Sheldon Richardon garners Defensive Rookie of the Year honors

AP

A productive first season as a key member of one of the NFL’s strongest defenses has earned Sheldon Richardson a major honor.

The NFL announced Saturday that Richardson, the Jets’ promising rookie defensive tackle, has been voted 2013 Defensive Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press.

The 23-year-old Richardson notched 77 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 16 games (15 starts). He also rushed for a pair of touchdowns on offense.

In December, Richardson made some headlines by suggesting he could be the No. 1 pick in a re-do of the 2013 draft.

Today’s news doesn’t hurt the argument that he may have been on to something.

  1. the tape doesnt lie. this kid is unreal and by far was the best defensive rookie – if not one of the best defensive players – in the nfl this season. a star for many years to come

  2. Grats to Richardson and on the hoF side
Reed, Strahan, Jones & Brooks +Guy so far. No Haley Harrison or Bus this year. I like Shields for the last probably wrong

  3. Gotta admit I was upset with the pick when it happened, but boy was I wrong.

I know a lot of people are going to make the argument that Kiko Alonso is more deserving, what they must realize is that the Bills linebacking core minus Alonso is very weak, which is why his tackling numbers are a little inflated.

Richardson had 77 tackles as a 3-4 defensive lineman, for some perspective JJ Watt had 80 tackles as a 3-4 defensive lineman.

  4. Richardson earning this award – must displease Warren Sapp.

Sapp has been rather critical of Richardson.

Sapp, gi-normous ego that he already had – amazingly seems even more full of himself now that they voted him a Gold Jacket. What a delightful enshrine.

Sapp is very critical of a lot of people, but seems to overlook his own laundry list of failures and shortcomings.

Richardson was a real difference-maker, and though there were a number of strong candidates this year – he richly deserved this award.

  5. If you ask Warren big mouth Sapp he will say otherwise, one of the many reasons i stopped watching the NFL network .

  6. LMAO, now go look up jets select Sheldon Richardson on youtube and see how many negative jet fan reactions you find..So comical, congrats to him.

  7. KIKO ALONSO NEVER CAME OF THE FIELD…HE PLAYED EVERY SNAP!

And saying Richardson was on a better defense, means Kiko deserved it that much more…playing with weaker talent.

This is a joke…ONLY REASON is because he plays for New Jersey, a “big” market.

  8. What kind of stats would would Kiko need to win this? 4 more ints? I dont get it.

    Richardson – 78 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 1 FF, 0 INTs
    Kiko – 159 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 FF, 4 INTs

  9. So your telling me a guy whose job it is to stuff the run, and occasionally rush the passer, wins the award because he finished with 70+ tackles (an unofficial stat btw) and 3.5 sacks? Don’t get me wrong, Richardson is good, but it’s absolutely disgraceful for Alonso to not get that award. 159 Tackles, 4 Int’s, 2 Sacks, 2 FF 1 FR 9 Pass Defensed. Luke Keuchly, you know, that Pro-bowl Linebacker, had identical numbers, except for the FF and FR. If you are going to compare Richardson to Watt @13maram, Watt had 7 more sacks, 4 FF and 2 Recoveries, but lets not dig to deep, right? Call me biased, but I’m sorry, it’s wrong. Last DL to win the award, Suh, had 10 Sacks, an Interception, a FF and 3 pass defensed. While the last LB to win the award, Luke Keuchley, 164 Tackles, 1 Sack and 2 INTs to go along with 8 PDef. I think Kiko preformed more to an award winning level than Richardson. Please, let’s not get facts in the way of any logical voting process.

  10. Bills defense only added in two starters one was Kiko Alonso and the other was Aaron Williams and they went from 27th to 10th in one year. Kid never came off the field and was third in the NFL in tackles. It must be nice to be in large market.

  11. What a joke….only if Kiko had a bigger mouth or a coach with a bigger foot fetish….not even close football wise….or what are those things called???…… Oh yea ….STATS

  12. No shariff Floyd or Xavier Rhodes? I was assured that they were the best players taken in the last decade by any team, and would share this award this year. What were their stats again?

    Oh. Oh crap.

Different positions. Richardson getting 78 tackles at with his assignments is insane. Kiko got all four of his interceptions in the first four weeks, and nothing after that. Kiko is a great young talent, but Richardson played like an all-pro.

  14. LOL at all these “football genuises” comparing the stats of 4-3 LB with a 3-4 Tackle.

Richardson is a rookie who made a major impact, and the same can be said for Alonso.

Why are Bills fans so outraged over this? They should be happy they finally drafted a good player.

  15. Kuechly notched 156 tackles, intercepted four passes and forced 2 fumbles

    Kiko – 159 tackles, 2 sacks, 4 INTs

Apparently those numbers are good enough for Defensive Player of the Year but not good enough for Defensive Rookie of the Year. Got it.

  16. And to hear Buffalo fans talk on this forum, they are the “real New York team”…so how can they cry this whole “big market-small market” nonsense?

You guys either represent “New York” or are the small upstate market 400 miles away from 8 million New York City residents. You can’t have it both ways!

  17. Both are very good players and either would be well-deserving. But kiko’a stats and contributions were bigger. I agree he slowed down at the end of the year and richardson’s were better to finish. But Kiko’s numbers were the same as the defensive MVP if not better. The fact he didn’t make the pro bowl was more ridiculous.

Both players are good and going to be great…
the real question I have is : think Miami drafted the wrong lb from Oregon last year?

    —————————–

That Dion Jordan pick looks worse and worse.

  19. Congrats Sheldon! Kiko had a great year, but Sheldon was a beast with great stats for a 3-4 DE. Relentless motor, there were many times I saw him chase down pro-bowl running backs from behind.

  20. Kiko Alonso played every snap and was the defensive signal caller, he was responsible for making on the field adjustments and making the defensive calls, these very well should have tipped the scales in his favor because he did a lot mentally as well as physical. Either way congrats to Richardson on a great year.

  21. Bills fans should realize the AP are morons the same thing happened when Jarius Byrd was better then Brian Cushing….and Cushings stats where only inflated cause he was a roided up freak now hes got the knees of a 70 year old

  22. Kikos stats trump richardsons by alot so there gotta be other influences as to why richardson won, i dont know what those are so it be nice to hear something other then “he from a big market”

  23. kiki alonzo is an enormous talent and would also have been a deserving choice for droy. who did others (than ap) give it to?
anyway looking forward to see them both playing in the afc east
