Matt Prater worries kickers will be eliminated from football

Broncos kicker Matt Prater fears for the future of his craft.

Prater told reporters during Super Bowl festivities that after seeing the way the kickoff has been devalued, and hearing that the NFL could eliminate the extra point, he worries that kickers might simply be removed from football entirely.

“One day I’m sure they’re going to get kickers out of the game completely in the direction it looks like they are going,” Prater said. “The extra point thing is outside of my control. I don’t mind kicking them. There are some stressful extra points there sometimes, like to tie the game at the end where if you make it they expect you ‘Oh it’s an extra point you should’ve made it,’ but if you miss it everyone is all over you.”

Prater realizes, however, that he doesn’t have any say in NFL rules that de-emphasize the kicker.

“I try not to pay attention to all of that and its one of those things that is out of my control,” he said. “I’m just going to keep kicking and do it as long as I can.”

Prater and other NFL kickers will keep kicking field goals for many, many more years. Extra points and kickoffs, however, may be on the way out.

Note to all the kids playing Kicker out there: Find another position.

Oh well, you can always become a soccer player.

The “SAFER” they make the game, the less it looks like the game we love.

They shouldn’t be eliminated but rather marginalized. The fact is most kickers can make a 50 yarder in their sleep. I would like to see field goals count for 2 points instead of 3 points. Then you might see coaches taking more chances from the 50 yard line in and that in turn would lead to TD’s and not boring, booming field goals.

Kickers. Just think in the first round of the 2008 Draft green bay selected Mason Crosby and skipped out on frank gore.

Right there with ya, Matt. Most of us are concerned that they’re going to entirely remove football from football.

And nothing of value will be lost.

The people have spoken: not a single kicker is in the HoF, and most people support removing the extra point altogether.

To think games are commonly decided by some pencil necked kicker who can’t even make a tackle when he needs to is laughable (hi Kluwe), and when they do eventually get rid of kickers people will look back on the kicker era and ask “What were they thinking?”

There’s already a sport where professional athletes kick a ball around, and nobody here cares about it one bit…

They’re only contemplating eliminating extra points. Not field goals Matty.

Some elements of the game will be lost no doubt. Why does the NFL think it is necessary to remove more variability from the game?
I am also not in favor of the Pro Bowl system of changing possession every quarter. Just takes away from the continuity of the game.

    Eliminate the extra player.

Leave the game as it is, it is a time tested and true sport that people absolutely love.

Why don’t they just move the extra point spot back a bit to make it more difficult…

    They should eliminate punting.

  16. johnnyjagfan says: Jan 29, 2014 7:13 PM

Buffalo missed an extra point in a game this year…I forget which, but it factored into the score and play calling throughout the rest of the game. I know a miss is rare, but eliminating it, while minor in the grand scheme of things, takes out a flier of a consequence for a miss.

The idea of moving it back is fantastic. Heck, make them kick it from the 15. I guess the only measure of success for that, though, is how many misses occur. That’s questionable.

Pretty soon, Goodell will eliminate the use of the foot in FOOTball.

They should rule out fair catches.

Remember when the XFL actually marketed that? Boy the times have changed haha

  19. skiss68 says: Jan 29, 2014 7:24 PM

I think they should make the extra point a 30 yarder or narrow the goal posts.

  20. JackedUpSports says: Jan 29, 2014 7:32 PM

at least your names in the record books forever, right?

  21. dbfan4ever says: Jan 29, 2014 7:37 PM

I think they should give more than 1 extra point or more than 3 points if the kicker can hit one of the uprights. That is harder to do than kicking it through the uprights and if the kicker wants to try for more points there is more of a risk of missing

  22. packerman1968 says: Jan 29, 2014 7:51 PM

    Keep the Kickers…Eliminate Goodell.

  26. zinn22 says: Jan 29, 2014 9:16 PM

Moving the goal post back 5-7 yards might make things a lot more interesting and compensate for todays stronger and more accurate kickers.

I hope the SB is decided by an extra point.

  28. Bronco$32&33 says: Jan 30, 2014 12:02 AM

I hope they don’t eliminate the extra point. Even though most extra points are made there’s still that slight apprehension that it could be missed. There no better or worse feeling than watching your team or the opposing team score a touchdown on the last play but still need the extra point to tie and you see the ball sail wide. I still remember when the bengals missed an ep at the end of a game to tie and the broncos won. Definitely exciting. With that said dropping the EP wouldn’t kill the game.

  29. dondada10 says: Jan 30, 2014 12:40 AM

Eliminating the extra point would really change the way betting lines are made. Less variables.

  30. cheapglazers says: Jan 30, 2014 8:28 AM

Well, they already removed tackling, so why not. Maybe they will remove running next?

  31. drude64 says: Jan 30, 2014 8:58 AM

Heck, put two ADDITIONAL (narrow) uprights on the goal posts, similar to the bullseye methodology, and award additional points to kickers who can nail the inside mark. Now that would be entertaining.

  32. myeaglescantwin says: Jan 30, 2014 10:20 AM

making the kickoff have any type of point value would be foolish.

the NFL would turn into nothing but kickers banging the kickoffs for a score.. Goodell would love it though i’m sure.
