Tim Walton out as Rams defensive coordinator

The eyes of the football world may be trained on the Broncos and Seahawks this week, but there’s business going on elsewhere.

St. Louis is just such a place. Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Wednesday that the Rams have decided not to bring defensive coordinator Tim Walton back for a second season with the team and the team confirmed it a short time later. The Rams wound up 13th in points allowed and 15th in yards allowed during the regular season and finished third in the league in sacks, but finished tied for last in the league in opponent completion percentage and last in yards per pass attempt.

Rumblings of a possible Walton departure began before the season was over. Reports in December indicated that head coach Jeff Fisher had taken on a bigger role in running the defense, although Fisher denied that was the case. True or not, someone else’s hand will be on the wheel come next season.

Gregg Williams ran the defense for Fisher for four years in Tennessee and was slated to be the Rams’ defensive coordinator in 2012 before he was suspended by the league after their investigation into the Saints’ defensive bounties. He’s looking for work after spending a year as a senior defensive assistant with the Titans and being ushered out when Mike Munchak was fired, which could lead to his name coming up in conjunction with the opening.

Minnesota = 10 loss seasons forever. Worst franchise in sports.

    Go Hawks!

Bounty gate 2.0 coming to the Rams? Nah I’d say Wade Phillips is a more likely option.

Good start, now get rid of Schotty Jr.

Nice job waiting until almost all teams had filled their staffs to set this guy adrift.

Funny thing is, those rankings for his defense are higher than Rob Ryan’s career numbers, and people are wondering why Ryan’s not a head coach.

Rams D already played dirty, now it will be official

Seems like a dick move by the Rams to wait until now but then again it’s not like these guys go on unemployment when they’re let go. The Rams must already know who his replacement is to do it at this juncture.

GW already has one foot in the door… Affect the head…

I thought they’d hit the jackpot with the Fischer hire, but they can’t seem to get over the hump. They had Rob Ryan as DC for about 15 minutes and now have dumped his replacement after just one season? They just don’t seem to have a sense of direction on that side of the ball.

Who will be Fisher’s scapegoat next year?

Welcome to St. Louis, Alterraun Verner!!!

Way to wait until all of the other D Coordinator positions were filled before dumping Walton.

    Nicely done, Jeff.

This is a surprise. Why not draft a better secondary? Seeing this defense in person… it is very good. Weak corner / safety play, but front 7 is very much up to the task.

Wasn’t the Rams defense the strength of their team all season? Makes a lot of sense.

    Pretty decent secondary coach though.
