APLast week, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones indicated that major changes wouldn’t be made on either side of the ball in 2014.
This week, Jones made major changes.
The team has announced that, as expected, Scott Linehan has been hired both to serve as passing coordinator and to call the offensive plays in 2014.
As not expected, the team has announced that Rod Marinelli will become the defensive coordinator, with Monte Kiffin promoted/shifted/whatever to the position of assistant head coach/defense.
“Our responsibility is to bring quality people into our organization and find the best fit for them. That applies to players, and it applies to coaches,” coach Jason Garrett said. “Rod Marinelli’s production in terms of creating turnovers and changing field position as a defensive coordinator is well documented. Monte Kiffin’s overall knowledge and understanding of this defensive scheme will be put to use in mentoring all of the players and coaches on the defensive side of the ball. Monte was brought here to direct a transition in philosophy to the 4-3 scheme, and he will continue to oversee the development of our defense in this scheme.”
Garrett also addressed the addition of Linehan and the stripping of the play-calling duties from Callahan.
“The opportunity to add someone of Scott Linehan’s expertise and experience will benefit our offensive unit, and we believe the combination of him and Bill Callahan working closely together will give us a great chance to build upon the strides we made offensively last year,” Garrett said.
Linehan’s arrival apparently won’t mean the departure of offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Bill Callahan. Per Ed Werder of ESPN, the Cowboys are keeping Callahan because he’d become the interim head coach, if Garrett is fired during the 2014 season.
Yep. Everything is normal and fully functional with the Cowboys.
Jerry Jones needs to fire Jerry Jones. My gosh he needs to park his ego and start learning that owning a team and “playing” with your team does not equal Super Bowl wins.
I understand making a change on the defensive side…but adding another playcaller to the offense is probably going to totally complicate things. It is subtraction by addition.
lol – How bout those Cowboys!
Jerry forgot another side-the front office side.
Still no changes at GM though….(prob the 1000% comment like that). Anyway keep up the good work Jurrah!
-signed Eagles and NFC East fans
Come on Jerry Jones time to give it up you aren’t up to speed with how the NFL works nowadays, hire a GM let him make all the football decisions because its completely obvious that you have failed at it. Continue doing what you are doing and you will continue to be a laughingstock of the NFL and be a sub par team yr in and yr out
Give Jerry the headset already.
Moving furniture.
Wow – I bet Garrett loves that, they are keeping someone because he would replace you if you get fired, not because of his ability, because I mean they took his responsibility away from him.
I can see them all enjoying a screening of The Wizard of Oz in Jerry’s mansion with popcorn and Hawaiian Punch.
Give Jerrah a break. It’s not like Dave Campos, Chan Gaileys & Barry Switzers grow on trees!
Is this a football team or a jobs program? Geez. Jerry isn’t going to know who to point the finger at.
This team is so messed up.. Just wow.. Im speechless….
Give me $4 billion and I’ll fix Dallas’ woes. I’ll bring in Bill Cowher as coach, pay him $10 mil/year and hire Tom Donahue as GM. Cowboys would have 3-5 more SB wins during the next decade.
Sounds like they will be dealing with a staph, er staff infection in Dallas soon.
Love when Jerrah uses reverse psychology. Next thing he will say is that the Cowboys will have a winning season.
And I tought Miami’s front office was a mess…
w-what?
2 former Lions coaches in charge. As a Lions fan all I can say is that I feel sorry for Cowboy fans.
My owner gets a bad rap when compared to Jerry Jones… He gives no authority to his leaders. They are puppets tied to the puppeteer’s strings… As Dan Snyder I believe has learned… Organization & structure must come from the top down. You cannot have your GM undermine the head coach’s authority by not allowing him to manage his staff. Sure at the end of the season, if changes are necessary, private conversations should lead to the head coach making a change. It has been proven over & over that players don’t perform to the highest of their ability if their coach has no authority. Jason Garrett is a door mat.
Ha ha ha. Confused? So are the players!
I’m not a fan of this team but man are they entertaining
SNAFU
Unfortunately the one move they need to make, get a GM, is again not in the plans.
Im hearing carnival music again
Jerry’s been smoking a super bowl…
That’s called cutting off your balls and making you a dead man walking.
Skeletor style!
What a cluster****.
yawn….another 8-8 season.
Light the fuse and stand back.
………BOOM……..
So many lackluster cooks in one mess of a kitchen. If Gordon Ramsay were a NFL fan, his head would explode.
Same ole Cowboys.
Welcome to the MOSH PIT.
Oh my. Drop Garrett for Callahan? Fire Jerry.
Welcome to Jerry’s world a place that he can only call home!
Jerry Jones’ latest management philosophy: “Let’s keep all the coaches on their toes by having them constantly looking over their shoulders at the next guy.”
What could possibly go wrong?
HAHAHA
Jason Garrett’s title was also changed to Head Assistant Coach. Jerry Jones’ title was adjusted to Owner/President/General Manager/Head Coach.
How ’bout them Cowboys!
Marinelli will do a good job as DC. I’m not sure how all those coaches on offense will work out but I’m sure Jerry has it all under control. (As I roll my eyes)
Absolutely nothing wrong with succession planning 😉
Dave
How many consultants does it take to compensate for the lack of a GM?
Bill Callahan called his players stupid (Oakland), called Sooner fans F’ing hillbillies (Nebraska), and will probably blow up in some manner in Dallas.
Wow…… so every position coach has someone “assisting/waiting to take their job” behind them.
Sounds right……..
Cowboys fan for life but I’m having trouble keeping up with job descriptions.
20 coaches zero common sense
Actually, the move with Marinelli really isn’t a bad move. It is incredibly futile though.
Just sell the team JJ, just sell it.
Wow. I know the Browns have their issues. But is this team for real? Where is Jimmy Johnson when you need him !
What a dumpster fire of an organization.
Why would you not just send Kiffin packing? The guy is so far past his prime with his archaic scheme it’s unbelievable.
Once the new football year begins . . the Cowboys will be mathematically eliminated from any post-season play.
the cowboys don’t have a coaching problem, they have a talent problem.
That’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen
Fun in “dysfunction”, eh?
Way way way too many cooks in the kitchen!
I was happy both those clowns got fired and kicked off my Lions. Feel bad for you Dallas.
What a mess and a joke in Dallas.!!!
So Linehan will tell Garrett to tell Romo the play that Jerry wants to call.
Jerry makes you want to cry if you’re a Cowboys fan and smile if you’re not. What a joke of an owner.
Skeletor makes changes on both sides of the ball.
Three play callers on offense, and two guys coordinating the defense …
Potential problems? … Nah – what could go wrong here?
Lose 3 in a row, and it’s a finger pointing contest.
This team is about as dysfunctional as greensbay!
As the World Turns is alive and well in the world created by Jerry Jones. Jerry, you have won nothing since Jimmy left. Barry’s Superbowl win does not count for you, because that was won with Jimmy’s boys. Your team, organization, has been wallowing in mediocrity for years. Short of selling the team, nothing will improve the Cowboys until you get a clue that you are terrible at managing a football organization.
This team is clufu’d.
Like it. Had to be done. Best coaching changes possible without changing the head coach. Haters …….go ahead. But you know they got better with these moves.
Why not just fire Kiffin then? I actually like this move to give Marinelli the D-coordinator job, simply due to the job he did with the D-line last season, but Kiffin is an absolutely useless part of the coaching staff at this point.
An NFL head coach will tell you that bull poop is good for you. He may not tell you that it doesn’t taste good. He won’t tell you where it comes from.
Jason Garrett is becoming a master of the cultivation of bull poop. Let’s hope it doesn’t bury him.
hahahaaaa….
I hope Jerry Jones lives till he’s 120!
Smart move promoting Marinelli before Lovie comes calling. As for your offense – I truly believe Jerry would be smart to hire, oh, let’s say another 47 coaches to help call plays. Idiots.
May Jerry Jones live to be 200 years old!
Are they changing the gm?
“Yep. Everything is normal and fully functional with the Cowboys.”
Exactly right on. Now if we could find someone to be the GM, and HC, those would be significant improvements.
Stupidity rules in Valley Ranch
Cowboys are screwed up.
Nothing will change far as winning until Jerry Jones make the change at the top and sit his but down and hire somebody who knows what they are doing.
Who in their right mind would take a job with this organization? Even if you win, Jerry will take all the credit.
Does anyone know if Tom Landry ever dabbled in witchcraft before he passed?
Cowboys are cursed…..
And I’m a Redskins fan
I bet they are 5 – 10 next year.
Only in Jerry’s world does a defensive coordinator take the defense to the bottom of the NFL and then get promoted over the new coordinator.
Wow. Now I guess there will be a new head coach and Jason Garret will become head coach /owner liaison or some other made up title.
Why not just fire Kiffin and Callahan and replace them with Marinelli and Linehan? Or better yet, why not just hire a competent head coach and let him bring in his own coaches and stay out of the way?
Jerry Jones has officially lost his mind.
Jerry Jones is an absolute ass-clown.
A Texas – sized clown show.
So let me make sure I got this right. Jason Garrett the headless coach + Scott Limehan + Callahan + Romo ÷ jerry Jones runs the offense? Nope not confusing at all. Then there’s two defensive coordinators
Only in Jerry’s world.
Too many chiefs and not enough Indi… uhh, cowboys?
Wow
thats fine work JJ
JJ had to do something. Those deck chairs on the Titanic weren’t going to rearrange themselves.
I’m reminded of that saying “too many cooks spoil the broth’….seems like they’re just setting themselves up for more internal conflict.
How long before some team has a larger coaching roster than playing roster?
It’s cute how they let little Jason talk to the media as if he had any say in this situation to begin with. The only constant with the dreadful Cowboys franchise over the past 20 years has been Jerry himself. When will his ego shrink to the extent that it allows him see that he may, in fact, be the problem?…Unfortunately, I am not sure it will ever happen.
God dammit Jerry….
Yeah, that Jerry Jones runs a tight ship.
Re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic….
What….in…the…hell…..is a passing coordinator.
Jerry Jones’ running of this team is a big ole soup sandwich. Longtime Cowboy fan……I’m out.
Fire ginger head coach too……
Foolishly Unbelievable.
Huge vote of Non-confidence in Garrett… Whole thing becoming a laughing stock.
Lol.
Nothing will change in terms of what Jerruh perceives as improvements.
What’s obvious to most, is oblivious to him.
Quite the Entertainer ‘Ol Jerr.
The Dallas Cowboys are the most profitable team in the NFL despite 18 years of frustrating blind faith. Jerry IS the NFL’s best paid / compensated GM in the NFL despite 18 yrs. of total incompetence. Jerry IS the face of the Dallas Cowboys and constantly finds ways to step in front of a camera and microphone… and orgasmic event for JJ. Why then, would he want to make changes?
Imagine if he ate enough Humble pie to hire a GM
Trainwreck
I am not a fan of Dallas cowboys so I checked on the official site on how any points cowboys averaged last season. It was 27.5 per game, 5th best in the league. That is pretty good. If they are trying for 1 or 2 ranking then they need Payton Manning, Tom Brady or Rogers as a QB.
There defense was bad , the opponents converted more 3rd downs and had more rushing yards than the offense.
I think jones doesn’t want to look bad that’s why he is keeping kiffin and Callahan but both should go. There will be too much office politics which will cause distraction. Every one will be focusing on saving their job instead of greater good of the team .
Lol! The only good thing about being a Redskins fan these days is getting to laugh at the Cowboys!
What a muddy mess….
The Cowboys can play musical coaches and coordinators all they want. The fact is, they are not going to get any farther until two things happen. First, Jerry Jones needs to swallow some of his ego and hire a general manager. Second, they need to look beyond Romo who has taken them as far as his skills will allow.
Jurrah’s got a contingency plan in place to replace the replacements. Splendid! This will come in handy when they crash into each other’s backs on the sideline during game time when they’re each shouting their favorite play/defense to be run.
This could quickly elevate to the level of Pops Ryan and Kevin Gilbride on the sideline. The NFL hasn’t seen that kind of entertainment in years.
I’ll get my popcorn ready.
Oh, geez, Jerrah. Are you TRYING to create dysfunction?
……and still the Cowboys will stay mediocre.
Wow ( jaw dropped type). Quite a lot of cooks in that kitchen! Never doubt Jerry’s ability to out stupid himself….
Could the meeting room get more crowded?
::attempts to slam round object in square peg × forever::
Callahan has every right, & should be offended, and I’ve never heard of 2 OC at the same time, ever! I never comment on things Cowboys, but this is extremely noticeable! Amazing!
Jerry Jones…the Gift that keeps on giving!
the NFC factory of sadness
The annual JJ grasping at straws to find something that will work. It won’t JJ. The only thing that will work is you hiring a GM and letting them run the team without you in the mix. THAT will work. Until then you will have losing seasons, or 500, at best.
What kind of s*#t show is Jerry running in Dallas?
Browns fans say,”Thanks Jerry” for keeping Callahan in Dallas. We didn’t want him coming to Cleveland.
I hate to say this but I feel bad for just about everyone on that coaching staff except Kiffin and Linehan.
Garrett might as well step back, get a lawn chair and watch the reality show going on in front of him.
He has no real power and only get’s trotted out to handle media duties. Callahan surely would rather be OC somewhere else because he’s not allowed to coordinate here and is also left twisting in the wind just so jerry can have an interim head coach who doesn’t want to be there?
Jerry just keeps creating new positions for everyone just to avoid admitting he keeps screwing things up.
As a Steeler fan, it is hard to understand the kind of chaotic nonsense some organizations go through, seemingly for no reason.
Dallas is the poster child (even moreso than the RedSkins, in my mind).
You read this, and you say, the key criteria for being Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys is a willingness to BEND OVER.
Wonder if some of the TYPE A Players have noticed?
I hate loving the cowboys.
Looks like they are ready for a major Super Bowl run next season.
Jerry Jones is like the little old man who goes out to his workshop to tinker with things so he will have something to do. The guy who starts out with a basic birdhouse but just keeps adding bells and whistles to it trying to make a bird Mansion. That part is okay, the problem is his workshop is a billion dollar arena and his toy he tinkers with is a multi billion dollar sports franchise.
Change is a constant with the Cowboys….Except with their GM. What a tool. But a moneymaking fool…

I hate loving the cowboys.
——————————————-
I love hating the Cowboys!
This is a simple matter of definition of the term major. Real world example: when the company I worked for was bought out, we had 10000 employees worldwide and we were told that there would be minor changes but we would barely notice them. Six months later, we were down to 5000 .
not a good idea to make Callahan mad…
“What could it be? It’s a mirage,
He’s scheming on a thing that’s sabotage…”
STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES…JUST WAVE AND SMILE BOYS>>>WAVE AND SMILE.
Jerry is a genius. Look at the #’s 3 and 5 on most commented on PFT. This is an 8-8 team bascially for the last 12 years and people are drawn to it like a moth to the fire. Whether you like them or you don’t Jerry keeps you interested in this team and he keeps putting tons of money in his pocket.
and eagle’s fans, please no more commenting until you put on your big boy pants and win a SB.
OK, let’s see if I got this straight.
Your 100 million dollar QB is coming off major back surgery and will be better then he ever was?
Your team is going to be at least 25 million over the salary cap before you signed your field goal kicker to a huge contract?
You now have structured your organization so coaches will be coaching coaches?
The owner/GM/coach/micromanaging/media hungry idiot is trying to portray that these are moves that will continue to improve the team?
And last but not least you call yourself American’s Team because you are dysfunctional like the US congress?
Jerry reminds me of my teams’ old owner. And yes, i’m an Oakland Raiders fan…
walla2 … the difference is that Jones has been a bad football guy from the get go. I think, and you tell me what you think, Davis was actually a football genius, but by the end (say 10-12 years or so) the game had passed him by and his capacity to change the game deteriorated … he got too old to do it the “maverick” way.
This story is really funny. If the Cowboys continue under their current General Manager, they will have more coaches than players. Mr. Jones is suffering from chronic head-up-his-azz disease which means the Cowboys will be a .500 team til he retires, expires, or sells out.
I’ll take “Things that rhyme with bluster duck” for $2000, Alex.
Only thing that has not changed in Dallas in the past 10+ years is Jerry and Romo, everything else has changed, and the wins have not happenned now is time for Jerry to get rid of Jerry and well we all know where Romo needs to go. Can we please draft a QB and develop him. Please.
LOOK up at the JUMBO TRON…its a bird, its a plane..no>>ITS STUPID MAN.
I hope Jerry lives forever.
–Eagle Fan
As a former Dallas Cowboy fan I hope they get their act together. I dont even buy Dallas Cowboy merchandise anymore because they are such a joke in the NFL nowadays. I wouldnt be caught dead with a cowboys jersey or hat, let alone dish out a few hundred dollars to go to one of their games.
