The salary cap penalties imposed on the Redskins a couple of years ago have left the team without much ability to spend during free agency.

Those penalties are out of the way, however, and this offseason brings with it the possibility of more activity for a team that’s usually been busy in the offseason since Dan Snyder bought the team. During an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen all but promised that the team would be moving at a brisk pace once free agency gets underway.

“We’ll have some room,” Allen said, via the Washington Post. “We’re gonna have some room to do some things. But we have some players who are free agents, and we’re going to talk to them first, to try to retain them. But we have the ability to maneuver around, and we’ll be active in free agency.”

Linebacker Brian Orakpo, cornerback DeAngelo Hall and linebacker Perry Riley are a few of the in-house free agents that the Redskins will have to sort out, but there’s enough cap space to do things in a variety of ways which should make the Redskins one of the more interesting teams to watch when the action starts in March.
