Report: Browns hire Dowell Loggains

Tennessee Titans' new offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains talks with players during the first half of their NFL football game with the Houston Texans in Nashville, Tennessee Reuters

Mike Pettine has reportedly added someone to his offensive coaching staff, it’s just not clear what role Dowell Loggains would occupy.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Loggains has been hired by the Browns and will be on the staff as either the quarterbacks coach or offensive coordinator. Loggains reportedly met with the Browns on Thursday. Loggains was the offensive coordinator in Tennessee for over a year before being let go at the end of the season along with coach Mike Munchak.

The Browns have also reportedly spoken to former Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, but Rapoport reports that he is unlikely to end up in Cleveland. Rapoport’s colleague Albert Breer reports that the team wanted to hire Bill Callahan as offensive coordinator and Loggains as quarterbacks coach, but the Cowboys have not allowed Callahan to look for employment elsewhere despite adding Scott Linehan to the staff to call plays.

Raiders quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo has also been in the mix and reportedly interviewed with the team on Thursday as well.

Do the Browns play the Vikings? If so, that’s an easy win.

you can either go out there and actually “do well”, or you can take the Brown’s approach and just hire a guy named DoWell

Wow the browns owner has gutted this team. Get ready to see empty seats mr flying J. I watched dowwelll in tennessee and it was tough. Put it to u this way i was more excited to watch bernard pollard and the defense than i was a dowwell ran offense every sunday. He got promoted in tenn due to the “buddy” program they had going on for past decade. Directv nfl sunday ticket sales will skyrocket in the cleveland area!

I am a Browns fan but now I just laugh at how awful their decision making is. Thank goodness for the NFL PACKAGE!

I’m a Titans fan. If he is your OC…bad hire.

  18. zonedogz says: Jan 30, 2014 6:58 PM

    Pettine should’ve stayed in Buffalo.

  19. bensstinkyfingers says: Jan 30, 2014 7:01 PM

Sounds like a championship caliber coaching staff I’ve never heard of. That being said Turner and Horton were the big name coaches that led them to a 4 win season. It’s a crapshoot!!!

  20. gary2525 says: Jan 30, 2014 7:01 PM

The browns r not going to hire any top coaches that want say so on who they draft or sign in free agency so u will have below average coaches until u get those bums out of the front office

  21. seatownballers says: Jan 30, 2014 7:02 PM

Look at all those draft picks. Imagine this team if they get themselves a gio bennard, a kiko alonso, and a Russell Wilson types.
    Hope is a draft away

  22. browns627 says: Jan 30, 2014 7:03 PM

at least the front office is doing their homework…

  24. tennesseetitans10 says: Jan 30, 2014 7:29 PM

In all honesty this is a horrible hire for you guys. Ask any Titans fan and they will tell you how predictable this guys play calling is

  25. kkautsky says: Jan 30, 2014 7:33 PM

Dowell Loggains? Hmmm. Sure looks like Paul Williams to me.

  26. youngstownbengalsfan says: Jan 30, 2014 7:37 PM

They just keep adding cars to the train wreck! The caboose will be when Haslam is rotting in jail.

I’m a Bengals fan but the Browns great fan base deserves so much more than this. The concept of continuity clearly didn’t rub off from the stoolers to haslam.

  27. gary2525 says: Jan 30, 2014 7:40 PM

Explain to me how the front office is doing there homework

  28. brownsprotonator says: Jan 30, 2014 7:41 PM

I think this may be the only man in the NFL shorter than Nickels Banner

  29. cguy7 says: Jan 30, 2014 7:51 PM

He and Banner saw eye to eye. (literally)

  30. charman11 says: Jan 30, 2014 7:51 PM

I am just going to have to say let’s give them a chance.. I mean we had 4 wins last year. they can’t do much worse with all these draft picks we have and sorry Brandon but no Weedon throwing the ball has to be good for a couple of wins right there.
I am wondering what the hell is going on too.. but I gotta believe they have to have a little bit of an idea what they are doing. Don’t they?? Please!!

  31. thefiesty1 says: Jan 30, 2014 8:09 PM

Who? Grasping at straws. Another 4-12 season coming up. Wait, that’s what their record has been for the past uh, years.

  32. ytownjoe says: Jan 30, 2014 8:23 PM

    Who???

  33. emmac13 says: Jan 30, 2014 8:29 PM

Pat Schurmur and Mangini are feeling even more blessed to be with the Eagles and 49ers respectively. Safety Mike Adams is with the Broncos. Phil Dawson with the 49ers. Say bye to Mack and Ward. Joe Thomas is itching to bust out of town. Banner is a moron.

  34. stoicpaisano says: Jan 30, 2014 8:31 PM

    Danja zone.

This crew better hit with their surfeit of picks this year.

  35. pajoe says: Jan 30, 2014 8:38 PM

I think they should hire the little guy on the game of thrones, it is entertainment after all……

  36. root4cleveland says: Jan 30, 2014 8:46 PM

Well I heard that the Browns traded their second first round pick to the Titans in exchange for Dowell, some “magical mustard seeds of hope” and “future draft considerations.”

Because we’re a future focused franchise.

  37. dfco74 says: Jan 30, 2014 9:05 PM

Can you see Super Bowl! boo yah thanks mike Lombardi u the man

  38. emmac13 says: Jan 30, 2014 9:11 PM

Everyone is reporting Dowell is QB coach. Can Mike Munchak leave the Steelers where he is O line coach to be an OC in Cleveland? I would love Brian Billick as OC/ Asst HC. He has seemed To be chiming in a lot lately about Petine.

  39. raiderlyfe510 says: Jan 30, 2014 9:37 PM

Trying to change the culture of a program with coaches from losing teams…..this is just sad.

  40. iamthorny says: Jan 30, 2014 9:49 PM

Quoting the movie Shrek, “There are those who think little of him.”

I hear he favors the short passing game.

3rd and short is where he excels as a play caller.

Big doins in Cleveland where… quoting the YouTube… “you can buy a house for the price of a VCR”

  41. wilburmills says: Jan 30, 2014 9:50 PM

    smart guy–short-but smart

good hire–wish the Titans would have allowed he and Munchak one more year

  42. stoolerz says: Jan 30, 2014 9:58 PM

Actually the Plain Dealer just reported that the Browns are bringing back the Brownie logo. Dowell was hired to fit into the life size Brownie mascot outfit.

  43. madcapdawgfan says: Jan 30, 2014 10:03 PM

It’s been 15 years since I’ve lived in Cleveland, and I’m still a Browns fan. But at this point, it’s more because I like to see how people wrinkle their foreheads in puzzlement when I tell them I watch the Browns every Sunday.

  44. habsfanatic says: Jan 30, 2014 10:14 PM

Are you people blind?? The Browns are going to play the underdog card next year, and not just any underdog but the ULTIMATE ALPHA UNDERDOG! Pure genius Banner, pure genius…

  45. natijim235 says: Jan 30, 2014 10:15 PM

haslam is glueless – took his time to assemble quite possibly the worst coaching staff ever – let the over/under how long they’ll stick begin!

  46. eagler927 says: Jan 30, 2014 10:30 PM

This show just how dysfunctional the Browns really are. The only way Banner and Co. should have hired Pettine is if he had a reputable OC lined up. As it turns out only the Browns could hire a HC who is a defensive coach, who hasn’t been a head coach since high school, without actually having an experience OC lined up.

If Pettine truly had an agreement to bring someone with him, they wouldn’t have taken a flyer at Kubiak, and then ended up with a guy with only year as an OC. Not saying Loggins is a bad coach, but you can’t exactly call going from Norv Turner to Dowell a step in the right direction.

  47. thegreatgabbert says: Jan 30, 2014 10:40 PM

Dowell finds using a microphone and amplifier helps him to be heard by some of the taller players on the team.

  48. ballboy48 says: Jan 30, 2014 11:02 PM

He was hired as the QB Coach, not Offensive Coordinator.

  49. crabbies2013 says: Jan 30, 2014 11:32 PM

They are probably still trying to pry Callahan away from Dallas to be OC.

Moe Howard is rollin in his grave

  51. mcthompso says: Jan 31, 2014 12:38 AM

Kind of a bummer. This team was one of the poor teams that were showing improvement and gathering a lot of talent…some could argue that with a decent QB they’d be close to being, if not, a good team. Then this offseason has turned into a disaster.

Firing Chud has killed this team. There should be a clear direction by now…the front office has set this talented team behind. Everything has to shake out perfectly from here on for them to have a chance to compete. This should’ve been the year that they did, but front office guys just HAVE to make their own imprint, even if it is at the bereft of production.

  52. jpmelon says: Jan 31, 2014 12:57 AM

I’m not sure about this hire, but a bunch of people are commenting about the terrible hiring so far by the Browns. I assure you, many people in Buffalo were sad to see Pettine leave. He did a great job for the Jets as well, prior to working in Buffalo. Hopefully the Browns give him more than 1 season to try and fix things.

  53. headonaswivel says: Jan 31, 2014 8:22 AM

As a Titans fan we are more than happy to be rid of Bilbo Lowgains. Sorry he had to end up in Cleveland.

  54. oldcracker says: Jan 31, 2014 11:36 AM

Good God! If the Browns “brain trust” is doing this to the coaching staff, can you even imagine how they’ll mess up the draft?

Somebody pls tell me we Brown fans have been “punked,” or wake me up from this nightmare.
