Clowney aiming for a 4.4-second 40-yard dash at the Combine

Former South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is planning to put on a show at the Scouting Combine.

Clowney told Yahoo Sports that he thinks he can run the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds, which is a good time for anyone, but a stunningly good time for a defensive lineman who was listed at 274 pounds in college.

I hope to run a 4.4 right now,” Clowney said. “That’s my goal. On hand times, I’ve been running 4.4s. I hope I can get a 4.4 at the combine. A 4.5, I’m not too worried about.”

At last year’s Combine, the fastest time for a defensive lineman was 4.60 seconds. Clowney scoffed at that time.

“I ain’t going to run a 4.6,” Clowney said. “I’m probably going to run low 4.5, 4.4.”

That may be enough to solidify Clowney’s status as the first non-quarterback drafted.

After he runs the 4.4 he’s going to take 3 months off and do some recreational driving.

    Now that would be impressive

Aiming for him to drop to the fifth pick!!!

    Yah, he’s an amazing athlete….when he’s motivated.

It’ll take a special setting to keep him from becoming the next Haynesworth. (NE?)

And he will prob do it too

  6. dtownsportslions says: Feb 13, 2014 7:40 AM

    That would be unreal

Gonna laugh when he runs a 4.6. Ridciously good time for a DE but he will not run a 4.4 like he is saying not even a 4.5.

Doesn’t matter what your 40 time is when you’re playing at half speed.

    Welcome to Atlanta JDC.

Watch being too confident, Mr. Clowney, you may come in and tank it with a 4.8 40. Happens each and every year that someone times significantly slower than they expect.

Saying it is almost the same as doing it, right?

  13. squinn21 says: Feb 13, 2014 9:10 AM

I can see this guy getting paid and mailing it in.

  14. radford7 says: Feb 13, 2014 9:33 AM

This guy will be the next L.T.

  15. lostsok says: Feb 13, 2014 9:35 AM

This kid has a passion for football. Anyone who thinks he’ll “mail it in” is insane.

  16. schmitty2 says: Feb 13, 2014 9:56 AM

Full speed at the combine, more than full speed behind the wheel, and half speed during an actual game. Got it.

If he actually runs a 4.4, you might actually want this guy to play both ways…

    How do you cover a 6’4″ 275lb TE that runs a 4.4?

The guy is a beast. The Texans would be crazy to pass on J.C. for Manziel and I am a Texans fan. Season ticket holder for 10 years. We do not need Manziel to sale tickets here

  19. classyjacklambert says: Feb 13, 2014 10:11 AM

I can see him running a 4.4 and then scoring about the same on the Wonderlic.

  20. dvic13 says: Feb 13, 2014 10:21 AM

Usually when a guy that fast is playing defense, there’s usually a good reason… No hands. Every defensive player dreams of playing offense, not vice versa.

    We’ll see Mr. Big Shot.

Please fall down to the Raiders, please fall down to the Raiders.

  23. kastout11 says: Feb 13, 2014 11:36 AM

I don’t care how fast he is or how much of an athlete he is, he still takes plays off and cannot beat doubleteams.

  24. hummer53 says: Feb 13, 2014 11:38 AM

So when he runs a 4.8, he’ll look like a clown. No pun intended. Look for him to hold his hammy when he runs.

  25. oldschoolnflman says: Feb 13, 2014 11:48 AM

If you cant beat double teams in NCAA, you may still be a good De in NFL but def not a 1st round pick.

  26. natigator says: Feb 13, 2014 1:16 PM

Question his driving ability and perhaps his in-game motivation all you want, but if you somehow think he isn’t an elite talent you are absolutely crazy.

Everyone talks how QB prospects of Andrew Luck’s skill come along once every 10 years, a DE of Clowney’s caliber also come along once every 10 years. He’d be an absolute lock for #1 if there wasn’t such a need for QBs, that notwithstanding he is still a lock for top 5.

4.4? Looks like a fit for the Raiders!!!!

  29. tindeaux says: Feb 13, 2014 1:47 PM

hopefully he’ll show up as clowney and not ClownY.

Loads of athletic ability but a little short on brains. Way to get expectations sky high and set scouts up for a disappointment.

Capable of being a great player and equally capable of blowing this opportunity.

  31. qb757 says: Feb 14, 2014 10:57 PM

Yeah, I remember “aiming” for a 4.4 when I played too. Just missed it at a 5.1. Less than 1 second off! Soooooooo close.

  32. warjag55 says: Feb 14, 2014 11:31 PM

If he runs a 4.4 he will be picked 1st.
