Report: Ed Reed has $50,000 cash stolen from his car

Ed Reed has made millions of dollars in his NFL career, but he’s now $50,000 poorer.

Reed was the victim of a robbery in which a bag containing $50,000 cash was stolen out of his car, according to Local 2 in Houston.

Police say someone smashed a window in Reed’s car and took the bag of cash from the front seat. Reed had just taken the money out of a bank, and police believe someone who saw him make the withdrawal followed him.

After playing his first 11 seasons with the Ravens, Reed spent part of the 2013 season in Houston before being released and finishing the season with the Jets.

I love me some Ed Reed, but this was a bonehead move. Leaving 50 large on the front seat of your car?

  2. realnflmaster says: Feb 13, 2014 9:59 AM

Why in the world would you withdraw 50k in cash?

  3. arwiv says: Feb 13, 2014 10:00 AM

When you are a bonafide millionaire, its sort of hard to explain why you would ever need 50k in hard cash. That’s why God invented checks.

    Was it the Houston Texans?

Ed, there is place called “BANK” where you can keep your money

  7. flaccodelic says: Feb 13, 2014 10:14 AM

Guys, you can’t truly perpetuate the homeless man ethos without a bag of cash. Can’t do it.

  8. seatownballers says: Feb 13, 2014 10:15 AM

Someone followed him from the bank.
Next time use checks and a debit card.
The boss lifestyle of flashing cash is silly.

It’s less then a single games paycheck so he’ll be fine, still sucks though.

But why have 50k in the car? That doesn’t pass the common sense test.

  13. dapollock69 says: Feb 13, 2014 10:17 AM

  46. minhw0714 says: Feb 13, 2014 1:32 PM

The prime suspect has to be the Texans GM.
That guy has a right to rob Reed another 75 times too.

  47. gridironczar says: Feb 13, 2014 1:40 PM

Sounds fishy. Why does he need $50,000 cash? Why just leave it in the car? I think we might hear more on this.

  48. whodatnhollywood says: Feb 13, 2014 1:41 PM

There’s also a thing called a DEBIT CARD. Just load it and carry it in your wallet if you need access to it quickly. Everybody accepts them~even vendors on the street with their Square swiper for the cell phone.

  61. cheftb says: Feb 13, 2014 4:05 PM

Dear Mr. Reed, the bank (specifically the teller) can give you these paper slips called cashier’s checks instead of cash…… I guess this type of information does not come included in a University of Miami education.

  62. dyhard32 says: Feb 13, 2014 4:15 PM

  66. beelicker says: Feb 13, 2014 5:03 PM

Fellas, perhaps Mr Reed here was possibly speculating in black market archaeological artifacts or perhaps something like rare & classic works of art or something?

Independent brokers of that particular ilk will simply not accept cashier’s checks or plastic …

  67. sikoix says: Feb 13, 2014 5:07 PM

This kind of thing always feels like an insurance scam to me.

What are you doing with 50k in cash (that could be a legal transaction)? Why would you leave it alone in the car before bringing it to it’s destination? I don’t see why else you’d bother filing a report unless you had serial numbers on the bills or some way to track it, or you were planning on making an insurance claim and needed to document the incident.

It is legal tender for ALL debts, public and private. Maybe he just likes the feel of cash. He did earn it, despite the wisenheim errs cheap shots. The thief is the bad guy, not Reed. Three comments:

    1. The only purposes to need that amount of cash are for drugs/gambling/solicitation.

    2. Withdrawing that amount of cash from a bank takes time (banks don’t normally have that amount in the vault). Investigators should be reviewing the phone records of all bank employees from the time Reed notified the bank of the amount of cash he wanted to withdraw until the time his car was broken into.

    3. The Ravens are glad for the service and happy they no longer have to deal with the drama.
