The Steelers are reportedly adding a former head coach, Hall of Fame offensive guard and Pennsylvania native to coach their offensive line.

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, the Steelers are adding ex-Titans head coach Mike Munchak as offensive line coach.

Munchak, 53, led the Titans to a 22-26 record in three seasons as head coach before being let go in January. He interviewed with Pittsburgh last week.

A Scranton, Pennsylvania native, Munchak played collegiately at Penn State. He was a nine-time Pro Bowler with the Houston Oilers in 12 seasons (1982-1993) and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001. He coached the Oilers/Titans offensive linemen for 14 seasons (1997-2010).

Munchak replaces Jack Bicknell Jr., with whom the Steelers parted ways after the 2013 season.

Great move by the Steelers. Munchak will help solidify this line. He will be an excellent mentor for the steelers young line. Somewhere Le’veon Bell is doing backflips about this hire.

Good hire. He’ll help that OL big time.

Best free agent pick up in years..probably their last

  16. bst3975 says: Jan 23, 2014 12:41 AM

He’s probably a great hire. But it would be better for them if he could un-retire and play.

An excellent early move in what should be a very interesting offseason. Now let’s see if he can get anything outta Mike Adams… That’s the real test.

And there you have your mid-season replacement for Tomlin after the Steelers continue to crumble in 2014

  19. steelchampions says: Jan 23, 2014 1:37 AM

This sounds like a really good hire. Hopefully it turns the tide on how the o-line has performed over the last few seasons.

GREAT hire by the Steelers! Munchak should be able to help the team’s O-line.

Tomlin now has two former head coaches working for him. Perhaps they can teach him how to manage the game clock!

I love this hire. Munch was legendary at Penn State and as an NFL Hall of Famer – and he’s known for imparting both wisdom, insight and an emphasis on physical football. Really digging this.

Very good hire for the steelers. He has the credentials.

This should be a great addition to the Steelers O.

Excellent! An offensive lineman has to be doubly good to get into the hall because he’s not playing a glory position. This guy understands the thousand little things it takes to excel in the trenches, and he knows how to teach them. Great start to our off season!

  25. wackoflaccoisoverpaid says: Jan 23, 2014 2:43 PM

That gives us now 4 Head coaches on our Staff and 2 hall of famers. Yes he is going to help big time. But what a lot of people aren’t pointing out? He ran the zone scheme at Tennessee. And what have the Steelers ran With Haley ? The zone ! So, if anyone who watched the Steelers in the Second half this past season . The offense and Haley are finally on the same page. Now you Have a coach that can make this young line better . And teach them how to properly run the zone scheme. Perfect fit . Le’Veon is really going to gain a lot from this. If he stays 100% next season ? He’s going to have a big year. Sadly are best free agent signing in a while is an O line coach . LOL!!!!

    Super Hire! Good luck Mike

  27. texassteelerfan says: Jan 23, 2014 3:40 PM

I hope he does better as an O-line coach than a Head Coach. 22-26 is not exactly a glowing record! It’s one thing to be a great player and another thing to be a great coach. I’m still not convinced. I’m not sold on Haley yet either.

  28. wikipediasaidso says: Jan 23, 2014 4:39 PM

Munchak was always well regarded by the Titans and fans as an effective position coach. Maybe the head coaching thing didn’t work out as well, but it doesn’t cancel out what he did before as OL coach. (Also a legitimately good guy — all class.)

Coaches do still need decent raw material to work with, though. Steelers could probably still use a little more of that to fortify the OL, too.

  30. jrs45 says: Jan 23, 2014 10:41 PM

Yes a guy who went 22-26 as a coach and went to Don’tDropTheSoap University wooohooo!

  31. jrs45 says: Jan 23, 2014 10:45 PM

22-26 record and played with Sandusky lol pass!

  32. njsteeler says: Jan 25, 2014 9:39 AM

Someone called the o-line horrid. The second half of the season that line was one of the best performing units on the team. Good hire, and another positive going into next year. Can’t wait for the draft.
