Indoor practices could be the norm for outdoor Super Bowl

Long before the game rolls around, the weather in New Jersey will have certainly impacted preparations for the Super Bowl.

Both coaches expressed concerns last night about snow and icy practice fields, which could force them to prepare indoors for an outdoor game.

“We’ll look at the fields and test the fields, and we brought our grounds crew people,” Broncos coach John Fox said, via Dan Garziano of “I understand the indoor facility is very much like ours, except their field house is completed, which is a big difference. So we may or may not go in there. I’d prefer grass. It saves out players’ legs. But if need be, we’ll go indoors or on their synthetic surface.”

The Broncos are practicing at the Jets facility in Florham Park, while the Seahawks are using the Giants facility in East Rutherford.

“We haven’t had a chance to get over there yet, but we understand there’s snow on the fields and they’re frozen and we likely could be inside for most of the week,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said.

Today’s going to be relatively mild, with highs in the upper 30s. But the chill is coming back Tuesday, with a forecast high in the high teens.

“I think, in order to be a championship football team, we’ve got to be weatherproof,” Fox said.

But practicing indoors might still be the most practical idea, making sure everyone makes it to game day.

  1. Yeah, don’t want to have a Reggie Bush slip-up situation like they did during the snow bowl earlier in the year, that’s for sure.

  2. Another reason why playing the game in a cold-weather city is stupid. The game will be played outdoors, on grass, but the teams might have to practice indoors on synthetic turf because outdoor practice fields are frozen. Not good.

  3. Damn NFL. Refuse to have a SB here in San Diego – because the stadium does not have ‘enough sky boxes’ for corporate clients … then is fine having it in an open stadium where the game will not be about ability but about slipping and sliding. NOT GOOD for your image, NFL!
