Steelers hosting Louis Delmas

New England Patriots v Detroit Lions Getty Images

The Lions cut safety Louis Delmas last week.  The Steelers will be getting the first crack at signing him.

The 2009 second-round pick is visiting the Steelers on Monday, per a league source.  Because his contract was terminated, Delmas can sign with any team, at any time.

In Detroit, Delmas played safety in a defense that didn’t really pigeonhole one safety or the other as strong or free.  In Pittsburgh, free safety Ryan Clark will become a free agent, and strong safety Troy Polamalu has a base salary of $8.25 million and a cap number of $10.88 million.  Delmas could replace either of them, in theory.

Or his visit could be primarily about squeezing Clark and/or Polamalu into accepting whatever offer the Steelers currently have on the table.

He would be a good, relatively cheap signing for any team right now.

He’s a health gamble. And he’s not a top safety.

Clark is on the first boat out of town and will soon be working for the 4-letter sports network! #loudmouth

We haven’t had a FS in Detroit for about a decade. You have to have strong coverage and ball skills and instincts for that. And we clearly have chosen to not have interest in those traits, or the scouts don’t know how to find it. I think we need 2 good Safeties at this point to add for the long-term, so we need a pair of guys that are nothing like anything we have had before. Good luck to us in acquiring the needed talent for that position, I won’t hold my breath.

  5. enoughofthatalready says: Feb 17, 2014 2:48 PM

Delmas would be a good addition to the Steelers with Clark apparently not going to be re-signed, however, the Jests have more cap room to get him.

Good for my Steelers, Delmas was alwats solid and will be a fine replacemnt for Troy. He was getting long in the tooth, anyway.

Of course, we may need to scour the free agent market even more, as the news of the lost draft pick for Sideline Gate should be coming soon.

  13. bearshaterseverywhere says: Feb 17, 2014 2:56 PM

Steelers fans think they are the most important team in the NFL. Little do they know they only have 6 championships and the Packers and Bears have a combined 22 (13 for the Pack and 9 for the Bears) Nice try goofy Steelers fans, but you have a long way to go to be elite and historical like the NFC North teams (excluding the Lions and Vikings, which have 0)

  14. billclintonspetkraken says: Feb 17, 2014 2:56 PM

Dick LeBeau’s defense is very demanding with safeties; such as running up to the line of scrimmage on a zone blitz, or running all the way back on a cover bluff. I’m not a Steelers fan but I’m well aware of what that one guy, who happens to be a HoFer, does with his defense.

Can Delmas be a good fit? Perhaps, or perhaps not. All I know is that he better be in prime conditioning because that defense has the safeties running around. A lot.

  15. ez4u2sa says: Feb 17, 2014 2:57 PM

Does sound like a squeeze play. Polamalo isn’t worth that kind of a cap hit. His best days are well behind him.

  16. lionsfan41582 says: Feb 17, 2014 3:07 PM

anyone who thinks delmas is washed up or not a good safety. he is hard hitting and very good with coverage. you could see the difference with him in and with out. the lions def was so much worse when he was out.

  17. lionsfan41582 says: Feb 17, 2014 3:07 PM

  26. cluelessdufus says: Feb 17, 2014 3:30 PM

I guess people exclude the fact that before the Super Bowl there was barely competition for championships. Not defending my Vikings, but if you use that to justify every conversation it kinda makes you look bad. Any of that Vikings dynasty trolling gets old, really just makes me and other smart Vikings fans look stupid.

  27. jmblosser82 says: Feb 17, 2014 3:31 PM

bearshaterseverywhere, sure the bears and packers have more total championships, but this is the Super Bowl era. The Pack has 4 and the Bears have 1. The Steelers alone have 6, toss in the Ravens and that’s another 2. Heck I’ll toss you a bone, the AFCN has 3 titles in the last 10 seasons to the 1 for the NFCN. The Pack and Bears may have been powerhouses pre-Super Bowl era but the Steelers are the blue print during the SB era.

  33. officialgame says: Feb 17, 2014 3:58 PM

It is pretty funny the way Steeler and Raven fans taunt each other like they are ones making decisions and putting on the pads. Don’t forget the owners mantra guys; “there is an ass for every seat”.

  34. tonithgren says: Feb 17, 2014 4:05 PM

If the steelers pay him in grams of cocaine, then Delmas will sign immediately!

  35. jmblosser82 says: Feb 17, 2014 4:05 PM

I am not taking anything away from the Pack, Bears, Browns, and Giants, the franchises earned all 13, 9, 8, and 8 titles, but the Pack(9), Bears(8), and Browns(8) were the pre SB blue print and the Steelers(6) are the SB era blue print.

In the words of the great Peter Griffin, it grinds my gears when fans from the weakest division(8-7-1 won it)talks like they are the best.

Scoobs, I can admit weather by fluke or skill a win is a win.

  36. bonniebengal says: Feb 17, 2014 4:06 PM

If they sign Delmas, is Polamalu gone?

  37. troy43mvp says: Feb 17, 2014 4:11 PM

Actually Delmas does not practice much but he does play in games. He may have played in all 16 for Detroit last year if not 15 for sure. If the price is right it would be worth the roster spot. Remember Pitt never pays much for any free agent. The last really worth while free agent pick up was Bettis. Cotchery looks to be promising too.

  38. cup1981 says: Feb 17, 2014 4:13 PM

A stopgap to fill the FS spot until they draft a replacement or develop Shamarko Thomas or Robert Golden into starters? Yes. A replacement or even stopgap for Troy? No way!

Shamarko is being groomed to take one of the two slots — likely SS — and he showed some promise in spot duty last year. Robert Golden has really come around as of late too.

No one can ever replace Troy; he is a one-of-a-kind safety. You can only hope someone can come in and fit the system that is in place.

  39. mayfieldroadboy says: Feb 17, 2014 4:21 PM

Football championships are championships, regardless of the name attached to it. There was a championship football team before the “superbowl” became the nomenclature. And you can mention the Bears, the Packers, the Steelers as being football champions. But have you all forgotten the Browns? How many championships did they win?

  51. thefiesty1 says: Feb 17, 2014 7:23 PM

Why would they want him? He’s played for Detroit. Almost as bad as taking someone from Cleveland.

  52. crownofthehelmet says: Feb 17, 2014 7:49 PM

All those Flacco and Dalton lobs for picks have to be pretty enticing for Delmas.

  53. Joemontanaflacco says: Feb 17, 2014 8:15 PM

Like I always say, if he’s good enough to be cut from a team that’s never gone to the SB, he’s good enough to star in a team whose SB days are dead and gone.

  54. jmblosser82 says: Feb 17, 2014 8:50 PM

JMF, Steelers have a better upside in the SB hunt then the Ravens. They never looked good other then a quarter here and there. Steelers started off horrid but finished strong.

  55. steelcurtainn says: Feb 17, 2014 9:18 PM

Delmas would be a good pick up at the right price. Its great seeing jealous raven trolls. The reality is the ravens were SUPPOSED to finish ahead of the steelers while they were reloading this year. They failed miserably lol. Now their best days are behind them. The steelers will continue to climb the ladder to claim their 7th Lombardi.

  56. crownofthehelmet says: Feb 17, 2014 9:43 PM

Steelers don’t need a safety. Their linebackers can easily cover all the out of shape, slow, stone-handed recvr’s in the afcn. Not to mention the noodle-armed QBs.

Is anyone else aware that Troy was one of only 12 players in the league to play every one of his teams snaps? That, while playing linebacker a good chunk of the time. While he has not always been healthy, he has certainly been healthy lately. Considering what his job duties were this last season, he played very well and deserved his trip to the Pro Bowl.

Delmas also played in every game although he was listed as being on the injury report every week. Some off time will really help him, but he was more durable last year than people might realize. I still doubt he signs with the Steelers, he will probably get a better paying offer somewhere else.

  63. ivanpavlov0000 says: Feb 18, 2014 4:00 AM

Delmas played in 16 games last season, but his contracted was constructed with a pay-for-play bonus. He had to make sure he could get on the field.

It’s coming out that he had to have his knee drained every week and played in pain all season. Whether he can even be on the field for all 16 games + the playoffs this year is something that should concern Steeler fans.

The Lions defense was always better with him on the field. His intensity is infectious. But … he was the leader of a secondary that QBs used to pick apart. He needs a good supporting cast around him.

And I prefer Mike Tomlin over anyone named Harbaugh.

rushbacker, I would gladly give up a combined 413 yards and 1 garbage time TD for a 3-1 against Ohio every year. Steelers also out scored Ohio 87-58.

Bengals won 20-10 and lost 30-20
    Browns lost 27-11 and 20-7

Yards mean squat if points are not scored and your team doesn’t win.
Gordon 237 yards 1 garbage time TD, lost 27-11, 82 yards 0 TD in 20-7 loss.
    Green 93 yards 0 TD in 30-20 loss, 41 yards 0 TD 20-10 win.

So tell me who has the last laugh.

  69. jmblosser82 says: Feb 18, 2014 10:53 AM

Before someone says the Bengals got the last laugh cause they made the playoffs, just remember they got embarrassed at home for a third straight 1 and done. Also, since they made the playoffs they draft at 24, they need secondary help, a WR to go with Green, and a QB who doesn’t buckle on prime time tv.
