Rick Spielman: Christian Ponder “will be here” next season

Matt Cassel opted out of his contract with the Vikings and Josh Freeman hits free agency next month after his run on the Minnesota bench, which leaves Christian Ponder as the only quarterback with a contract to play for the Vikings next season.

General Manager Rick Spielman said Friday that he’s anxious to see how Ponder looks working with offensive coordinator Norv Turner and quarterbacks coach Scott Turner this offseason. As a result, he says Ponder won’t be leaving the team before the start of next season.

“Christian will be here; I don’t anticipate anything — him not being here,” Spielman said, via Master Tesfatsion of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

There’s not much reason for the Vikings to approach things any other way. They’ve already signaled that they’re planning to select a quarterback at some point in the draft and Ponder’s $1.7 million salary makes him a reasonably priced backup for that player or someone else they acquire during the offseason.

All the pieces are falling into place.

The lowest expectations the Vikings have this year is a Super Bowl ring.

We are the most decorated franchise in the NFL for a reason.

No other franchise does what we do.

Christian Ponder will not start this season.

We will either draft Johny Football or Teddy Bridgewater who will lead us to a Super Bowl win.

    Skol Vikings, let’s go!

    Glory, glory, hail the Vikings!

The Minnesota Vikings impending dynasty will hit the NFL by storm, but don’t say you didn’t hear it here first.

Talent wise, we have the best team in the NFL and arguably one of the best teams of all time (other than QB).

Once we draft our franchise QB (and we will) multiple superbowls will be coming to Minneapolis. They are setting themselves up to dominate the NFC for the decade.

Every team will start trying to emulate the Vikings in every way.
Every fan will be jealous of Vikings nation.
Every owner will be jealous they don’t own a historic future dynasty team like the Vikings.
Every coach will fear traveling to Minneapolis to face this legendary Vikings squad.
Every other teams players wish they’d have been drafted by the superior Vikings roster.
Every GM will wish they had the drafting smarts that Rick Spielman has.
Every blade of grass will wish it would have been grown in the new gorgeous stadium that belongs to Minnesota.

Greg “The Guru” Cosell said that Chris Ponder and Ryan Mallett were the two best QB prospects in the 2011 draft. I hope no one is paying him for his wisdom these days.

  15. The Great Ted Thompson the Genius says: Feb 14, 2014 4:56 PM

It doesn’t make sense to cut him because his salary is guaranteed. I assume they’ll resign Cassel and draft a QB in the first two rounds, so Ponder will be an emergency QB if Cassel gets hurt and the rookie isn’t ready.

  16. oldcracker says: Feb 14, 2014 4:57 PM

God, I pray the Vikings move up and take Johnny Manziel off the table!

Ponder is a good backup QB, especially with his running ability. He could win a game if the starter goes down. Not a bad price for a backup familiar with the team.

  27. gbpackbacker says: Feb 14, 2014 5:21 PM

The only reason why the PACK don’t win it all every year is the NFL and GODdel is out to get us. That’s why the Seachickens won. Just like the NFL handed them a win last year when GB had them beat! We are not ALL inbred. We will not be ignored this year.

He will be apart of the qb competition only if he has an amazing preseason he will get another shot. I like him as a back in case our starter gets hurt he could finish the game. He is just to inconsistent to start in this league.

  31. jokendave says: Feb 14, 2014 5:29 PM

Sometimes new leadership with consistency is all that’s needed. Not just focused on Adrian. Don’t forget Ponder won 10 games the year before with AP. The coaching went down. They had no confidence in him and let him know it. Musgrave’s playbook was the size of a hallmark card and held him back from doing a lot of different things. I think giving him a chance in a new system is worth a shot. I have seen far to many times when we let QB’s go and they succeed elsewhere. Good Luck CP7!!!

As parent club to the Minnesota vikings, the Seattle Seahawks issued the following statement regarding the inane ramblings of a select group of vikings fans:

The Seattle Seahawks organization deeply regrets patently false allegations by a select group of fans from our minor league affiliate, the Minnesota Vikings. The Seattle Seahawks, in no way, endorse the actions and ramblings of these diluted individuals. We have had, and will continue to enjoy, a wonderful working relationship with our minor league affiliate, the Minnesota vikings. In no way, do these false remarks define our feelings toward the Minnesota faithful. We love the fans of the Minnesota affiliate. They have a long tradition of loyalty that is among the cutest of the entire minor league system. A few misdirected fans will not change this. We will continue to value the vikings as resource we can tap as we continue to build a championship caliber program.

  41. 2manyconcussions says: Feb 14, 2014 5:45 PM

What else could Spielman possibly say? I mean, really, he is the only quarterback they have signed, at this point. Even if they intend on drafting a quarterback, you can’t very well get rid of Ponder without first signing someone else.

  42. packfanaj12 says: Feb 14, 2014 5:48 PM

So they let Cassel walk (who has actually won games for the Viks)… They let Freeman walk… who never really had a real chance to thrive and has shown he can play even if it was in the past… and keep the guy who has been known to fail time and time again?!?!

I love how the Vikings are their own worst enemy.

When you are listening to Spielman talk or reading what he said, remember 2 things. 1. About 90% of everything that comes out of his mouth is either a lie, wrong, or painfully obvious so that there is no point in even saying it. 2. You need some sort of escape ie, coffee, alcohol, or an acme frying pan.

The irony is that a year ago, we had to go thru the off season listening to all the Viking fans tell us that Ponder has directed the Vikings to the playoffs and has officially turned the corner, he is and will be the franchise QB for the next decade.

What a difference one year makes. I hope Ponder starts the season with the strategy of protecting whoever they draft at QB from high expectations, not that you can have high expectations and the Minnesota Vikings in the same sentence.

That way, the Vikings will stumble out of the gate and relegate themselves to the basement of the division once again. But the good news is that the fan base should be used to it by now.

Guy’s it is Obvious that the Vikes are going to resign Freeman. Turner is known for spreading the field with strong armed QB’s. Freeman fits the profile to a T. Young and Strong armed, has had a 4000+ yard passing season and has the running back to keep 10 in the box opening it up for the speedy Patterson….Scary scenario….

    Petterson – Pro Bowler
    Rudolph – Pro Bowler MVP
    Khalil- Pro Bowler

    Jennings – Pro Bowler

As a former Ponder supporter, I have to say the experiment is over. Ponder is a wasted roster spot. He had enough playing time to learn from his own mistakes and didn’t. Of the 3 QBs on the team last year Ponder had the least amount of talent and potential. When Ponder was playing his best, he still didn’t have an arm and was an inaccurate passer. He was fortunate that many of his errant throws went in and out of the hands of opposing defenses. Get whatever you can get or dump him.

Look, either you can focus on the fact that your team (Vikings in this example) finished in the NFC North basement in two out of the last three years or you can nitpick some obscure examples of accomplishment (not team, but individual) so as you make yourself feel better.

I say leave the Viking fans alone with their pro bowl berths, its all they have.
