Chargers rookie linebacker Manti Te’o’s first NFL season started with a preseason foot injury that kept him out of the first three games of the season.
Te’o didn’t miss any more time over the course of the season, but his right foot wasn’t completely healed by the time the year came to an end. Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego reports that the Chargers confirmed that Te’o had recent surgery on the right foot.
The team was responding to pictures posted on an Instagram account purporting to belong to Te’o that posted a picture of an x-ray that, per Gehlken, “appears to show a surgically-mended stress fracture of the third metatarsal” and another of a foot in a cast. The team did not confirm that Te’o is the actual owner of that account when confirming the message sent by the pictures.
There’s no word on Te’o's timetable for a return to activity, but the fact that he played the final 13 regular season games and both playoff games suggests that the surgery was more routine cleanup than something that will seriously threaten his availability for offseason work.
