President Obama has weighed in on former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam’s announcement that he is gay, expressing admiration for Sam’s decision to come out in the months before the NFL draft.
In an interview with Charles Barkley on TNT, Obama noted that Sam wanted NFL teams to have a complete picture of who he is before they drafted him.
“I really like the fact that Michael did it before the draft,” Obama said. “Because his attitude was, ‘You know what? I know who I am. I know I can play great football and judge me on the merits.’ ”
First lady Michelle Obama previously called Sam “an inspiration to all of us.”
