Bears sign journeyman defensive end Austen Lane

Austen Lane AP

Austen Lane is getting another chance to write another chapter.

The veteran defensive end is signing with the Bears today, according to a tweet from his agent.

Lane earned as much notice last year for writing about the emotions of getting cut as he did for his play on the field.

He had a two-week stint with the Lions after spending some time with the Chiefs. He spent his first three years in the league with the Jaguars, and his release there prompted him to dabble as a writer.

Now, he’ll get a chance to earn a check as a football player again.

Austen just carries his laptop and some notebooks in a sack on the end of a stick he holds over his shoulder.

I see the Bears finally found a replacement for Shea McClellin!

Speaking of Shea McClellin, I wonder how much better he and Nick Perry could have been if they had just been drafted by the right teams.

The Bears should have taken Nick Perry a guy better suited to play DE in a 4-3 that year instead of McClellin who would seem to be a better fit for OLB in the Packers 3-4 defense.

Maybe they should just swap players to test that theory. Thumbs up if you agree with that assessment.

Just the beginnings of Tucker bringing the legendary Jaguar D to Chicago! (Why didn’t he get fired)

If they play their cards wrong. Stephen Paea could be the only carryover from last year at DT, and while he’s not bad, you can’t have him be the centerpiece of the D-line like he was eventually forced to be last year.

I’d be surprised if both Melton and Collins are re-signed, but who stays and who goes is completely beyond my guesstimation.

    Just another body for camp.

As far as Paea, Peppers, or Melton goes, (or Wootton for that matter) I won’t be surprised a bit if all of them are gone this year. Time for a reboot.
