Jameis Winston says two more years is the plan

Earlier this week, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher did his best to slow the rush to make quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston the top pick in the 2015 draft.

Fisher said he thought Winston would remain at the school for two more seasons before entering the 2016 draft, something that some took to be wishful thinking for a coach that just won a national title with Winston running the offense. On Thursday, though, Winston told the Associated Press that whatever Fisher said “most likely is true.”

“Obviously I’m a big baseball person, so that’s an accurate statement because I plan on playing baseball next season anyway,” Winston, who pitches for the Florida State baseball team, said.

While we’ve got no reason not to believe Winston will stay at Florida State through the 2015 season, there’s also no reason for Winston to say otherwise at this point. Saying that Fisher was wrong would essentially be declaring for the draft now and there’s nothing for Winston to gain from that, especially if things don’t break his way next season and his decision becomes more complicated.

In other words, it’s probably wise to put a pin in this and revisit it closer to the point that Winston actually has a decision to make about his future.
