Jaguars want to talk contract with Chad Henne before free agency

Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne is scheduled to become a free agent on March 11, but the Jaguars are interested in signing him to a new deal before that.

Jacksonville General Manager Dave Caldwell said he plans to reach out to Chad Henne’s agent before free agency starts. Caldwell would like to keep Henne around at the right price, but he doesn’t know if any other team might be interested in paying Henne more than the Jaguars are willing to spend.

You never know,” Caldwell said, via the Florida Times-Union. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a big market or a small market. All it takes is one team.”

Henne is no one’s idea of a star, but he is a competent veteran who could be good to have around as the Jaguars groom the rookie quarterback they’re expected to draft in the first round. The Jaguars could do a lot worse than to have Henne alongside Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater or Blake Bortles.

In fact, the Jaguars have done a lot worse: Their last first-round draft pick, Blaine Gabbert, is still under contract for the 2014 season. Gabbert, however, doesn’t appear to have any future with the team, unless it’s as a third-stringer behind both a rookie and Henne.
