Report: Titans not expected to tag Verner

When we recently took a team-by-team look at potential franchise-tag recipients, cornerback Alterraun Verner emerged as the most likely candidate for the tag in Tennessee.

Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean believes the Titans aren’t likely to apply the tag to Verner in the two-week period from the opening of the window for tagging on February 17 to its closing on March 3.

Wyatt points to the projected $11.2 million franchise tender for the cornerback position.  With the team already paying cornerback Jason McCourty $8.6 million per year, it could be hard to justify devoting that much cash and cap space to one position.

The other potential candidate for the tag is safety Bernard Pollard, but they got him for only $2 million in 2013.  It would cost as much as $8 million to tag him.

Wyatt reports that the Titans would like to re-sign both guys.  But they won’t be able to keep one of them from hitting the open market if they won’t be using the tag.

The Titans have projected cap commitments in the range of $126 million, giving them limited cap space to work with.  Like most teams, they could easily generate more via the restructuring, extension, or termination of contracts.

For example, the Titans could clear up to $6 million in 2014 cap dollars by cutting running back Chris Johnson.

Would love to see him signed to the Skins. Young player would be an upgrade for almost all teams.

What they need to be worrying about is getting. a real nfl qb that can throw accurate and not be hurt all the time. And a rb who doesnt take plays offfffffff.

Trade Colin Kaepernick for Jake Locker.

Jake behind the 49er defense would go to the Super Bowl.

How can a team with so few good players and no qb accounting for a huge chunk have so little cap space? That 126 million figure has to be a mistake

Skins will come a callin’. You’d look good in burgundy and gold.

this is a thread about verner and the titans not tagging him. why are Vikings fans taking every thread and making it about them? no one cares if you think its a fit in Minnesota.

yeah, you wouldn’t actually want anything successful there in tennessee, would you?

Pittsburgh shouldn’t want not do the need Chris Johnson.

Verner would look great in a Saints uniform.

Cut (or trade?) CJ resign Verner & Pollard. But $6 m for CJ is about $5 m too much.

  20. The Steelers cast such an immense shadow over the league. There's no wonder why we are so widely envied. We are superior. We have six Lombardis. What do you have ☹? says: Feb 15, 2014 3:03 PM

The Steelers don’t have these problems. We have six Lombardis.

peytonsneck18, it’s called fat thumb syndrome, should read should not want nor do they need CJ

  25. Ed Bandell says: Feb 15, 2014 3:58 PM

Somebody should tell the Steelers guy that Noll didn’t win all those trophies, and that the city of Baltimore has 5 rings, 3 with the BALTIMORE Colts and 2 with the Ravens. One more and our city has just as many as Pittsburgh.

Somebody should also remind Pittsburgh that Cleveland actually has 8 championships….and somebody should remind Cleveland of that too, since their last one came in 1964. Ouch.

I guess we should rename it the Paul Brown trophy since he was in charge for 7 of those 8.

  26. greg2geez says: Feb 15, 2014 4:00 PM

I actually respect the Steelers and their accomplishments. It’s Steelers fans I can’t tell apart from road apples.

  27. jmblosser82 says: Feb 15, 2014 4:42 PM

Ed Bandell, the Baltimore Colt rings don’t count, they reside in Indy now. Steeler fans know they don’t have the most championships, but no one has more Lombardi’s, and this is still the Super Bowl era last time I checked.

He’ll get his paycheck and become mediocre again like most players in the league.

On a contract year, they play like a pro bowler, get paid, and then… meh.

Very few play like their paycheck. (Peyton, Tom, etc.)

Players think they should be paid for what they’ve done previously instead. CJ1k is a poster child of this mentality… Millions wasted.

U really need to look into jerry grays defenses while in tennessee and WITHOUT greg williams. It was awful. So u thinking u got a diamond in the rough ur wrong. Verner lite it up this yr due to greg willaims blitzing schemes that allowed such one on one on the outsides to be played. Season before last verners defense under gray gave up most pts in league. Verner in STL before minnhaha. Fisher drafted him n greg williams is now in STL. Verner getn paid cuz of williams.
