Limas Sweed signs with CFL’s Ottawa franchise

Hines Ward, Limas Sweed AP

Limas Sweed is getting a shot with a Canadian Football League team.

The expansion Ottawa REDBLACKS have signed Sweed, the club announced Monday.

A wide receiver from Texas, the 29-year-old Sweed was the Steelers’ second-round pick in 2008. He caught a combined seven passes for 69 yards in regular-season play for Pittsburgh in 2008 and 2009. He missed the entire 2010 season with an Achilles injury, and he was waived-injured with a shoulder injury in 2011.

Sweed had a stint with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2013 but was released in June.

The sad thinkg is, with all our potential FA WR losses, we could actually use Limas Sweed back on the Steelers roster.

You may think that someone named Limas Sweed would be well over a hundred years old, but in fact he is just 29, and probably has a few years left.

Limas Sweed is probably reason #1 why Colbert never should have been promoted from Dir of Football Ops to GM.

    Another fantastic Steelers draft pick.

That picture of him actually catching a football has to be photoshopped.

In 2009, he had one catch for 5 yds after playing 9 games. And WHO said the Steelers know how to draft?

He did blast Cory Ivy in a Pitt-Balt game…best play of his career.

Colbert and the Steelers should have known when he couldn’t hold on to the pen while signing his rookie contract.

    Can’t win ‘em all, I guess…

I hope Ottawa has in their arsenal the play where the WR drops an easy TD bomb then falls down with a pretend hammy which burns a needed timeout.

Scary thing is I’d rather have him on my team than Andy Dalton.

The REDBLACKS? What the heck are REDBLACKS and how long before there is a lawsuit claiming that it’s an offensive and racist nickname?

  19. meatcarroll says: Feb 11, 2014 3:56 PM

What kind of name is Redblacks? Are they gauging fan reaction for a possible Washington RacialSlurs renaming?

Can’t blame the Steelers for drafting him in the 2nd. dude was a beast at UT with VY and during Colt McCoy’s freshman year. There was potential in that pick.

FACT: Andy Dalton KNOCKED pittsburgh out of playoff contention the past TWO SEASONS

Limas Sweed was an incredible athlete who had the hard part–route-running–down cold. Unfortunately, he got it into his head that he couldn’t catch. Or maybe, as classyjacklambert said, he just had hands like sledgehammers. But whatever the problem, it wasn’t something Colbert could have predicted. Sometimes guys show all the promise in the world but just don’t work out.

I hope Limas makes it with Ottawa and wish him all the luck in the world.

In addition to physical injuries, Limas Sweed had emotional issues. I hope he overcame them. Ottawa might be the best chance for him to see if he can perform at the PRO level. From there, who knows.
    I hope he bounces back.

How is the Redblacks an acceptable sports team name? Haha

  26. crownofthehelmet says: Feb 12, 2014 1:18 PM

He’d be the Ravens #1 and the Bengals #2 WR.
