Cowboys want DeMarcus Ware practicing more in 2014

Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Ware missed the first three games of his NFL career during the 2013 season as a quadriceps injury forced him out of the lineup.

That’s hardly the first injury Ware has suffered, though. He’s picked up numerous aches and pains over the years, causing him to miss practice time as the team made sure he was ready for Sundays. Coach Jason Garrett appreciates the need to keep Ware healthy for games, but said that the loss of practice time has hurt Ware on the field.

“He’s missed a lot of practice time over the last couple of years because of all these injuries, and that’s something that really can impact a player, even a player of his caliber. You need to practice,” Garrett said, via Carlos Mendez of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “We’ve got to get him to the point where he’s healthy and he can practice and he can get himself ready to play the way he’s capable of playing.”

Ware, who turns 32 this summer, had six sacks in 2013, the lowest total of his career and the first time he’s averaged less than half a sack per game in his Cowboys career. His contract is set to pay him $32 million over the next two years and the Cowboys will need to get more from Ware to justify that payout even if they wind up restructuring it to help their cap situation in the near term.

    Maybe Dallas should focus on getting more talent on the defensive side instead of being reliant on one guy’s health..

    But will Jerry bone up more on being a better GM? Will he study film on players available for the draft, trade and free agency? Will he study football finance and how to structure more effective player and coach contracts with better incentives? Will he run a better front office?

    Jerry, it’s like you’ve stuck a knife in my gut and just keep turning it!

    Cowboys are going to stink until Jerry gives up the keys.

    This is another contract that will haunt the team. Ware’s best years are behind him. He’ll be 33 next season. How many 33 year old pass rushers are out there and then how many will make that kind of money. Wouldn’t be surprised if Ware has a mediocre season he is a cap casualty in 2015.

    Let’s face it, Ware’s best years are behind him. That, combined with Romo’s back doesn’t bode well for the short term future of the Cowboy organization.

    “Practice?!? We’re talking about practice?”

    Btw Garrrrrrett if they have overuse injuries them miiiiight not need more practice. Hime being hurt has affected his time on the field.

    @deprado1

    Robert Mathis is the same age as Ware. He led the league in sacks this year. Jared Allen is one year younger than Ware and is still a feared DE.

    Those two are split second just off the top of my head.
