No big wave riding for Greg Hardy at Pro Bowl

Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy hasn’t always used sound judgment when it comes from moving from place to place.

But he’s smart enough to stay out of the big waves of Hawaii this week at the Pro Bowl.

“I don’t play around like that,” Hardy joked, via Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer. “Not before money time.”

As a pending free agent coming off a 15-sack season, Hardy stands to cash in this offseason one way or another.

The Panthers might elect to use the franchise tag on him, and he’s said in the past he’s OK with that. He’s also said he will and will not be offering hometown discounts, so it’s hard to tell where he actually stands on the topic. The Panthers are still digging out of a salary cap hole, so they have to make decisions beyond the immediate.

“It’s a waiting process. They’ve got to get the budget right,” Hardy said. “It’s a reality of football. It’s a reality of business. They’ve got the ball in their court right now. If that’s what they choose to do, nothing but respect and love.

“Carolina’s my home. But I’ve got to go back to work. I’d rather be here if I can. But if not, it’s just business.”

The numbers are going to be big regardless, assuming Hardy keeps his word and stays out of any body-surfing injuries or the like.

Hawaii is seeing 50ft swells this week. They canceled a professional surfing charity tourney. I don’t think many players will be in the surf.

Tampa is waiting to offer him the bank. I think he ends up back in Carolina one way or another.

Kellen Winslow Jr and Big Ben disapprove of this decision and think he should immediately get out on those big waves.

Surfing for the first time in any kind of waves can be a very humbling experience, even for experienced athletes. The amount of balance it takes is unreal.

Big-wave surfing without any prior experience would be cataclysmically stupid.

Why is it every year every free agent there are always some fools from the redskin and raider fan bases that think they’re going to sign everyone….wait it out fools.

I think he’ll stay in Carolina, Gettleman really wants to keep the core guys intact, even though they aren’t exactly throwing money at him I just feel like him and Mike Mitchell are the priority. Although, that makes it hard to keep Jordan Gross unless he comes back on the cheap. I’d hate to see him go, but I’d love to see the Panthers win more…
