Report: Patriots asked about acquiring Larry Fitzgerald

Larry Fitzgerald, Antonio Cromatie AP

The Patriots’ search for wide receiver help continued throughout last season.

But they tried to make a sizable splash to address the problem.

According to Tom Curran of CSNNE.com, the Patriots “sent out feelers” to the Cardinals last year to see if Larry Fitzgerald happened to be available available.

There’s no indication the inquiry was viewed as serious, or progressed very far.

Fitzgerald is 30, and will count $18 million against the salary cap, so it might be worth calling back.

The Patriots got a good year out of Julian Edelman, but the need for a big-time target for Tom Brady remains.

Of course, the Cardinals showed a pulse this year under new coach Bruce Arians, just missing the playoffs at 10-6, so dealing a key part might not be anything they’d consider at all.

At any rate, the fact the speculation had some legs last offseason will make it a topic until the Patriots make a move at the position.

5 wins for the Vikings in 2013. Ha. That will probably be their best win total for the next 10 years.

As a Jets fan Larry needs to stay out west. Would not want to see he and Tom Brady together. Yikes!!

I’m surprised they didn’t contact the Bucs and try to fleece them for Vincent Jackson. Here’s the conversation.

    Schiano: Hello
Belichick: Hey Greg, it’s your hero Bill!
Schiano: OH BOY EVERYONE, BILL IS ON THE PHONE!!!!!
Belichick: Hey friend, we’re looking for a WR, could you trade us Vincent Jackson!?!
Schiano: Oh I don’t know, last time I gave Blount and Talib everyone said you took advantage of me.
Belichick: Don’t listen to those people Greg, listen to me – I’m your hero.
    Schiano: It’s TRUE you are!
Belichick: Great then, so it’s a done deal. We’ll send you a 7th round draft pick and I’ll send you a personally autographed posted of myself made out to you!
Schiano: OH BOY EVERYONE I’M GETTING A SIGNED POSTER! DEAL, DEAL, DEAL!

I hope the Patriots keep pursuing this, I know he’s 30 but he can still bring it. Fitz would be the perfect Patriot too from a leadership standpoint.

  21. ez4u2sa says: Jan 28, 2014 5:35 PM

I doubt t rest of the NFL would be excited to see Fitzgerald somehow land in New England. The last time Belichick got that kind of talent for Brady, the team went undefeated in the regular season and came within one missed call and a fluky play from winning it all.

  22. dwoofer says: Jan 28, 2014 5:37 PM

It wasn’t because it was not Larry Fitzgerald running those patterns in the AFC championship game that the receivers didn’t make the catch. It was because, on 3 critical throws, 2 of which were sure touchdowns, BRADY OVERTHREW OPEN RECEIVERS.

Anything to keep NEw England in the spotlight, i guess..They got trumped far worse than the score indicated and still we need to hear, not about a trade that almost happened, but rather a call to see if a guy was potentially available for a trade, maybe.
I don’t care about 29 other teams the week of the Super Bowl and the only reason I care about the Bills this week is because of coaching moves made.

This week is about the Broncos and Seahawks and it should be about them, not about a phone call that was made last summer.

  49. truths4all says: Jan 28, 2014 7:57 PM

This would make too much sense for it to happen especially with the Cards having too many good receivers who want the ball while Fitz is tired of being the decoy who just missed another 1,000 yard season being a team player to prop up the other receivers who finally started to run their routes correctly over halfway into the season.

If Fitz wants this, it will happen just before the draft or after depending on who the Cards draft or plan to draft.

  50. patsfan1820 says: Jan 28, 2014 8:07 PM

As much as I’d love to see this happen I don’t think it would. Nicks is a much cheaper option.

  51. cursedvikings1998 says: Jan 28, 2014 8:16 PM

The Patriots were an 8-8 ball club this past season who had several games gift-wrapped for them by the zebras.

They got exposed by the Broncos. I can’t wait until they miss the playoffs, which will probably be next season.

  52. iseek11 says: Jan 28, 2014 8:23 PM

Fitzgerald for Brady straight up. Receiver problem solved.

  53. jolink653 says: Jan 28, 2014 8:31 PM

If he could restructure his contract in a way that wouldn’t make it a crippling cap hit, I can totally see Belichick making this happen. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s possible.

I think they’ll take a run at Emmanuel Sanders again if they can and possibly Nicks if he comes cheap enough. With Wilfork, Kelly and Mayo coming back healthy next year, the defense will be in great shape and it’s possible the WR spot gets addressed in the first round finally. I’d love to see them move up and snag Mike Evans, but there are a lot of talented WRs coming out.

  54. joro5551 says: Jan 28, 2014 8:45 PM

Would be fun to see what L Fitzgerald would do if he had a real QB like Brady. They would be a great combo

  59. esp4nto says: Jan 28, 2014 9:23 PM

Patriots should make a package deal and trade Ryan Mallet Stevan Ridley and Danny Amendola for a 1st 2nd and 5th round draft pick in this year’s NFL draft. It would be cheaper to make a trade and draft Sammy Watkins I like the Rutgers WR. Brandon Coleman maybe the next larry Fitzgerald. Pats need another Tight end I shouldn’t be surprised if they double dip and take University of Washington Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins or Jace Amaro than in the 2nd Round moving up to grab Notre Dame Defense Tackle Louis Nix III.. there’s rumors out there floating around if the patriots can’t acquire larry Fitzgerald they might go after free agent Anquan Boldin, Brady’s needs more weapons on offense so I see them making some moves this off season..

  60. beardinals says: Jan 28, 2014 9:27 PM

    Fitz Stays.

There’s the money. There’s also the fact that his numbers were down due to hamstrings and learning a new offense and 2 new receiver positions.

The Cards will want to make a push next year with everything settled in.

  61. esp4nto says: Jan 28, 2014 9:29 PM

Lets get serious about Gronk he is way to injury prone or just snake bitten. How about moving Gronk to STL for the 2nd pick getting. Drafting Clowney there and then Benjamin from FLA St. Locking up two positions for the next 4-5 years. Hopefully putting Clowney opposite Chandler will give them a serious Defense Line. Adding Benjamin with Eddelman will give Brady what he needs to finish his career in style… Plus we need some cap space to keep Talib an Blount and let Brandon Spikes walk and trading Ridley and Mallett for a couple of Draft picks what are your thoughts about that

  62. thetooloftools says: Jan 28, 2014 9:31 PM

The Pats don’t value the slot position enough to resign Welker at that price for that position. In this system any slot guy will crush it, Edelman is proof of that.. Unfortunately he’s a FA and we gave that money to Amendola??? Another slot guy? which goes against all the common sense of this whole thing. Its the outside WR they need to spend on, and haven’t been able to it replace since Moss.
