Ted Thompson sticking to usual plan this offseason

The Packers have signed free agents from outside the organization infrequently under General Manager Ted Thompson and it doesn’t sound like there’s going to be much change this offseason.

While Thompson admits he “possibly” botched the handling of the backup quarterback spot, leaving the Packers rudderless in the immediate aftermath of the Aaron Rodgers collarbone injury, he was otherwise pleased with the way that the team reacted in the face of injuries during the 2013 season. As he a result, he’s not in any greater hurry to add veterans to the roster than he’s been in the past.

“If an opportunity presents itself and it helps us be better, then yes,” Thompson said, via Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “But I think doing it for the sake of doing it is a waste of time and energy. If we get the opportunity, if it presents itself and makes sense for the club with the way we put things together, we’re going to do it. We’ve done it in the past. We try to do it selectively.”

The Packers have plenty of their own free agents to sift through, including cornerback Sam Shields, wide receiver James Jones and defensive tackle B.J. Raji, and there doesn’t figure to be much money to spend on free agents from the outside even if there were a great desire to do so.
