Cardinals promote Terry McDonough to V.P. of player personnel

Jason Licht held his first press conference as the general manager of the Buccaneers on Thursday while the Cardinals were using the day to promote Licht’s replacement.

The team announced that Terry McDonough will be the new vice president of player personnel where he will work closely with General Manager Steve Keim. McDonough spent four years as the director of player personnel with the Jaguars before joining the Cardinals as a scout last year. He had extensive experience as a scout before taking the front office job in Jacksonville and got a chance to scout Keim when Keim was still in college.

While he promises not to be a “yes” man in his new role, McDonough said scouting Keim left him with a clear idea about just how far to push any disagreements with his boss.

“He is the only player I ever referred to as a street fighter,” McDonough said, via the team’s website. “I know he walks around Phoenix with a big smile but I watched him play at N.C. State and I promise you one thing: There will be no physical contact between me and him.”

With the promotion, the McDonough family adds to their sway in the Arizona sports world as Terry’s brother Ryan is the general manager of the Phoenix Suns. Sports run in the family as another brother, Sean, is a broadcaster for CBS and their late father Will was a fixture in the pages of the Boston Globe and contributor to NBC’s NFL coverage.
