The Jets announced Wednesday night that they have hired former LSU special teams coach Thomas McGaughey to fill the position of special teams coordinator.

McGaughey is familar with coaching in New York as he spent four seasons from 2007-2010 as an assistant special teams coach for the New York Giants. He has spent the last three seasons as special teams coordinator for the LSU Tigers.

The Jets will be the fifth NFL team McGaughey has coached for. He has also served as an assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans, Denver Broncos and Giants. McGaughey played DB for the Houston Cougars from 1991-95 and was the school’s special teams captain as a senior. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent and was on the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad late in the 1996 season.

Diamond in the rough. Brought great special teams to the giants and LSU. Heck of an upgrade over Kotwica.
