Andrew McDonald, unnamed Player A, has “no problem” with Dolphins organization

McDonald AP

The Ted Wells report concluded that three Dolphins players harassed Jonathan Martin, an assistant trainer, and an unnamed player.

The player known as “Player A” in the 144-page document has identified himself as Andrew McDonald.

McDonald, who came forward because it already was becoming widely known that his McDonald was the unnamed player, expressed disappointment regarding the attachment of his name to the situation.

McDonald’s agent, Brett Tessler, forwarded to PFT a statement regarding the situation.

“Andrew is disappointed that his name has become associated with this story,” Tessler said.  “He’s been a member of another organization since last season and is trying to focus on the future.  When Ted Wells approached Andrew at the end of the investigation, Mr. Wells already had all the information contained in the report that he had gotten elsewhere.  While Andrew can’t speak for any other players involved in the report, he personally has no problem with the Miami Dolphins organization and has the highest opinion of Coach [Jim] Turner both personally and professionally and feels terrible about the way their relationship has been portrayed in the report.”

The Wells report states that McDonald “frequently was subjected to homophobic name-calling and improper physical touching,” that he was spoken to in a demeaning, homophobic way “repeatedly and persistently,” that Turner gave McDonald a male “blow-up” doll as a Christmas gift in 2012 (the other offensive linemen received female “blow-up” dolls), that McDonald viewed the “persistent insults and mocking physical contact as unwelcome,” and that he went along with the conduct because he was a young player.

McDonald, who currently plays for the Carolina Panthers, joined the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2012.  He spent that year on the team’s practice squad.

Who? He just wants a roster spot next season.

Well the text messages conversation posted last week showed Incognito told martin that, “McDonald was going to go to your house with a tranquilizer gun”. so not a surprise.

So you’re saying the Wells report which is mainly verbiage without a lot of substance MAY have some factually incorrect reporting?

Sorry Dolphins but it looks like it isn’t over yet.

  8. falcons999 says: Feb 15, 2014 5:03 PM

The Wells report is a waste of 144 pieces of paper….released after the season and just before a long weekend….and designed to make the league look proactive….and damn the realities.

lets just give a mulligan on this whole thing ok.

wells say’s this and that, the text between martin and richie are clear that they were friends and had a good relationship, then the report states this and that, and this guy comes out and say’s he had no problems. sounds like a witch hunt to me and someone just needed to be blamed.

the lesson learned here: know your friends better before you make fun of thier mom’s and sisters.

From Martin to Incognito via text:

MARTIN: “I’m going to murder your whole [explative] family.”

How come I am not seeing this in any report regarding this incident? I am seeing all of the nasty things Incognito is saying to Martin, but clearly it was a back and forth situation.

Every story is painting ONLY Incognito (when it is now clear other players were involved) as a foaming at the mouth, racist, lunatic of a bully and Martin as this sweet, innocent, poor young man.

so some guys got thier feelings hurt, and this is somehow worse than other problems that teams have dealt with like drug trafficking, murder, rape, assult, sexual assult, murder/suicide, cocaine and other drug use, widespread ped use from the whole teams defense, bounty’s, recording teams practices, the browns and raiders orginizations….. i think i’ll be ok with my team having an issue with guys joking around with people who they thought were thier friends and them not taking it well….could be worse.

  19. hauts81 says: Feb 15, 2014 5:40 PM

McDonald is smart enough to realize that he can’t change the past and that now that he’s no longer in Miami there’s no point in jeopardizing his future by making a big deal of what happened.

  20. rubenxx7 says: Feb 15, 2014 5:47 PM

The report highlights the post-suspension texts instigated and crafted by incognito and release of those texts to the media as a desperate, transparent attempt by incognito to get sympathy and public support.

You are admitting that you got suckered by richie incognito.

the similarities between abused women and male athletes

in the case of abused women the excuse is men would be men……..in the case of male athletes the excuse is boys would be boys.

they both keep quiet about the harassment and hope/wish things will change

the backlash is mostly about them toughened up and taking the punishment because she is the wife (paid bride price/weaker/servant to the husband) – or – because males athletes should be used to violence/physical abuse

the abuser always finds a way to justify the actions [its just guys being guys] and the abused always has an excuse for the actions [it is true if the abused had raised an alarm the 1st or 2nd time, it won’t have escalated, not doing so is creating an excuse for the abuse]

richie incognito the dumbnut future in the nfl is over.

  34. stampnhawk says: Feb 15, 2014 7:56 PM

This one’s probably pretty easy to explain, but goes to show the dramatics of the media.

Considering how much RI and JM (and Pouncey) seemed to go to the strip bars and get lap dances etc, this McDonald guy probably didn’t get on that runaway train each time (probably couldn’t afford it). Thus, gets tagged by those guys (and others) with not going to the strip club=not liking women=liking guys.

That line of teasing goes on from there in the locker room, except he brushes it off as (however juvenile, but he’s likely seen that before in college etc) harmless locker room banter….as much of the JM stuff is, though he made the mistake of being to close to RI.

I have some experience with investigation similar to this although not as high-profile. Here is my take on the Ted Wells report:
(Disclaimer: I do not have a dog in this fight and could care less who’s right or wrong)

    1. 144 pages seems a bit light for this kind of an investigation. Particularly, given the length of time it took to complete.

    2. I cannot recall an investigation with as much “he said/she said” ‘s included. Typically, if these are in the report it is to “set the scene” so to speak and usually have some disclaimer such as “unconfirmed” or “unsubstantiated”, etc. I will admit I read through the report quickly and maybe they are there and I missed it.

    3. The report, on the whole, did seem to be devoid of facts, i.e all the texts, speaking or quoting directly from sources, etc. When hearsay statements were given there appeared to be no attempt to verify the information.

    4. In my opinion, the report does give the appearance of being a one-sided witch hunt. This is disappointing because the situation may have been hostile to Jonathan Martin but it will be discounted due to the lack of facts.

    Just my take…

  37. doctorrustbelt says: Feb 15, 2014 8:13 PM

Martin’s text show less than the incognito texts to Martin post-suspension… where incognito (and his agent/lawyer most probably) text false support to Martin… and then…. incognito sends separate messages to others castigating Martin… followed by leaks to the media.

Finally… Martin’s agent and parents saw incognito’s game and broke off contact.

Unfortunately for incognito….. Ted Wells uncovered separate emails from incognito to others that attack Martin and attempted to get teammates to destroy the O-Line fine log that further highlighted richie’s duplicity.

If you believe those texts… you are admitting you haven’t read the report…”

I’ve read everything I can get my hands on, what are you talking about?

The FIRST report about this whole issue was Incognito being this racist jerk who used derogatory and anti-gay slurs against Martin, and Martin was this poor guy who got bullied by JUST Incognito so bad that he had to leave the team and go get mental help.

THEN the text messages that Martin and Incognito were sending to each other BEFORE and DURING this incident were released. THIS is what I am talking about. Martin uses foul language, admits to getting wasted at parties, calls women all sorts of names, video tapes an apparent sexual act with a woman and shares it with Incognito, calls not only Incognito a “female dog” but essentially all of the crew they run with, calls Incognito gay, calls McDonald gay, etc. They both go at each other and it seems like a joking manner. One mouths off a bit, the other retaliates, and then they talk about something else. Working out, practicing, refunding money to a charity event for canceling an appearance, studying game film, getting better for next year, wishing each other well through injuries.

While again, I don’t condone the type of language and behavior both of these guys are using and how they choose to spend their free time with “hired ladies,” that doesn’t sound like one guy bullying another to me. So you are telling me that Incognito was faking these text messages that go all the way back to 2012, well before this became a story? Seriously, you need to look at these texts if you haven’t. You’d be doing yourself a disservice by ignoring it.

So yes, once my name is dragged through the mud while all of this is going on, I think I would lash out. A guy cost me my job, got me murdered in the press for being something I am not, and when I am a bit angry I may not be as PC as I should be. AFTER the fact of all of this happening.

I am no fan of Incognito’s. He surely doesn’t behave in a way I would like, but Martin isn’t exactly a sparkling angel in all of this.

Yes, because Martin is the model of responsibility. He pays the women he uses, up until the point he gets one pregnant…then he would look for help to get him out of the situation.

Think I am making that up? Nope. You can read all about it in his texts that he sent to Incognito. Maybe if you ask him he will even share a video of himself with a woman having some adult fun like he did with Incognito.

  47. vivagelato says: Feb 16, 2014 4:14 AM

There was a report on ESPN that the commissioner may bring try to bring NFL locker rooms into the 21st century and have them obey the national and state laws regarding the workplace. It will be interesting to see if the old boys club can adapt.

  48. Ed Bandell says: Feb 16, 2014 3:46 PM

Vivagelato, I really hope that is the case. People don’t seem to understand that this type of stuff happens all the time at almost every level of football.

If you read the Wells report you still are only going to get one-sided information. The real story is when you take into account some of that report, and all of the texts exchanged between Martin and Incognito.

Martin even states (and backs up my claim) that the type of language he was hearing, he has heard before in his college playing days. The Report also states that Martin ENGAGED in the same type of language on the field (which Martin agrees he said these things) towards other players on his team and to his opponents. But when Martin said those things, the Wells report determines that it wasn’t racially motivated (when you call other players the “n” word), or meant to be harmful, hurtful, or as harassment.

Huh? How come when one person says something and another person says the same thing, it is offensive for one to do it, but not the other. That is one HUGE discrepancy in the report.

A lot of the evidence the Wells report uses is more word of mouth than anything, it would not stand in a court of law. The Wells report picks and chooses the text messages it shows between Incognito and Martin, specifically choosing not to show you the VERY vulgar messages Martin sends.

I am in NO WAY condoning what went on not only with Incognito, but it wasn’t just him. It was Jerry, Pouncey, and Martin himself who all actively participated in this locker room mess.

Martin clearly had emotional issues way before he ever got to the Dolphins and never resolved them. He chose to walk away from it and is now trying to justify it by all of this. He even makes many, many references to “how it would look if I walk away.”

The man is smart. He shows several times in text messages and in comments made to others how he is manipulating his actions based on how he thinks other people will perceive it. You think what he is doing now is any different from that?

Lots of wrongs were done all the way around. A fair decision would be to tell all NFL teams that this type of stuff will no longer be tolerated anywhere by anyone. Martin and Incognito should go their separate ways and any team getting those players should realize there is A LOT of baggage to absorb with both of them.

I’ve seen some of your other troll-like posts on other threads around here, so no wonder you don’t get it.

The Wells report doesn’t include ALL of the texts between Incognito and Martin. There were tons of supportive texts shared between both players well before Martin had his breakdown and went to seek help.

I still haven’t seen anyone chastise Martin for his use of foul language, how he treats women, and for his abuse of McDonald. These are all things he actually did and there is no excuse for his behavior.

All of the offenders in this situation have shown their true colors and none of them should be excused. If there is any good in this story it is probably that a light has been shone on the typical NFL clubhouse behavior. If you think this thing is solely on the Dolphins…you are sadly mistaken. Martin himself admits this in the Wells report.

This is actually not correct. It was Martin who told Incognito that McDonald would be waiting for Incognito in his house with bath salts, a tranquilizer gun, and a box of sandpaper condoms.

Martin; a picture of a purely innocent angel, right?
