Report: Patriots asked about acquiring Larry Fitzgerald

AP

The Patriots’ search for wide receiver help continued throughout last season.

But they tried to make a sizable splash to address the problem.

According to Tom Curran of CSNNE.com, the Patriots “sent out feelers” to the Cardinals last year to see if Larry Fitzgerald happened to be available available.

There’s no indication the inquiry was viewed as serious, or progressed very far.

Fitzgerald is 30, and will count $18 million against the salary cap, so it might be worth calling back.

The Patriots got a good year out of Julian Edelman, but the need for a big-time target for Tom Brady remains.

Of course, the Cardinals showed a pulse this year under new coach Bruce Arians, just missing the playoffs at 10-6, so dealing a key part might not be anything they’d consider at all.

At any rate, the fact the speculation had some legs last offseason will make it a topic until the Patriots make a move at the position.

  1. I’m surprised they didn’t contact the Bucs and try to fleece them for Vincent Jackson. Here’s the conversation.

    Schiano: Hello
    Belichick: Hey Greg, it’s your hero Bill!
    Schiano: OH BOY EVERYONE, BILL IS ON THE PHONE!!!!!
    Belichick: Hey friend, we’re looking for a WR, could you trade us Vincent Jackson!?!
    Schiano: Oh I don’t know, last time I gave Blount and Talib everyone said you took advantage of me.
    Belichick: Don’t listen to those people Greg, listen to me – I’m your hero.
    Schiano: It’s TRUE you are!
    Belichick: Great then, so it’s a done deal. We’ll send you a 7th round draft pick and I’ll send you a personally autographed posted of myself made out to you!
    Schiano: OH BOY EVERYONE I’M GETTING A SIGNED POSTER! DEAL, DEAL, DEAL!

  2. This guy is every Patriots fan’s wet dream.

    I hope the Patriots keep pursuing this, I know he’s 30 but he can still bring it. Fitz would be the perfect Patriot too from a leadership standpoint.

  3. They need to inquire about a CB who won’t get hurt in the AFC Championship game…right on cue.

  4. Bill will be kicking himself for years for not extending welker. He knows it. He’s just trying to find a solution now

  5. so its SB week and i’m reading about a supposed rumour of a transaction that never happened last 2 seasons ago?? child plz.

  6. If the Pats can afford it that would be a great pickup. Fitzgerald is the type of person and player you want on your team.

  7. I doubt t rest of the NFL would be excited to see Fitzgerald somehow land in New England. The last time Belichick got that kind of talent for Brady, the team went undefeated in the regular season and came within one missed call and a fluky play from winning it all.

  8. It wasn’t because it was not Larry Fitzgerald running those patterns in the AFC championship game that the receivers didn’t make the catch. It was because, on 3 critical throws, 2 of which were sure touchdowns, BRADY OVERTHREW OPEN RECEIVERS.

  9. Haha, you know that baby tommy was crying in hoodies office after the Den game. Look, I hate Brady but the lack of effort to get him a big time WR is mind boggling in today’s game. They went 18-1 with randy Moss killing teams. Think hoodie, think.

  10. So they are finally going to replace Randy Moss after what, 3.5 years. Oh well, better late than never.

  11. Anything to keep NEw England in the spotlight, i guess..They got trumped far worse than the score indicated and still we need to hear, not about a trade that almost happened, but rather a call to see if a guy was potentially available for a trade, maybe.
    I don’t care about 29 other teams the week of the Super Bowl and the only reason I care about the Bills this week is because of coaching moves made.

    This week is about the Broncos and Seahawks and it should be about them, not about a phone call that was made last summer.

    So, what’s your team’s excuse?

  13. Arians declined to make the deal when all the Patriots were offering was a sixth and seventh round draft choice.

  14. Larry is the class of the NFL. No one deserves a ring, but Fitz comes close and I’d love to see him get one.

  15. In baseball they say “better to trade a year too early than a year too late”

    But if we trade Fitz its for multiple picks and one needs to be a 1st rounder

  16. Peytons convo with Brady on the phone: Hey Brady me and Fitz played golf the other day, man did we have a match, we had to go a playoff.. an extra hole.. YEAH WE PLAYED 18 AND 1.. TOO SOON?.. IM SOWWY.

  17. Sorry Patriot fans, Jimmy Johnson and Cowher don’t speak for the rest of the league. The legacy of the Pats is cheating. Own it. Embrace it.

  18. This would make too much sense for it to happen especially with the Cards having too many good receivers who want the ball while Fitz is tired of being the decoy who just missed another 1,000 yard season being a team player to prop up the other receivers who finally started to run their routes correctly over halfway into the season.

    If Fitz wants this, it will happen just before the draft or after depending on who the Cards draft or plan to draft.

  19. The Patriots were an 8-8 ball club this past season who had several games gift-wrapped for them by the zebras.

    They got exposed by the Broncos. I can’t wait until they miss the playoffs, which will probably be next season.

  20. If he could restructure his contract in a way that wouldn’t make it a crippling cap hit, I can totally see Belichick making this happen. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s possible.

    I think they’ll take a run at Emmanuel Sanders again if they can and possibly Nicks if he comes cheap enough. With Wilfork, Kelly and Mayo coming back healthy next year, the defense will be in great shape and it’s possible the WR spot gets addressed in the first round finally. I’d love to see them move up and snag Mike Evans, but there are a lot of talented WRs coming out.

  21. They won’t miss with the playoffs while Brady’s in uniform and BB is on the sideline. Jus’ saying.

  22. Arians: Hey Larry, the Patriots just called to ask if you were available.
    Fitz: Wow, really?!
    Arians: Yeah, I told em to stick it up their butt. Don’t worry. You’ll be a Cardinal FOREVER…
    Fitz: FFFFFFFUUUUUU—

    Um, how ’bout my team doesn’t cheat or have a fan base that’s “allegedly” educated but leans on the “everyone’s doing it” mantra to try to downplay the simple fact that:

    YOUR TEAM CHEATED AND THEY WERE CAUGHT! AND THEN THEY CHEATED AGAIN!!!

  24. Patriots should make a package deal and trade Ryan Mallet Stevan Ridley and Danny Amendola for a 1st 2nd and 5th round draft pick in this year’s NFL draft. It would be cheaper to make a trade and draft Sammy Watkins I like the Rutgers WR. Brandon Coleman maybe the next larry Fitzgerald. Pats need another Tight end I shouldn’t be surprised if they double dip and take University of Washington Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins or Jace Amaro than in the 2nd Round moving up to grab Notre Dame Defense Tackle Louis Nix III.. there’s rumors out there floating around if the patriots can’t acquire larry Fitzgerald they might go after free agent Anquan Boldin, Brady’s needs more weapons on offense so I see them making some moves this off season..

  25. Fitz Stays.

    There’s the money. There’s also the fact that his numbers were down due to hamstrings and learning a new offense and 2 new receiver positions.

    The Cards will want to make a push next year with everything settled in.

  26. Lets get serious about Gronk he is way to injury prone or just snake bitten. How about moving Gronk to STL for the 2nd pick getting. Drafting Clowney there and then Benjamin from FLA St. Locking up two positions for the next 4-5 years. Hopefully putting Clowney opposite Chandler will give them a serious Defense Line. Adding Benjamin with Eddelman will give Brady what he needs to finish his career in style… Plus we need some cap space to keep Talib an Blount and let Brandon Spikes walk and trading Ridley and Mallett for a couple of Draft picks what are your thoughts about that

    No, they were 12-4. I looked it up; it hasn’t changed.

    The Pats missed the playoffs in 08 when they finished 11-5. You missed it.

    Made my night with that one.

  30. Hakeem Nicks is going to he a FA. It’s more likely they pick him up than Fitz, but wouldn’t it be just like Bill to pick up both when everyone is thinking it would be just one. Just like when they used to have two great TEs.

  31. Pats better do something, Brady retirement will bring Belichick retirement, and then Pats need to get used to draft pick seasons. Its either going to be the next couple years or 10 years from now.

  32. Sorry Patriot fans, Jimmy Johnson and Cowher don’t speak for the rest of the league. The legacy of the Pats is cheating. Own it. Embrace it.

    The Broncos cheated both years they won the SB and were fined and lost draft picks. The are also the only organization to be fined for taping other teams practices. Just saying. The Pats have done neither.

    Wes welker: Rec(73) yds(778) 1st(49)
    $6mil/yr

    Julian Edelman: Rec(105) yds(1,056) 1st(54)
    750k/yr

    The Pats don’t value the slot position enough to resign Welker at that price for that position. In this system any slot guy will crush it, Edelman is proof of that.. Unfortunately he’s a FA and we gave that money to Amendola??? Another slot guy? which goes against all the common sense of this whole thing. Its the outside WR they need to spend on, and haven’t been able to it replace since Moss.

    As always, the Patriots come up short.

    ——–

    Right, except when they play the steelers.

    What was it? Pats 55- steelers 31 this time? Wasn’t that the most devastating beat down in steeler history that knocked them out of the playoffs this year? The only difference is that usually the pats knock the steelers out of the playoffs when they play at heinz field.

    Why would you even post such a comment about the pats? Steeler fans are usually smarter than to serve up these softballs and talk such trash.

  35. “to see if Larry Fitzgerald happened to be available available.” Available available?!!? Do any of you writers do more than spell check? Two articles read here and both had 3rd grade grammar.

  36. Cardinals would be crazy to let Fitz go but when he’s supposed to be making QB $ the Cardinals could likely get a2nd rd pick for him. Feel sorry for Fitz as his QB situation hasn’t been all that great. Brady would be a big upgrade from Palmer

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Where were you two weeks ago when the former Steelers Coach stated that what BB did was done throughout the league?? Only difference was the Pats got ratted out by the Yets…even though the Yets did it to the Pats the year prior. You really should get your facts straight if you are going to play with the big boys. Are you a Broncos fan on here complaining about spygate?? How about Capgate? Not only did they cheat the cap once but after getting caught and HEAVILY fined they did it again, amongst other things.
    Winningest team last 20 years 13 straight winning
    seasons !!
  39. Ok after the trades the Pats have made in the past… Like Moss, Talib, Blount. Why would any team trade with them?
  40. The Patriots are SO CHEAP that the Cardinals probably didn’t even answer the phone when they saw Bill on caller ID.
