Former NFL player Hugh Douglas, who was involved in a pair of much-publicized incidents last summer, has agreed to plead no contest to a misdemeanor charge.

Douglas’s lawyer told the Associated Press that he expects Douglas to plead to breach of peace and avoid a jail sentence.

The case began when Douglas was accused of assaulting his girlfriend at a hotel in Hartford, Connecticut. Douglas was initially charged with felony assault and strangulation.

That incident took place shortly after Douglas lost his job at ESPN following a report that he threatened to beat up a co-worker.

A first-round draft pick of the Jets, Douglas was the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1995 and later was traded to Philadelphia and became a three-time Pro Bowler with the Eagles.

He seemed like a great role model when he was with the birds. Maybe having Troy Vincent, Dawkins, Bobby Taylor etc. looking after you helps

Sounds like a good plea. Before people think he got preferential treatment keep in mind that these cases can be very hard to prosecute because often either 1. the “victim” was no victim at all or completely exagerated things or 2. the victim has decided to forgive their assailant and they are back together and have let the prosecutor know that they will not be a very good witness.
