Obviously emboldened by this week’s cold-weather Super Bowl, a place even colder wants to get into the mix.
The Vikings and Minnesota governor Mark Dayton announced a bid to pursue Super Bowl LII in 2018.
“The Super Bowl is the most watched annual event in the world. In addition to game attendees, it brings over 100,000 people to the host community for a weeklong celebration,” the governor said in a release. “Hosting the Super Bowl would bring enormous economic benefits to many Minnesota businesses, as well as provide a terrific opportunity to again showcase Minnesota to the world.”

The old new-stadium carrot has worked in other places, and the Twin Cities have hosted the Super Bowl before (XXVI, in 1992).
This was part of the plan all along, and the formal bid will be made in the spring. The Vikings plan to open their new stadium in 2016.
By which time everyone in New York for this one should be properly thawed.
