Niners considered Mangini for move to quarterbacks coach

While it appears that, for the third straight year, 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman won’t be leaving for a head coaching job elsewhere, the team has been planning for his departure.

According to Matt Maiocco of, coach Jim Harbaugh considered moving quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst to offensive coordinator and offensive consultant Eric Mangini to quarterbacks coach, if Roman were to leave.

With Roman likely staying, Mangini apparently will still be moving.  Per Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, Mangini will move from consultant to position coach in 2014.

Despite Mangini’s experience as a defensive coach before becoming head coach of the Jets and Browns, the willingness of Harbaugh to consider making Mangini quarterbacks coach means that Mangini could end up on either side of the ball.

Please give Mangini as much responsibility and influence over the team as possible.

My guess is that he still wants to be a head coach and therefore learn the offensive side of the ball from position coach up. I would guess he becomes new Tight Ends coach since Vernon Davis disappeared in the playoffs

    Please Greg Roman leave….

how do you have a QB run for 130 yards through 3 quarters (50 via designed runs) and ground him in the 4th?

Roman consistently abandons what has worked throughout a game due to perceived adjustments.

I speak for the majority of Niners fans hoping he hits the road.

Maybe I’m just stupid, but moving from offensive consultant to quarterbacks coach sounds like a demotion to me.

(Oh, and I’ve been called an offensive consultant, but normally people just call me an offensive human being.)

Still surprised Mangini wasn’t seriously considered for any of the 15 or so HC jobs in the last two years. Doesn’t he have a winning record?

Too late. Season’s over. Maybe he can show Kapernick how to properly wear a baseball cap. He (Kapernick) looked like a seventh grader at his post-game conference.

Kaepernick showed a lot of class after they lost. Told the other QB to get himself a ring. Shut yo face kook!
