Aaron Kromer arrived in Chicago as both offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. After a year, he’ll be focusing exclusively on the coordination of the offense.
The Bears have announced that assistant offensive line coach Pat Meyer has been promoted to offensive line coach. Kromer will serve only as offensive coordinator.
“Pat came in with an understanding of the offense and quickly assimilated himself with the players,” coach Marc Trestman said in a team-issued release. “He worked with Aaron, collectively, to not only teach the offensive linemen but to bring them together collectively and cohesively as a group.
“The move will allow Aaron to still be closely connected to the instruction and development of the offensive line while expanding his coordinator duties and free up time to help in the growth of all of our offensive players.”
While some may view the move as a demotion of sorts for Kromer, most offensive coordinators just coordinate the offense. By not coaching the offensive line, Kromer necessarily will have more time to do the one job that most if not all other NFL offensive coordinators do.
Coincidentally, Meyer served as Trestman’s offensive coordinator during Trestman’s final year as head coach of the Montreal Alouettes.
