb beat you, but you haven’t had one. Coach can teach x’s and o’s, however, can not teach talent blame Musgrave all you want the Qb positions for you has been laughable for quite some time now.

  21. luvmnsports2012 says: Jan 21, 2014 4:03 PM

Eagle fans can say what they want but what it comes down to is bill was terrible for us and he WILL be terrible for eagles as well! Still the same guy just different team! Good luck!! #musgraveforpresidentlolololol

  22. greymares says: Jan 21, 2014 4:06 PM

you guys seem to be under the impression that a QB coach, coaches Quarterbacks. lol.

  23. gdeli says: Jan 21, 2014 4:16 PM

goodbye and good riddance! loser. why brainiac spielman picked him up after the falcons dumped his ass baffles me. 4 down , now rick, ponder cassel need to go! singletary, ha

  24. jbink2585 says: Jan 21, 2014 4:27 PM

Look at Musgrave numbers when he had talent Buerline, Burnell, Matt ryan etc pretty solid #s. However when you give him trash like Leftwich, Garrard, Harrington, Redman, Vick, Ponder, Webb, Cassel, and Freeman even the best QB coach cant make that work. Perfect example of your shortsited point of you Eagles fans would know we ran Sean Mcdermont outa town as our DC, how did that Panthers Defense Look this year that Mcdermont runs?# TALENT WINS# VIKES HAVENT HAD QB SINCE FAVRE

  25. stellarperformance says: Jan 21, 2014 5:24 PM

He will probably flourish now that he finally escaped Minnesota. What a black hole that place has become.

At least have tall buildings. First things first.

  26. oldbyrd says: Jan 21, 2014 5:34 PM

    GREAT CHOICE

  27. TD Hawk says: Jan 21, 2014 6:13 PM

And like Lazor, he also coached at UVA. In fact, Lazor might’ve replaced if my memory is correct.

  28. jucam1 says: Jan 21, 2014 8:21 PM

I’m sorry Minny fans, but this is a real and competitive franchise with a great coach and a good to hopefully someday great QB. The difference for Musgrave is that he won’t have to deal with awful, let me repeat, AWFUL QBs, and regardless, he found a way to show Matt Cassel how to beat a hot team like ours!.. So take your sad, sad, pathetic whining somewhere else!… We are all good with our own issues and know we have at least a legit QB playing under our genius of an HC. The QB coach will be a minimal part of what we do. Maybe, we’ll teach him something, God knows nobody learns anything in Minny.

gumbogumbo says: Chip needs a guy named Bill to coach his quarterbacks apparently
    ————————
That’s probably just coincidence. I think it’s really that they both fit the Bill.

  30. thereyougo2 says: Jan 21, 2014 10:40 PM

QB coach hired to watch replays and advise Chip when to throw the red flag.

  31. digrojones says: Jan 22, 2014 3:21 PM

Vikes fans here seem to think he is going to be calling the plays for the Birds, or that we are going to redesign our offense to be more like the ones he has been the OC for. HE IS THE QBS COACH!! His role is to help develop Foles and add insight.. he has plenty of experience, good and bad.

Chip will be just fine. In fact, with a whole season under his and his team’s belt and with more players hand-picked to play in his system, the Eagles will be even better Offensively (and Defensively) than last year.
