Report: Browns hire Kyle Shanahan as offensive coordinator

After a bad ending in Washington, Kyle Shanahan has landed on his feet.

The Browns have hired Shanahan as their offensive coordinator, Alex Marvez of FOX Sports reports.

Shanahan spent the last four seasons in Washington as offensive cooridnator under his dad, Mike Shanahan. Prior to that he spent two seasons as offesnive coordinator in Houston and was previously receivers coach and quarterbacks coach with the Texans.

In Cleveland, the big question is less about the kind of offense Shanahan will run than about whether they can find the right quarterback to run it. The most likely scenario is that they’ll use their first-round draft pick on a quarterback of the future, and hope he turns out to be better than their last first-round quarterback, Brandon Weeden.

    Dear universe,
We are taking an offensive coordinator that knows mobile qbs. Manziel can start house shopping already

  6. 1rockyracoon says: Feb 1, 2014 1:03 PM

Coordinator jobs are few and far between. I can’t blame him for going to the Browns, but I’m guessing the fans aren’t going to be overly enthusiastic.

  7. nfl4days says: Feb 1, 2014 1:05 PM

Hope Johnny Manziel likes the option. A lot.

  8. kokomike says: Feb 1, 2014 1:05 PM

Kyle Shanahan and Johnny Manziel? A control freak and a real free spirit. Match made in Cleveland.

  9. andrejohnsonforpresident says: Feb 1, 2014 1:06 PM

You should’ve gone and worked with kubiak in balti buddy. You could have waited for a sweet oc job to open up. Now you’ll have two bad sections of your career after your eventually leave the browns because its a terribly run franchise.

  10. bst3975 says: Feb 1, 2014 1:06 PM

Right now, it’s highly optimistic to say a coaching position with the Browns is “landing on your feet”. Good luck to him though.

  11. texansdude says: Feb 1, 2014 1:07 PM

Browns fans, I’ll just say when he was OC for the Texans, the offense was probably never better. Of course, they had no D so the effort was pretty much wasted. I don’t know what happened in Washington with his father, but if he can give you what he gave Houston, things might be looking up for you.

Lots of players that have failed in Cleveland, like Weeden, could possibly succeed on a more organized team. They really shouldn’t be judged by their play in Cleveland, where losing is the norm…

  15. dfco74 says: Feb 1, 2014 1:11 PM

Shotgun says boo yah. Super Bowl XLIX here we come. Go Browns.

  16. hpente86 says: Feb 1, 2014 1:13 PM

  18. seatownballers says: Feb 1, 2014 1:17 PM

    Headline correction;
Browns organization has strategically placed themselves to draft Winston in 2015

  20. billytodd2013blbaad says: Feb 1, 2014 1:17 PM

well the Browns could do worse LOL but then again this is the Browns and despite everything that we could say we can all agree they are consistant……….consistantly bad.

    Poor Cleveland.

  22. clesportsfan says: Feb 1, 2014 1:18 PM

Please tell me this says Cleveland Gladiators hire shanahan as OC

  23. bensstinkyfingers says: Feb 1, 2014 1:19 PM

Great Hire! Browns are putting together a young hungry staff with lots to prove. With a solid draft and free agent signings, this team could turn around quick. the rest of the AFC north better not fall asleep on this team.

  24. onearmsteven says: Feb 1, 2014 1:21 PM

Skins fan that isn’t too fond of Kyle but for those saying he sucks seem to ignore he’s had a top 5 offense 3 out of 6 years as an OC and top 10 in 4 of 6. To say he’s “botto of the barrel” is laughable

  25. gbrim says: Feb 1, 2014 1:22 PM

Hard to pick on this hire. The Browns were the last team hiring a head coach, and the one they hired didn’t come with a staff ready to roll. Last year’s last coach hired had his staff ready to go (Arians) and it helped him tremendously. When you do what the Browns front office did you get coaching staff leftovers, and on that basis the Browns could do much worse than young Shanahan.

  26. beerbudsnbevo says: Feb 1, 2014 1:22 PM

Out of one dump of a city to a worse one.

  27. radioactivechimp says: Feb 1, 2014 1:24 PM

It’s tough to give up on a 1st round qb after two seasons, but Weeden is actually 30 years old already. He’s the same age as Jay Cutler and Aaron Rodgers, yet still playing like a 21 year old rookie.

  28. cuda1234 says: Feb 1, 2014 1:26 PM

Does that mean Cleveland is the next stop for Rex Grossman?

  29. mogogo1 says: Feb 1, 2014 1:35 PM

Kyle fought with every QB he had in Washington. He caused the McNabb blow-up, backed Beck publicly while Grossman was in the process of beating him out (like that wasn’t inappropriate and awkward), totally disowned Beck when the guy finally did get to start and stunk, then fought with RG3.

Good luck with whatever rookie QB you get Browns fans. Just a matter of time before Kyle goes to war with the guy.

  30. floratiotime says: Feb 1, 2014 1:36 PM

And that’s why they’re the Browns.

  31. doe22us says: Feb 1, 2014 1:37 PM

Kyle S is a very good OC, that dumpster fire that happened in Washington shouldnt be laid solely on his back.

  32. illiniftw says: Feb 1, 2014 1:37 PM

I feel bad for Browns fans. They had a good OC and DC last year but decided to blow it up. Now they get Shannahan

  37. malik216 says: Feb 1, 2014 1:45 PM

Im born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and I am a true blue Browns fan. But I can honestly say our fans are seriously depressing and will complain about any and everything. I get it! We need change, you guys are tired of the same ole same… but for heavens sake give the new hire(s) a chance. Chud was given a shot in Carolina, he blew it terribly. We took him and he blew it again, and you guys were upset about that. I am not sure of the direction the Org is heading in I just hope it is the correct one. Either have faith or pick a different team, its 31 other one that would love to have a fan that complains about everything.

  38. abrow911 says: Feb 1, 2014 1:45 PM

For all the haters out there… This guy did have one bad season in Washington, you’re right. But before that he had one great one there too. And before that the Texans offense was pretty damn good too. Lastly, was there a lot of other top choices left? Or were any h.o.f. oc’s banging down our door?

  39. rajbais says: Feb 1, 2014 1:45 PM

The first job that he may have been offered without nepotism.

    Man, coaches hate Cleveland.

  40. cri33 says: Feb 1, 2014 1:45 PM

Browns need to start from scratch. Hire a seasoned and proven GM, head coach, assistants, etc. and the owner/family needs to stay out of it. Jerry Jones…are you listening?

  41. jwilliamsspf says: Feb 1, 2014 1:57 PM

He ran the 9th best offense (total yards) in the league last year and 5th in the NFL in 2012. He had successful offenses in Houston during his time there as well. I wonder if anyone who makes comments on this site even watches football. How is this a bad hire?

  42. cpricy says: Feb 1, 2014 1:57 PM

I’m a Redskins fan, I’ve watched all but 4 games in the last 5 years. I can tell you this. This is a great hire for Cleveland browns fans… I can’t speak on his rumored relationship with RG3 but as far a X’s and O’s go, he is a great OC… His side of the ball was the most and only consistent side of the ball in DC, numbers might not show it, and I don’t want to make excuses for anyone, but look at the talent. Washed up D. McNabb, R. Grossman and J. beck then RG3…. McNabb was having statically the best year in Redskins history for a QB before getting benched for bad play… Grossman would move the ball up and down the field then throw a turn over… Beck refused to throw a pass longer then 5 yard (he just sucked) and a healthy RG3… won Rookie of the year and had a top 5 offense. Give him some consistency and time and you will have one of the better offenses in the NFL… He is the real deal… everyone else in DC was terrible not this guy.

  43. camdenyard says: Feb 1, 2014 1:58 PM

  44. boycord says: Feb 1, 2014 1:59 PM

Beerbud. DC is a great city to live in. The pro football team sucks.

Shanahan’s offenses have done well. He wasn’t the problem in DC. It was the entitled QB, owner, and disastrous defense. This is a good hire by Cleveland.

  46. coltzfan166 says: Feb 1, 2014 2:03 PM

  50. mymanmccoy says: Feb 1, 2014 2:25 PM

I guess having the 7th ranked offense w/a spent qb like griffin was just by chance huh?

  51. ballboy48 says: Feb 1, 2014 2:27 PM

Shanahan got a raw deal in Washington. RG3, kept saying he was ready, and it clearly showed, he wasn’t ready to come back yet.

  52. ballboy48 says: Feb 1, 2014 2:29 PM

Does it really matter who the coaches are if the ’14 draft produces as many starters as the ’13 draft,

    ummm that number is “0”.

Banner and Lombardi should be fired if they don’t get 3 starters with all these picks.

  60. rubenxx7 says: Feb 1, 2014 3:17 PM

THat makes it interesting to see if they try to trade for COusins or go for Manziel. Not sure if SHAN is the man though

  62. realfootballfan says: Feb 1, 2014 3:39 PM

Odd match for a Baltimore tree coach to opt for the finesse offensive approach that Shanahan brings to the table. But hey, Baltimore is actually employing one of those guys too, so go figure. Maybe side to side blocking that struggles in the red zone will come back in favor with those Hall of Fame type talents like Joe Flacco and whoever Cleveland drafts hiding its red zone flaws like Elway did once upon a time.

  63. jbcommonsense says: Feb 1, 2014 3:42 PM

Huge Redskin fan here. Upside and downside with K. Shanny. Our running game worked, arguably the problems with McNabb were all McNabb. But RG3 was mishandled, too few targets and running for his life because the OL did not protect him. With Gordon/Cameron, Cleveland has good targets; now you need to upgrade at QB & OL to make K. Shanny’s scheme work.

  64. buckybadger says: Feb 1, 2014 3:47 PM

Not a Browns fan but as a Packer fan I feel for them. Just when they started to look the part of a team that could go somewhere the owners just tear everything up and start over. It isn’t like they cleaned house for a must have coach either. Now they will have to deal with a Shanahan and not even the one that has ever won anything.

They had two great coordinators in Horton and Turner and they tossed them away. With the draft picks they have coming I would have wanted those kids to learn from them, not this staff.

Be so good for the league if the Browns could get an owner that will hire a great GM and let him do his work. Their fans are beyond loyal enough that they could be patient with a draft and develop system. The sad thing is they have a good player base right now and I think they will waste it.

  66. rockthered1286 says: Feb 1, 2014 4:06 PM

@hpente86 you’re assuming the 3 stooges will a) be able to draft players capable of starting (something Cleveland did not do last year), and b) not go sign bug name FA’s who turn into busts (can we say Paul Kruger?). And I love plugging in names as if they are guaranteed picks when you have no idea who the draft shakes out around them. It’s all a crap shoot buddy.

  69. emmac13 says: Feb 1, 2014 4:55 PM

Everybody that thinks Horton is great I don’t get it. He may be good. But not great. His Cardinals defense actually got better with a different DC. The Browns failed to make adjustments and lost a lot of the games in the 4th quarter. Everybody blames management or the QB problem. The fact is if the defense holds the lead they have 2-3 more wins.

  70. emmac13 says: Feb 1, 2014 5:00 PM

So many naysayers and whiners posting. There is no perfect hire otherwise they would not be looking for work. Solid hire. He is experienced. He has had success with his offense in top 10 in 4 of 6 years he’s been an OC. He is young and certainly vying to be a head coach someday.

  76. sillec28 says: Feb 1, 2014 7:59 PM

Weedon was one of the strangest first round QB picks I’ve ever seen. Why would you draft a guy who’s going to be a rookie at an age when excellent QBs are working on their HofF speeches.

  78. mwcarolina says: Feb 1, 2014 8:54 PM

Huge Redskins fan here. Let me answer this about Kyle. There’s one side who says both Shanahans were the fault if the RG3 deal, some say its JUST Mike. I tend to believe the 2nd. As for McNabb I think that was on Kyle AND Mike AND McNabb. As for Kyle as OC, Josh Gordon will have a BIG year, whatever back they get should work wonders and their QB will roll out and maybe do zone read (if they get a mobile QB). Kyle can coach an offense, no doubt there. In my book the only reason he got fired was because of his dad. He has faults too (like quitting too soon on the run game), but he is a good (maybe better than that) OC. Good hire.
