Chris Johnson to have surgery for torn meniscus

Titans running back Chris Johnson will have surgery this week for a torn meniscus.

Johnson told Jim Wyatt ‏of the Tennessean that the procedure is “minor” and will repair an issue that he played through for almost all of the 2013 season.

“It’s nothing major. A lot of people don’t know I been playing with it since week 3 of the season,” Johnson told Wyatt.

Johnson started all 16 games but averaged a career-low 3.9 yards a carry last season. Based on that disappointing season, and his 2014 salary of $8 million, the Titans are expected to ask Johnson to take a pay cut, and release him if he refuses. Jason La Canfora of CBS reports that Johnson isn’t inclined to take a pay cut and will therefore almost certainly get cut.

That would make Johnson one of the most interesting free agents in the NFL this year. It’s highly unlikely that he’ll make the kind of money that he’s been making the last three years, and if teams believe that 3.9 yards per carry average is an indication that Johnson is in decline, he’s not going to make anything even close to that. On the other hand, all it takes is one team to think Johnson still has a lot left at age 28, and he could earn himself another big contract. Probably somewhere other than Tennessee.

  1. He has plenty of gas left in the tank, so maybe he’ll be like Randy Moss and start playing with passion and discipline at the end of his career. If so, too bad we didn’t experience him being the full package at Tennessee. Such a waste of stellar talent.

  2. His days of a big contract are over. I can see some team giving him a one year deal at a bargain price around $3 million.

  3. This is Reggie Bush 2.0, IMO. He will finally get onto an offense with a legit QB and explode back into fantasy in a big way possible. He is way better than Steven Jackson at this point, would be very interesting to see him in that offense. I’m a Redskin fan, we have the best butler in football, so no need, but if we were I would be at least listening. I would say he is worth exactly the contract Reggie got, whatever that was.

[Cue long pause with sound of crickets.]

Um … “legit QBs” like Vince Young and his backup Kerry Collins? You know … the QBs Chris Johnson had during his three strong seasons. The latest QBs had nothing to do with CJ not being a team player or taking plays off.

  5. He is gonna go to Miami. Watch.

And I thought it looked he was running lame all year… Thought maybe it was just his lame effort… apparently it was a torn meniscus AND his lame effort.

  6. 4-6 WEEKS yeah I had two repairs mind you im an old fart but it took 11 months before I felt normal. If they just shaved it off and cut out the tissue or did the stitch the tissue together… big difference in recovery.

  7. Selfish player. I have a torn meniscus. Going to fix it in feb. Two incisions, have to be off my feet for two days, and pretty much fully healed in 2 weeks. I have some sort of discomfort in that knee almost all day long, I cant even imagine planting and cutting on it. He should have sat himself and be back in three weeks. Would never want that player on my team. He single handedly screwed the Titans.

  8. @greggfletch1– I can single handedly screw someone too, but that won’t mean I’m the only one doing it… think about that…

  9. So the Titans are going to offer him a pay cut. Here’s what’s going to happen:

    1. The Titans will offer him a pay cut from $8 million to about $5 million.
    2. Chris Johnson will refuse.
    3. The Titans will cut Chris Johnson.
    4. Chris Johnson will hunt for a new team. He’ll hem and haw and whine that he’s being undervalued but then he’ll sign for about $2.5 million somewhere and be a good “role player.”

See James Harrison and about every other aging free agent for examples of this.

  10. Sorry for week 16 they reported a knee injury for Johnson, that was the only week after 3 that he was on the report.
