Packers could block Alex Van Pelt from moving on

The Packers have lost one long-time offensive assistant this offseason, but they don’t have to lose another if they choose.

According to Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the Packers could block a team from trying to hire running backs coach Alex Van Pelt since he remains under contract through 2014.

Quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo, whose contract had expired, was able to jump to the Giants as offensive coordinator.

There have been reports linking Van Pelt as a possibility to work for Mike Pettine if he gets the Browns head coaching job.

But Van Pelt could also shift over to his natural position as well. The former Bills quarterback makes the most sense to replace McAdoo, so the Packers may be inclined to prevent his moving on.

Maybe a little turnover in our coaching staff could liven things up. I think there is more the Greene leaving than they origionaly let on.

Is this correct? Was always under the impression, NFL rules permitted you to leave for a promotion. Teams can block a lateral move.

And Buffalo couldn’t do this with Pettine?

    What a joke.

You cannot block a coach from leaving for a head coaching job (or a personnel guy from leaving for a “final say” GM job). But, if under contract, you can block other coaching moves–even if they are promotions. Last year, Green Bay blocked McAdoo from a chance to leave. This year, his contract expired so he was able to become a coordinator.

Well maybe now their offense can really do better. Now have to work on the defense. To me both awful!
