Michael Vick believes he’ll be starting Week One

Michael Vick AP

As the season wound down, quarterback Michael Vick said that he’d be open to returning to the Eagles if he wasn’t able to find a starting role with another team.

There’s more than a month before the free agent market opens and we’ll find out what kind of interest there is in giving Vick that shot. Even then, he could wind up in a competition for the starting job with a draft pick or another veteran. Nevertheless, Vick remained confident when asked Thursday if he’s going to be starting come the first week of the 2014 season.

“Absolutely,” Vick said, via NFL.com. “I can’t see no other way.”

There are certainly teams with a need for either a starting quarterback or someone to compete for a starting job and Vick’s at the top of a shallow free agent crop at the position. There’s a long way to go from that list to starting in the first week of the regular season, though, so it will be a while before we know if Vick’s belief will turn into reality.

If by “starter”, he means someone who will do well enough in camp to get the reps but miss out at least half the season because he’s Mr. Glass. Then yes maybe he’s right.

Just go to the Raiders, where careers go to die.

Michael Vick is a starter in the NFL, but he is so unreliable… How do you plan for him to play even 12-14 games/season?

  3. adam710 says: Jan 30, 2014 3:35 PM

People seem to have forgotten that Vick is not a bad quarterback. He had a bad 2011-2012 but got back on track this season. Foles became starter because he played better, not because Vick was benched. Sure, there are things Vick needs to work on, but he definitely deserves another shot at starter in this league.

  4. amazingguy101 says: Jan 30, 2014 3:36 PM

With so many young qbs exceeding in this league I really doubt he could start but back up there is a real possibility.

  5. rundmc81 says: Jan 30, 2014 3:36 PM

As a Raiders fan I would love to see him finish his career out west. They could get him cheap. McGloin and Pryor could sit behind him and learn. They could draft Watkins or Clowney early. This would allow them more sallary cap money to go towards the defense. Get a big time D-Line and put some presure on these AFC west QB’s. Id love to see Clowney and Allen/Orakpo/Hardy fold Smith, Manning and particularly Rivers up like a pair of old socks.

  6. bucrightoff says: Jan 30, 2014 3:36 PM

He should go to Washington so the Redskins can have the two QBs least likely to make it through a full season uninjured.

  7. doe22us says: Jan 30, 2014 3:38 PM

Starter for 6 games tops, and then you are done. Too injury prone.

  8. durno99 says: Jan 30, 2014 3:38 PM

    Vikings!

  9. bigd9484 says: Jan 30, 2014 3:38 PM

Well… Oak, Min, Hou, Jax, Cle, Ten need a starter for this upcoming season. Stl, Ari, TB and maybe even the nyg / nyj could be looking into QB’s by midseason depending on how the first 6 weeks go. I don’t think Vick is anything special anymore now that he is separated from Reid, but to think he wouldn’t be better than what those first 6 teams currently have? I would probably agree with Vick. He will be starting… somewhere.

What Michael Vick, my mother and I have in common is we all have equal chances of starting in the NFL this fall.

  11. jebdamone says: Jan 30, 2014 3:43 PM

as sad as it is for me to say, vick would be a godsend for the vikings in 2014, even just as insurance when the next franchise qb we draft is garbage.

  12. wholelottaawesome says: Jan 30, 2014 3:44 PM

I think he should sign with the 49′ers.

  13. 3yardsndust says: Jan 30, 2014 3:46 PM

Vick sucks. He’s just a backup now.

  14. kneelbeforesod says: Jan 30, 2014 3:46 PM

    …..of the preseason.

  15. rawdog2013 says: Jan 30, 2014 3:51 PM

If we don’t draft a starting QB than we’ll take Vick in Oakland. I would love for Pryor to be the man, but not sure he has it.

The question is whether Dennis Allen and Reggie will stake their jobs on Vick. Their both on short leashes.

I don’t think Vick goes to the Raiders.

  16. thevikesarebest says: Jan 30, 2014 3:53 PM

He can come here to Minnesota we are building a threat with mike zimmer.SKOL

  17. parasolmonster says: Jan 30, 2014 3:54 PM

“People seem to have forgotten that Vick is not a bad quarterback.”

He is a terrible decision-maker, turns the ball over far too much, abysmal in the red zone. He’s a bad quarterback.

  18. johnnyjagfan says: Jan 30, 2014 3:55 PM

Houston should sign Vick for a 2 year deal and draft a QB in 2nd round after trading out of the top spot. But they won’t–they’ll take Johnny Football.

  19. antalicus says: Jan 30, 2014 3:59 PM

If one of these QB needy teams skips on a QB and goes with Clowney or someone else I can see them acquiring Vick.

I can see Vick doing well on a team like the Vikings with an already dominate run game and emerging pass talent in Patterson and Rudolph and a trusty Jennings, but they would have to take some 2nd Round QB as a project.

  20. whatnojets says: Jan 30, 2014 4:00 PM

He will sign with the RNFL league (Retired National Football League)

  21. JSpicoli says: Jan 30, 2014 4:01 PM

OAK might be it, and he needs to stop running so much and maybe he can stay healthy.

  22. doubleogator says: Jan 30, 2014 4:09 PM

Forgot to say in the Canadian Football League…

  23. jjackwagon says: Jan 30, 2014 4:40 PM

Convicted criminal with diminishing skill sets…this guy has Raider written all over him.

  24. stevincinci says: Jan 30, 2014 4:43 PM

Wouldn’t mind seeing him come to Cincinnati to put pressure on Andy. They tried to get him when Philadelphia signed him. Doubt it happens though.

  25. baltimoresnativeson says: Jan 30, 2014 4:43 PM

Go to the Browns, Bucs, Jets, or Jags.

He would be an improvement on whoever they planned on sacrificing to the leagues defensive linemen week 1.

  26. tformation says: Jan 30, 2014 4:47 PM

As a Bears fan let me just say to Vick, please go to Minnesota.

Man, it was great the last time Minnesota brought on a once mobile QB at the tail end of his career. That worked out really well… for the rest of the NFC North, anyway.

I need some more reasons to hate the Vikings as it is.

  27. iloveagoodnap says: Jan 30, 2014 4:47 PM

“I can’t see no other way.”
    ………..
That quote is a punchline in itself.

Vicks decision making and lack of smarts is why i dont want him on my team. He doesnt help himself either.

  28. ravenswhat says: Jan 30, 2014 4:53 PM

The man is confident you gotta give him that. Stupid..but confident.

  29. khmer379 says: Jan 30, 2014 5:05 PM

Micheal Vick as a Minnesota Vicking it has a ring to it lol

  30. ohioteamsusuallysuck says: Jan 30, 2014 5:07 PM

Browns should get Vick and Manziel. By time Vick is hurt browns will be out of playoff chase anyway. I can hear the Vick and dawg pound comments already.

  31. shipdog7 says: Jan 30, 2014 5:17 PM

The crazy thing is if you have experience running a team in the NFL they will pay you plenty. Just in case. Backup, injury, or poor play. We used to call them vagabonds. Journeymen. Now they are millionaire assets. Their assets on the bench half the season.

  32. rliseraz says: Jan 30, 2014 5:39 PM

    Maybe he should call Cleveland.

  33. phillyeaglefan says: Jan 30, 2014 5:54 PM

I like Michael Vick and wish him well if he goes onto start somewhere.

  34. afewzigzagsplease says: Jan 30, 2014 5:55 PM

I assume Vick is referring to starting for the Jags? He certainly won’t be the Eagles starting QB unless Foles is injured.

  35. 92nick182govikings says: Jan 30, 2014 6:02 PM

If the Vikings dont get the qb they want in the draft (and please god dont settle for a blake bortles (a christian ponder in the making!) I would take a long hard look at mike vick. I feel he could be the perfect (interim) QB as we wait to finally get our long over due Franchise QB.

  36. joetoronto says: Jan 30, 2014 7:37 PM

It’s one thing to be a psychopath, but it’s another to be a delusional idiot psychopath like Vick.

He’s so delusional, he belongs in Kansas City, where they actually thought they had a good team.

    Surprise!

  37. johnnycantread says: Jan 30, 2014 7:51 PM

“… And starting at QB for your Edmonton Eskimos, Michael Vick!”

  38. russell17003 says: Jan 30, 2014 8:03 PM

I believe Michael Vick isn’t Tall enough to be an effective Pocket Passer(5′ 11″),his own offensive line blocks his line of sight. So he Scrambles and he’s not getting any younger.

  39. pftstory says: Jan 30, 2014 8:11 PM

The MN question is a defender at 8 and Vick, or D. Carr.
Bridgewater, Manzeil, Borttles are all gone by pick #8. (yes some are spelt wrong).
Carr maybe too unless one of these teams determines they find the next Russell Wilson to scoop up in the 2nd or 3rd. They all really need to find a long term answer to draft and start week 1,
So the Raiders will need to ask, Carr or Clowney.
I don’t see Vick being a factor. They already have QB’s on the roster capable of holding the fort until they get the future. Vick’s really not much (if any) upgrade.

Which will a GM fear more, passing on a QB that turns out to be the next big thing, or drafting the QB that turns out to be the next big bust?

To me St Lou and MN will define this draft. Does St Lou trade down because they can still get “their guy” after trading with a QB hungry team. Does MN trade up, to make sure they get a QB before they are all gone.
I do not see them trading with each other though.
I see one of them doing a deal with CLE.

Doesn’t hurt to dream Vick! Bye, Bye!!!

  41. purpleman527 says: Jan 30, 2014 8:35 PM

Dog killer will be in purple for 2014, since that’s what minny does with the QB position.

Then look for minny to draft a 2nd or 3rd round QB.

  42. deflateddome says: Jan 30, 2014 10:13 PM

Do some of you think Norv Turners has shown a history to or would even consider adding a washed up oft injured read option dumpster fire like Vick?

Now if Leslie was still the coach…..The victim rescue signings from McNabb to Vick would continue at the QB position…

  43. eastwoodchair says: Jan 30, 2014 11:39 PM

Oh, good grief ! What will Marcus Vick do if Mike can’t support him !?!

  44. mediasloppy says: Jan 30, 2014 11:51 PM

Cassell > Vick or I’d say he can’t be any worse than what MN has had to work with since Favres one great season.

  45. tigrrrr says: Jan 31, 2014 6:35 AM

    Vick…. Just go away!!

  46. c9zz says: Jan 31, 2014 8:11 AM

His chances of starting are as tenuos as his grasp of the English language.
